Big 10 Week One

Submitted by jamiemac on

Are you ready for a world where a Sun Belt team is favored against a Big 10 club?

That's the reality of the day. Complete set of spreads for the opening weekend have been released. Here are the Big 10 games, some of which is old news as the 'bigger' games had lines realized weeks ago.

Minny +4 at MTSU....PLAY4BREW is an underdog against a Sun Belt team. Nice going.

OSU -29 vs Marshall

MSU -21 vs WMU

Wisco -19.5 at UNLV (lol, wisco at wisco. if it was only that easy)

NW -2.5 at Vandy....is this a trap? I thought NW might be favored by 6 or 7.

UM -3 vs UConn.....somebody in Vegas told me a few weeks ago, this had gone up to 4.5. Good to see when my Book released it was still -3. The Over/Under on the game is 53.5

PU +10 at ND.....I like this one a lot for some reason

Illini +13.5 vs Missou....up from 10 earlier in the summer. Nobody is betting the Illini

As for other lines across the nation:

Pitt +3 at Utah
Washington +3 at BYU
Oregon St +13 vs TCU (Dallas)
UNC +1.5 vs LSU (Atlanta)
Cincy -1.5 at Fresno
Maryland +6.5 at Navy
Boise -2.5 vs Va Tech (Washington)

Place your bets.

For fun, here are my picks.

Minny +4 at MTSU.... - I would take Minny

OSU -29 vs Marshall - Hate to say it, but would prob go with OSU

MSU -21 vs WMU - Go with WMU - not just b/c I don't like Li'l bro, but because they are not winning by 21.

Wisco -19.5 at Wisco - Hmmmmm.  This is a tough one.  Wisco's offense is pretty solid, but Wisco's D may be able to stop them.

NW -2.5 at Vandy....NW - this is prob the pick I am most confident in.

UM -3 vs UConn - Go with the good guys on this.  Partially b/c I have never (and will never) place a bet against M, but also because I think that this team is going to surprise a lot of people.

PU +10 at ND..... ND.  Will be able to score in bunches.

Illini +13.5 vs Missou....I would take Missou so long as the spread stays under 20.  Illini = not so good

Love LSU and Oregon State.

Rodgers brothers will keep it close for the Beavers and LSU's D will be too much for Yates and UNC.

My one caveat is that OSU always gets off to slow starts, otherwise I think they're solid.

I'd go with Marshall +29 I think.  Opening day?  The kind of game that OSU typically wins ugly.

NW vs Vandy?  Give 2 points.

I like Minny over MTSU too.

One slight difference this year is that the OSU-Marshall game is on Thursday night instead of a noon Saturday start. There will be plenty of time for the Buckeye faithful to get liquored up and the players to wake up.

Also, don't forget that St. Tress will be sure to pull out all the stops to ensure that his team covers the spread ala last season's game against New Mexico St.

I will eat your shirt the day I see a "Missou" shirt in Missouri.  It is Mizzou.

That being said:

1) Is Western that bad this year?  21 point dogs to State?  That seems like a lot.

2) I'd take ND -10 over Purdon't - Weis is gone, they still have Floyd.  They are at home.  Fans/players pumped up for BK era.

3) I like our odds to cover that spread.  The only reason I can ever see us losing to UConn is the fact they have more upperclassmen than we do.  (our glaring hole right now - defensive secondary - is also a glaring hole for UConn)

I'll take UNLV and the points, thank you very much. Interesting that Wisco is playing at UNLV again after playing there in 2007 without a game being played in Madison.

I'm a little surprised that Boise State is the favorite against Va Tech in D.C., I suspect that line will move to a pick 'em by kickoff.

I'd think about jumping on that over/under of  53.5. Gotta go over.  I was brainstorming it earlier and guessed it would be like 57 or so.

Vandy is pretty terrible, but, the game being on the road for Northwestern, anything can happen. Hopefully Minnesota doesn't give the conference a horrible loss to start the season.

As far as some of the non-Big Ten ones...definitely LSU and Virginia Tech IME.

Carolina basically returns their entire D which was great last year against an LSU team that had trouble scoring points last fall. I didn't realize they were opening against LSU this year. Carolina also has a ton of alums in the At
lanta area. This should be a good game for a Carolina fan. I would definitely take the points on this one....
