Weird Michigan Themed Stuff

Submitted by BlockM on

Last week I had to go back to my orthodontist (strange experience as a 21 year old) to get fitted for a couple new retainers and was asked what color I wanted. I needed two, so I asked if I could get them in blue and yellow (none of the samples they had were "maize," so I went with the next best thing). I picked them up this morning and as far as retainers go, they look great.

I figure as Michigan fans we've all got random stuff we decided to get in Maize and Blue, so what's your coolest/weirdest?

Has a lamp, where the base is a small Michigan themed golf bag (including zipper pouches, strap and everything), it comes up to a lightbulb at the end of what would be a golf club, and the shade is a Michigan themed umberella.  If not for the obviously perfect theme, it would be the ugliest lamp on the planet.

Edit: For perspective, the whole thing is about 3-4 feet tall, bag and shade included.

it's pretty much a given that they have to be maize and blue... Ms. 60 once sarcastically offered to buy me a ridiculously priced pair of Nike Shox but only if I got them in red and silver, because she knows I'd walk barefoot on hot coals before putting those things on my feet.

Also-- toothbrush.  Gotta be maize n blue.

I've pretty much given up on any other colors.  Yellow and blue used to be my favorite colors before I picked Michigan (I wasn't a fan of college sports before I came to college), so there wasn't much to change.

I live in East Lansing now, so I feel the need to rep and rep hard. I drive a blue jeep (with M license plate, cover and university sticker)

a 6'x4' M flag over the desk

And I recently convinced my company (who's logo is blue) to paint our latest product Yellow (we've only made 2 of these things... it's a really niche industry), so it will ship to the national lab Yellow and Blue

All the state supporters at work weren't too happy... but hopefully we keep with that paint scheme

was at Fermilab.  I had a physics literature course during my last year as an undergrad.  Our prof., Dr. Campbell worked at Fermilab on the weekends.  He took the class for a field trip one weekend.  When we were exploring his project, he stated it was very normal for grad students to help out.  He then walked over to a panel and pulled out a drawer with what seemed like hundreds of circuit boards.  He smiled, and said his grad students helped with them.  Upon closer inspection, the boards themselves were blue with the chips and circuits having maize undertones.

At the end of the school year last year, a group of my students(7th grade math), took a yardstick and painted it blue with yellow "M"s all over it--though I live in Illinois--and they all signed it too.  Best gift I ever received from kids.

I think you can put the maize wings on anything and have it look cool.  Tractor, mailbox, grill, etc.  What I'd like to find are golfballs that are white with the maize wings stamped on them.  Does such a thing exist already?

When I got married I had all yellow flowers and my bridesmaides wore blue dresses.  I have to say the dark blue paired with the yellow flowers looked pretty sharp.  I was quite proud of myself for subtly inserting some Michigan into the wedding experience.

My wife was sweet enough to suprise me with 2 garters when i went under her dress for the toss.  One was just white which is the one I obviously threw to the crowd.  The other one was a Michigan Garter and it remains at the house now.  That was a nice suprise.  She also suprised me with a Michigan Groom Cake and Tickets to Michigan vs Purdue.  It was pretty awesome.

Lawn gnomes.
A belly button ring. (Best gift ever)
Maize and blue Polo Ralph Lauren bag (also a gift)
And well over $300 worth of the Victoria's Secret M stuff, makes all my high school friends jealous they didn't go to a big school.

No, no. She's quite fond of showing me sweatpants, over sized sleeping t-shirts and the like. But try to get her to come out of  the bathroom in one lace up corset-type-thing, and NOOOOO, it's all, "But I'm bulging out the top AND the bottom! I look like an empty spool of thread!"

Women. You don't see me complaining when I've got muffin top going on, do you?

The best is getting issued hard hats for working in ship yards and I break out the spray paint.

I've also been issued tactical helmets(black) and have to toe the line on them with my superiors but they always somehow get black marker on the flat black paint that resemble a "winged helmet" shall we say.

Two of the three kayaks I have owned were all yellow, so I added a little color to them.  My friend did the top one and I did the bottom one (the middle photo is what the bottom kayak looked like before I painted it).  Sadly I do not own either one anymore, but some day there will be another.

We used Rustoleum Painter's Touch spray paint.  Use contact paper that you can pick up at your local Wal-Mart or wherever for the design.  Contact paper sticks to the kayak and it's easy to pull off without leaving any stickiness behind.  You want to cover up all the areas you don't want to paint, i.e. the block M's were all cut out of contact paper and stuck on the kayak, then I painted, and when it dried I peeled them off and the M's are all the original kayak color left behind.

I also recommend doing it outdoors so everything in your garage doesn't end up with a nice blue haze.

I've never had any problem with paint falling off or dissolving in the water.  The only paint I ever lost were scratches on the bottom from dragging it in and out of the water (no big deal since you never see that part of the kayak in the water anyway) and a few chips on the side from my paddle scraping it.

This past year I had to make 2 pinewood derby cars for my boys. Both were blue with the winged helmet design. Even srpung for yellow wheels.

Me and my dad have done the exact same thing. Ours was not as in depth as your however. My pinewood derby car had three yellow stripes that were connected at the front of the car and horrifyingly off looking wings on the side. We won though, and me, my mom, and my dad could all be heard yelling "GO BLUE" as we crosed the finish line.
