Meh news for student hockey season ticket holders!
Just got this email:
Dear Student Season Ticket Holder:
We want to inform you of a change in student seating for The Big Chill at the Big House on Dec. 11, 2010. We originally indicated that student seating would be general admission within the student area. Due to our experience with general admission seating at graduation in May, we have decided to use reserved seating for this event. This will ensure your seats for this once in a lifetime special event.
• Your football ticket for The Big Chill at the Big House will be a reserved seat in the same location as your football season ticket and will be included on your football season ticket sheet.
• Your hockey ticket for The Big Chill at the Big House will be a reserved seat in section 33 adjacent to the student section. Student hockey groups will be assigned together. Information on hockey group seating and ticket pick-up for this ticket will be emailed in September.
• If you purchased additional tickets beyond those included with your season tickets, they will be reserved seats assigned in the endzone sections adjacent to the student section. Additional tickets will be available at the Ticket Office in November and we will email you when they are ready for pickup. If you have any questions or wish to cancel your order for additional tickets, please contact us at [email protected] or 866.296.6849. We look forward to seeing you in Michigan Stadium on Sept. 4 for the start of the football season. Thank you for your understanding.

I was about the post the same thing...
Looks like the AD wimped out. The Wisconsin student section was GA for the culver classic and it was insane.
Now decision time, do I sit in my football seat or with the hockey student section. I am planning on giving my two extra tickets to my cousin and her now fiance as a wedding present. Looks like I will have to sneak them into my section now.
We have easily one of the best home crowds in NCAA hockey because of the student section, first they gave us no priority over the football season ticket holders and now we're almost worse off than them, and too far from the ice to make as big an impact as usual. I wrote one angry letter in March, they told me they were "exploring options," and this is what we get? Honestly we should be with the rest of the non-student hockey season ticket holders at the 50 yd line or move MSU's allotment into the damn endzone and give us decent seats.
Let me see what I can do. I was in Rackham student government for a year and dealt with Marty Bodnar. This move is complete bullshit. If they are going to change to reserve seating, I agree with you, hockey student ticket holders should hold priority over other students. Now we have worse seats. Hell, I was fine with GA. All that meant was that I camp out in front of the gates so I could get row 20 seats in section 29. Don't hold your breath. I am used to the AD treating the students as second class citizens compared to the donors (not that I am blame them in this economy...).

The students that support the hockey team the whole season, get thrown as far away as possible and the worst angle possible. I bet we are extremely low and will not be able to see anything. I cannot believe how we get screwed. Also, as if that screw job was not enough, I got 2 tickets intentionally, one with football season tickets, and one with hockey season tickets to bring a friend from high school, and now they are 7 sections apart.....thanks for that brilliant example of intelligence. I was planning on getting there early in the general admission section and picking out whatever seat gives the best view, looks like that plan will get screwed. wtf
I sent the ticket office and Bodnar personally an e-mail expressing my displeasure. Hopefully more will do the same and get this rectified somehow.

The way the ticket office has handled student tickets for both football and hockey, especially for this event has been awful. Screw you, Marty.

I think it would be better as "student hockey season ticket holders"? which isnt that far away so maybe its just me.
But yeah I hold hockey and football season tickets. so I'm a bit ticked.

Yeah, it just seems obvious to me to reward the most excited fans with the best seats. PSU has GA for their football games and they have Paterno-ville because of the fans. If you want a front row seat, you can get it - you just have to camp out a week before hand for the best games. I can't believe that Hockey ticket holders don't even get preference over everyone else.

I don't care what they say, either, I am giving my extra ticket to my dad, and he is going to sit with me in the better of the two locations if all of this stands. I just can't believe they have the nerve to force us to buy two tickets and then turn around and seperate them, with the ticket source that should be more important ending up the crappier seat.
In case no one knew, alienating the portion of your fanbase known for its loudness is not a good plan.
dont have time to pull off both vasketball and hockey but i am a big enough fan to drive to ft wayne a couple times last yr ...

i really doubt any view will be good from any student seats .. but it will still be sick and i couldnt be more pumped up just to be there
Look, I am not totally stupid...I know we were not going to get good seats in general. The big wtf for me is the reserved seats. I am a senior now, so I have a row 9 ticket for football and that is perfectly fine for football because there are no low obstructions blocking play. However, with boards and glass, you have to be higher. With GA, I was going to camp out early, sit about 20-30 rows up and able to watch the whole game. That is what pisses me off.
Secondly, probably 99% of hockey ticket holders are football ticket holders. With each season ticket, you received a free Big Chill ticket. Well, I am in section 26 for football, now 33 for hockey. WTF?!?! So now I have to get someone to willingly trade and sit in 33? which could be the worst seats in the place for this event. How did they figure all these fans with two tickets in OPPOSITE GOD DAMN SIDES of the section were going to work this out? Was the athletic department drinking when they were going through these senarios?
What issues did they have with general admission at Graduation?
What possibly issues could you have?! People saving seats with a blanket like at demolition derbys? I fail to see how any issues could have arised.
of the student ticket holders for hockey sitting together isn't even a good part of this. For one, it doesn't help other students learn the cheers. At least when it was all GA, even though there probably should have been priority seating, there would have been at least some mixture of hockey students and other students and hopefully more people could pick up on the chants. For a second, it's not even really the whole student section. The student ticket holders are going to be as far away as students get from the band (assuming they are where they are normally), which kinda ruins any interaciton there as well. For a third, while funny, on the spot chants are fantastic, they kind of lose their point if literally NOBODY is close enough to hear them. Basically, what I'm getting from the AD in this, is that they don't want an atmosphere.
I share having no idea what the problem with GA is. I was at graduation, sitting in GA and maybe I'm just blind and stupid, but I saw no real conflicts.
I don't think the AD can really make a priority seating for the hockey students and everybody else they may have gotten tickets for, but maybe a section surrounding the band on all sides, roped off for the students with hockey tickets and they can all bring in one person with them and then the rest of the normal student section is just GA. Then, there is priority seating, it's not half the student section for all the hockey students and all of their guests, gives the AD a specific number of seats to rope off and if there is a third wheel, there's some room along the sides of the section for the other people the hockey students want near them and even if nobody else teaches the rest of the students the cheers, there is a pretty sizeable base tht at knows everything pretty close to the ice. There are probably a hundred hoels in that, but there's definitely gotta be something the AD can do that doesn't involve trying to turn the Big House into the Library...
Rich alumni don't like being stuck in the nosebleeds for events after throwing $10k-100k a year at the school. I'm quite sure that happened quite a bit at graduation - the wealthier alumni tend to show up later, and they also complain the loudest. The University will probably never use G.A. again for big events, after the massive issues with graduation traffic etc forcing wealthy alumni to sit up top. The 'upper bowl' vs 'lower bowl' random allotment thing pissed a lot of people off, as well. That will DEFINITELY not be used ever again.
a TON of sense. For graduation. But we also had Obama at graduation. Do that many wealthy alumni really show up for every graduation? Maybe some, when their one or two children (grandchildren?) graduate, but there can't be that many on a year-in year out basis, when we don't have the President speaking.
Also, the wealthy alumni HAVE their posh seats for this game. They don't need to sit in the studnet section and if they choose to, they can deal with GA. I don't understand why our AD can't separate the situations. I'm not advocating GA for the whole stadium, or even for football games, but for this, I think it's mostly appropriate. If the rich alumni have a problem with it, the AD can refer them to me and I'll take care of them.
Seniors will bitch because freshmen that live in South Quad will show up earlier to the game and take the first several rows in the case of general admission.
Which, as a senior (well I was last year), is bullshit. If some freshmen beats me to the stadium then he or she deserves the seat.

You're not the problem. The fraternity and sorority students that can't drag themselves to the game until 20 minutes in and expect to still get their seats and complain (loudly) to their (large donor base) fraternity/sorority brethren if they don't are the problem.

Some asshole frat kids tried to move me in the THIRD quarter last year. I even got vodka thrown on me and into my eye. Luckily nobody around us was supporting him and he eventually left. I really wanted to turn around and put him on his ass, but I was trying to, you know, watch the freaking game.
As a senior graduate student, if some other student shows up earlier than I will, then they deserve a better seat. Lets reward dedication. This action penalizes dedication to the hockey team by placing the hockey student section in the worst possible section. Marty does not allocate the seating for hockey, only for football and basketball. If he did, I am willing to bet he would have screwed up that too.
Well whoever does it for hockey screwed up my seats for last season. My entire group was in their third straight year buying and we got stuck in Section 8. We were told that they had forgot to hold seats off in Section 15 for player parents and when realized that had to, they just moved those in that area over to 8, not taking into account priority (number of years buying). Hopefully it doesn't happen again this year.
Double posters will bitch about single posters taking all the good posts when they could have posted them instead. TWICE.
the exact reason why we now have club seats and suites?
A) a suite is probably heated, right? alumni are gonna be too cold by the 3rd period anyway
B) they complain if you stand up or make any noise, so now we put them high and mighty above the rest of us where they can see and not bitch about those darn kids standing and cheering
I think the Ath. Dept. just thinks it will end up like a football game, loud and exciting, except they forgot it's a hockey game which is farther away, harder to see, and unless we hype it up enough a lot of students won't go (anymore) and it will be GA by default as we all move down into the empty rows.
P.S. is a well-worded email something like "Ahhh you mother f'ers"?
