"Temptation" teaser - replacement chant

Submitted by jmblue on

For a long time, fans didn't chant anything during or after the "Temptation" teaser after a defensive stop.  In recent years, students have started chanting "You suck!"  Quite a few people don't like this, for a variety of reasons.  If you're in that camp (I am as well), realistically, you aren't going to get the students to go back to not saying anything - they're used to chanting during/after it now.  But maybe they could chant something else (and ideally, something that the alumni could also pick up, so you could have the whole stadium chanting instead of just one corner of it).  Any ideas?

"Let's Go Blue!" is fairly obvious, but maybe we could come up with something different.

I'm among the many that Thom Brennaman cited as cynical and sarcastic when he went on his Tim Tebow soapbox rant during the BCS Championship game 2 years ago.

I think its funny and if these kids can't take it, tough nuggets. They get ripped and yelled at everyday in practice anyway.

I'm in the "you suck" camp.

Here's the thing: the alumni aren't going to chant "You suck."  You can call them out of touch of whatever, but that's the reality.  So do you want a cheer that only one corner of the stadium chants (and which is virtually inaudible from the south half of the stadium) or one that the entire stadium might chant?

At hockey games, the alumni rarely participate in the chanting, but it doesn't matter because in such a small, indoor building, the student chants are sufficient to make a lot of noise.  At Michigan Stadium, the students aren't enough.  "You suck" coming from one corner of the stadium, while the other three corners are silent, hardly reaches the field.  The players can barely hear you.  We need a cheer that the alums will also chant for it to be effective.  As it is, it isn't happening.

Such a ridiculously stupid thing to say when we're losing.

I can understand those who partake at other points in the game, such with ties and leads, but when the Maize and Blue are trailing, drop it.

The idea of taunting or demeaning the opposing team isn't what I'm opposed to, I just think "You Suck" is really uninspired.  But I guess hoping for Yost-esque cleverness with that many people, half of whom are drunk or wandered in during the 2nd quarter, is a bit much to ask.

...coupled with the reality that the chant is never going to be embraced by the alums, makes it a loser.  Fan intimidation isn't so much about what is said as it is about total participation.  The more fans participate in a cheer, the greater impact it has.

Is "you suck" really that awful. I can think of a handful of other things much worse. Pretty soon there will be rules posted about what you are allowed to say. Just as bad as the water bottle rule. Let the students have their fun.

"Curb Stomped"

"Just Punt"

"Fourth Down"

"Good Luck"

I'm partial to the first one, but I guess that it still comes of as classless.

You tried

You failed

You punt

We score

Go Blue

Go Blue

*Repeat

Just imagine the same rhythm as the you suck chant, and one giant go blue at the end.

Unfortunately in the last few years, all too often I've had to replace the "YOU SUCK" with a quiet, muffled, "no, WE suck" under my breath.

In the future, Lord willing, if we find ourselves in a postion to rightfully scream "YOU SUCK", I will gleefully participate. Class or no class, I don't care. I feel like I've earned it, dammit.

However, I do really like the "Put away your damn keys!!" idea.

My college roommate used to sing along to Temptation using the words "we get the ball."  I can't really relate it well through a message board, but it was sorta funny.

ya its not really creative, but it sounds cool imo and i like it...

also i would be more for taking suggestions from people outside the student section is it wasnt for the fact that at least our section is loud and stands up all game every game...

finally, i would argue that it is the furthest we push the line and that it isnt even swearing ... most student sections take it to a different level (see wisconsin's student section, the best in the big ten btw, where i wouldnt take a young child and also who could be heard chanting things such as "lets get wasted" over the tv for  the last 5 minutes of the game)

Why not use the opportunity to address the pressing issues of the day:

(1)  "We're Parched!"  (water ban)

(2)  "Play Louder"  (MMB/piped-in music kerfuffle)

(3)  "Di-Lithium" (QB controversy)

(4)  "Freep Sucks" (no explanation necessary)

The main problem with the You Suck chant is how fucking stupid we sound doing it at certain points in time.

It was late 4th quarter last year when we were down to Penn State 35-10 and we got a defensive stop. Then came temptation and the students around me chanting "YOU SUCK."

My thoughts: "We're getting blown the fuck out in Ann Arbor and you're still saying You Suck."

I get that its a cheer, but it reminds of when the Lions are losing by 45 and get a first down and someone celebrates elaborately. If we're getting blown out it sounds fucking stupid.
