TVH Weekly: Posada Decision Soon, Hobbi Visit

Submitted by TomVH on

The weekly update is a little slim today, with two commits dropping last week, and the holiday weekend. Here's the latest on this week's happenings.

Cyrus Hobbi

6'4, 285 lbs.

Offensive Guard

Scottsdale, AZ

Cyrus is a big offensive line prospect with major offers to his name. Hobbi currently holds around 17 offers including Michigan, Alabama, ASU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and USC. As we've found out with other prospects in Arizona, it's sometimes hard to get them out for a visit, especially when it's an unofficial on their own dime. Well, the Hobbi family just happens to be taking a cross country trip to New York, and they will be stopping by Ann Arbor on the way:

We're coming up next week, on Tuesday (July 13th). We're just coming for the day on our way to New York. I don't know a lot about Michigan, so this visit will help me decide if I'm really interested, or not.

That seems fair. Cyrus told me he played against Taylor Lewan and Craig Roh as a sophomore, but doesn't know them well enough to call them up and talk about Michigan. Craig actually tried his patented spin move on Hobbi and was shut down. He's also planning on stopping by Notre Dame. Those plans have changed:

I'm not going to Notre Dame anymore, they haven't returned any of my calls. I guess they filled up, but they won't call me back, either. I'll just enjoy myself at Michigan instead.

Take that! This visit is big for Michigan, who otherwise probably wouldn't have been able to get him on campus before the season. This will give him and his family a chance to see everything without a group of other recruits there, without any distractions.

Tony Posada

6'6", 315 lbs.

Offensive Line

Tampa, Florida

Tony Posada recently named Michigan his leader after his visit up to Ann Arbor. That still holds true, and it may just be a matter of time before he ends his recruitment:

We're working out a date with my family and coaches to make a decision. I'd like to do it as soon as possible, it could be next week, it could be longer; we're not sure yet. Michigan is still my leader, though.

So... ya know, there's that. It seems like Michigan should be getting the call soon. I hate making predictions off of information that seems obvious, but an upcoming decision with a declared leader is almost always a decision that's already been made privately.

Avery Walls

5'11", 184 lbs.

Safety

McDonough, Georgia

I spoke with Walls recently about his interest in Michigan. He played it close to the vest, but let out a little insight on how this will play out.

Michigan is a team that I am considering very highly. I will be paying close attention to the beginning of their season.

As we've seen with a number of other recruits. If Michigan wins early, they'll get real shot him. If they get off to a slow start, then it will be an uphill battle. Those first six or seven games are going to be CRUCIAL to Michigan's recruiting efforts.

Extra:

  • PA DB Kyshoen Jarrett will have his narrowed down list today, once he clears it with his coach. He told me that Michigan was on it, and he's very interested.
  • Instate OL Jake Fisher says he wants to make his decision in the next few weeks. It's between Michigan and MSU at this point. I think Michigan has the slight edge. He does plan on going back up to MSU soon. and things can change quickly, but we look to be in the driver seat.
  • PA safety Dondi Kirby tore his ACL, and will be out for the season. It's an unfortunate time to have that happen, as a football recruit. Not that there's a good time for it to happen, but you know what I mean.

Sorry Tom, I don't think that is Cyrus Hobbi, his real name is Landry Clark a kicker and back up WR/DB for East Dillon H.S. in Texas.   Despite being a genius Landry is retaking his senior season.  He's currently a 3 star, but it is mainly due to the fact he transferred schools and his team's struggles have not got him a lot of exposure.  When he gets done with the combine circuit he could be a 4 star when Rivals revises their rankings.

Good news about OL, between Fisher, Hobbi and Posada.  It sounds like Posada and possibly Fisher will be in the fold soon, then recruits we'll be in good shape because we'll have essentially one spot left for any non-Zettel OL, and it would almost have to be a tackle.  Then we can just focus on the defensive front 7 for the rest of the cycle.

There are a few schools looking for him exclusively at OG, but Michigan wants him for either position.  I think he has more potential at offensive guard than defensive end, but I think he's a 4-star talent either way.  The mods at Rivals keep saying that Michigan's scholarships might fill up by the time Zettel decides, but I disagree - Michigan will make room for Zettel no matter when he wants to commit.

The date of the update should be 7/6, not 6/6.  Of course some might think that is a major correction that needs to be made because it would mean an extra month before kick off.  Anyways, thanks as always for the update.

for being 8-16 the last two years and with a very tough schedule in 2010.

Man, if Michigan finds an improbable way to start out 2-0 this year by beating the best UConn team ever seen and a completely different, Kelly-ized Notre Dame team on the road in ND Stadium, then damn, the Wolverines are going to do some major damage on the recruiting trail this fall.

If Michigan starts out 0-2, then head for the hills.....until the MSU game that is.

I don't think a 2-0 start will cause UM to do major damage on the recruiting tail.  It might have kids paying closer attention.  I think a lot of the kids that are on the fence are more interested to see how UM does for the season or a vast majority of it.  A 2-0 start with a 5-7 finish probably won't cause a lot of major damage on the recruiting trail.

MSU Recruiting Coach: Tell me about yourself. Something I don't know. Like... what were you scared of as a child?

Fisher: Big Bird always freaked me out.

MSU Recruiting Coach: Big Bird? Yeah, he's scary. So... besides us, where else are you thinking of playing?

Fisher: I'm really thinking about going to U of M, actually.

MSU Recruiting Coach: Oh! U of M? Yeahhh... that's a good school. Fine program. You might wanna reco... nah. Never mind. Not my place.

Fisher: What?

MSU R C: Well... I mean, this is just a rumor now, but the grapevine among coaching circles is that Big Bird is first in line to replace Coach Rodriguez if he doesn't go undefeated this year. I mean, like, he's already signed the contract. They just can't make it official. Also, I heard their fans have something against guys whose last names start with the letter "F". I guess they hate them, for some reason.

Big Bird is obviously not going to be the next football coach.  That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard.  He is obviously slated to take the reigns from Belein.  The dude is like ten feet tall!  how could anyone think he would be a football guy over basketball?  i think you need to check you'r sources.

I had a chance to see him play in person as a junior. The kid is a freak. He is insanely quick. Big legs and shoulders. I think he is a better fit at strongside DE. Kid could add 40 pounds of muscle mass if he wanted to but I think he willlook similar to BG at 270 pounds. Zettel is a bit taller then BG however so the potential is almost unlimited.

Hobbi should have tried to visit 2 months ago when he had an actionable offer.  When an assistant coach tells your coach ND is no longer recruiting you, it means they're no longer interested.

Seems odd to stop recruiting a top tier recruit(ESPN has him as the #1 guard prospect), because he couldn't get there.  I think Notre Dame discriminates against poor people.    I try to look at these recruiting rumors, by applying a logic meter.  This don't pass.   Someones lying.

When Hanratty and Hegarty committed at the end of april it only left one more OL slot and that is for a ROT.  Hobbi is a guard, I actually like Walsh better at guard even though he doesn't have an offer, tbh

Hobbi's a good kid, great prospect, thought ND would be a strong player in his recruitment but ND filled up, so thats all there was to it.  I am sure he will land somewhere he is comfortable, plenty of nice offers to pick from.

gimme a freakin' break "though I played with roh & lewan, I don't know them well enough to ask about Michigan"  .....oh c'mon....HS football players are always tight with each other. Perhaps he should just say the truth "I'm really not very interested in Michigan"

he doesn't have to cold-call Roh & Lewan, relative strangers, because he's going to come up here and talk to the coaches.  And if Roh & Lewan are around, they'll have a chance to welcome a home-stater and introduce themselves.  And trash talk about who bested whom back in those old high school days.  And tell him they'd be happy to have him on their side now that he's a[n even] big[ger] kid.

I do like the idea of an unsinkable sea serpent in the Great Lake State.

I don't know what the cable packages are like up there, but if anyone has a package that contains the four Foxsports regional channels, look for the Plant/Manatee Florida HS Championship game on Fox Atlantic.  They have been running it a lot.  Posada had a monster game for Plant.

He played so well that announcers who usually don't talk about anyone on the OL noticed and even featured him on replays.

Out of curiosity, can anyone give hypothetical ratings about these guys? I am glad that they seem to be interested, but I'm curious to know how good they actually are, and how they stack up compared to others.
