New Scoreboards
I was aware that we were looking at some scoreboard upgrades for Yost, but apparently Brandon has bigger plans than just that. Is it possible to love this guy any more?

I just want something big enough and HD enough that I can tell what actually happened on replay.
If we do get new ones, at least dress them up a little bit like Iowa's (picture following). Except I think it would be better if the score was displayed on one side, stats on the other, and a big ass hd screen in the middle, with one of those led message boards we have already on the bottom. Link

That's not much better than what we have now, and the ads are awful. If it's Michigan Stadium, it has to be borderline epic, like our luxury boxes, which are easily the best I've ever seen in a stadium.
This was mentioned in the original articles that were released when Michigan's Athletics budget was released a few weeks ago.
I imagine it will be a couple years before you see a change to the M Stadium scoreboards, though, as I imagine they'll want to finalize whether or not they plan any further expansion before limiting their ability to add seating.

The structural design of this scoreboard is pretty sweet, but I'll be damned if I can figure out what the hell is going on with the content. They have what, 4 screens? Way too busy. Sometimes you just got to keep is simple.
Give me an aggrandized version of the boards we have now. All we need is a bigger screen that is HD. That is all.
The two outside "screens" are actually not screens - they're static ads (well, they rotate, but they're paint, not video).
Were Michigan to go with an HD screen in either or both endzones, I would guess they'd do it the way Texas does, and have the whole thing be one giant screen divided into multiple smaller "screens", and the scoreboard can occupy one of those spaces.
Right now, Texas' is the standard for a scoreboard. Having dual Godzilla-trons would be legendarily awesome.
I appreciate the perspective, but I like Iowa's better than Texas's, and I think Michigan would go for a good balance of modest yet cool, classic yet modern. I can't see Michigan sitting two monstrosities on the big house. Take the luxury boxes - they are very modest, very classic looking. The Texas scoreboard just looks way too big, out of place when folks came to see action on the field, not on a screen. And I would have trouble watching the field with those things distracting me.
I say lose the ads from Iowa's, re-shape it to something that speaks 'Michigan' - modest yet cool, classic yet modern. Keep the monstrosity for the ostentatious folks down south.
We can't be just over-the-top, and I know a lot of people on these boards know that's true. It's fun and funny to joke around about getting 8 godzillatrons in a continuous circle around the top of the stadium, but when it comes to actually installing something, I think we're all for something modest yet better than the current boards.
But I am very, very against putting ads in the Big House. It's just not Michigan. Any ads on the outside or by the concession stand, fine. But once you enter that concourse and step out of that tunnel, it is all about the M, and nothing else.

I'm not suggesting this completely. I'm suggesting using this structure, just replace the small scoreboard and make the middle replay screen bigger, and replace the ad screens on the sides with a scoreboard on one side and stats on the other. We don't need ads.
We are in need of some new scoreboard technology, but I hope they don't get carried away with it.
Just make them approximately the same size as the old ones (perhaps a bit wider given HD requirements), and make sure you can still see the block M on the backside of the scoreboard.

If we make it big enough, we can have more studies and more threads about how that will affect the physics of sound within the stadium! More metallic sunflower contraptions for all! Decibels are logarithmic! Final exclamation for emphasis!
lets put in 3D scoreboards, it'll feel like you are actually there.
Old folks won't have to say down in front, they can just watch the scoreboard.

I have always assumed that they would be hesitant to spend millions on new scoreboards until they determine that no further expansion would occur. Does anyone think there is any possibility that they could build new scoreboards higher and further back so there would be room for further endzone expansion? I don't mean way back or anything relating to a second deck, just enough room for some additional rows in the endzones.
Or to avoid the problem completely, just put two screens the size of the ones at Jerryworld on top of either skybox structure, thus you never limit the endzone seating abilities.

has become the premier badass athletic director, and I'm sure whatever he puts together for new scoreboards will be epic. Maybe he'll fly in James Cameron to design them, or they'll simply project enormous IMAX replays into the sky overhead, or they'll have a small window that features the torture of Brutus the Buckeye on an infinite loop. What's been great about Brandon is that already, he has my trust to not only get it done, but to not cut corners with average, run-of-the-mill results. I'm hoping he also has something to say about the RAWK music as well...
I just hope they play Avatar on Blu-Ray during halftime once they get the screens up.

if I was the AD and it was legal, I would charge admission like $10 dollars a seat and brodcast the away games. Turn around, take the net proceeds and donate the money to High School / Middle schools football programs here in Michigan.

Lets be honest. Without all the atmosphere, spending 4 hours in an outdoor football stadium would be a MISERABLE experience. Couple the normal problems with Michigan Stadium's signature half-face sunburn, well below freezing temperatures, and the climb up and down the stadium stairs, and only the most intense die hards would show up.
I love going to Michigan stadium for a game. If I'm going to watch a game on TV, I'm going to do it with my butt parked in my La-Z-Boy.
So right. Whoever negged this guy, do you really think you'd show up if this went down? The spring game, in great weather, with a showcase of our own players for the coming season, after having no football for half a year, STILL doesn't get as big a turnout as you would think it would, on paper, and that's FREE and IN PERSON!
I know, I know, away games are actual games. But think about where students and fans are during away games. They pack the bars ($ for local business), the dorms and the houses, anywhere there's a TV really. The students are going to get drunk and watch the game on their own time, so they definitely wouldnt go see what is essentially a ghost of a game (What I mean by that is, imagine if you did pack the stadium. It would be so weird, wouldn't you think?).
Okay, so we've established that the students probably won't go to the games, because they're watching elsewhere. That leaves the fans, right? But you're forgetting that the students are the ones who actually live close enough to walk down on game days. I don't think any fan is going to drive more than 50 miles for an away game on a TV screen, no matter how cool and new it looks.
That all being said, I think it would be possible, but for maybe one game. Maybe some big game like Notre Dame or another rival (couldn't be OSU, too late in the year and frigid temps), you could market it and say that you are watching the game and supporting along with thousands of fellow fans instead of in some living room with 5-10.
Otherwise make it in the practice facility, maybe. Everyone could sit in lawnchairs or on the turf and have it projected on the wall on one side, so everyone is facing the same way. Also, it's indoors, so it could really be any game. If you packed that place, it would get LOUD.
This would go over much better in Crisler, but again, there would have to be video upgrades there as well.
I guess I didn't realize just how behind the times Michigan Stadium was in terms of scoreboards until I checked out these screenshots from NCAA Football 2011...
