Freep ranks sports venues in Michigan (continues dumbassery)

The list goes:
8. Crisler Arena- I'll give them that the place isn't that great.
7. Joe Louis Arena- Again not that great.
6. Michigan Stadium- !?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? What!?!?!?!?!?
5. Comerica Park- Fair enough
4. Spartan Stadium- Ahead of Michigan Stadium. Really?!
3. Breslin Center- It is a good stadium but calling it "a perfect college arena" is an overstatement.
2. Ford Field- It is a great stadium. But #2. I don't know
1. The Palace of Auburn Hills- It is a very good venue
I think the Freep overated some of the Spartan venues and did have some good points. What do you think?
Have they ever been there? It's a dump. And no Yost?
Yost is the best sporting venue in the state. If anyone wants to know what home ice looks/sounds like, watch a Michigan hockey game there.

It's seen some memorable moments with the Wings, but as a facility it stinks.

I would only guess Spartan Stadium is ahead because it has had its luxery boxes/suites for a couple of years now... and we havent played 1 game with ours yet.
Other then that I can't think of a single reason why Spartan stadium would "better" then The Big House.
because the dump of a stadium that michigan plays in has been outdated for about 50 years. Its about time they renovated the place.
Usually more reasons to drink yourself to oblivion there.
It is one person's opinion. After reading all of the explanations, I don't have any complaints. He said his opinion of Michigan Stadium will go up once people actually have a chance to experience the new suites. His points about being crammed are accurate. His points about it being quiet are accurate.
Crisler fucking blows and the Breslin Center is pretty fucking nice.
I would have switched Ford Field with the Palace and Comerica with Spartan Stadium.
It's his opinion based on personal experience.
I'm certainly not going to get bent because his opinion doesn't align with mine (although my opinion is usually the only one that matters).

Yost Ice Arena. No other venue will ever top my list for a game in this state.
just contributing to the atmosphere at Yost in whatever minor way I do is a thrill and a rush. I've known that forever. For whatever reason though, this is the first I've considered being on the playing side of that. I think that would be somewhere way beyond awesome (duh). Remind me to be a really good hockey player that goes on to Michigan in my next life...

This is tougher than I thought, but here's mine (minus East Lansing venues - never been):
6. JLA - Old, a dump, a waste of valuable riverfront estate. Fun, though.
5. Crisler - As a die-hard Maize-Rager, I couldn't put it last. Personally, I like it just as much as the Big House. I think it has GREAT atmosphere for big games. Unfortunately, the team rarely gives anyone reason to get excited.
4. The Palace - I'm cool with this being ranked #1 because it was so innovative and is still the blue print for basketball arenas. Personally, I put it at 4.
3. Ford Field - Not much to say here. It's great.
2. Michigan Stadium - The crowdedness of it is an issue. And there's nothing I hate more than a bunch of drunk idiots strolling in during the second quarter and demanding their seats. There's also nothing like a beautiful fall saturday in the Big House, which is why it's fairly easy to put up with all that.
1. CoPa - I love CoPa. I've never had a bad seat and I've never not enjoyed myself. Always a great time at Comerica. Also the staff, in my experiences, has been superb.
1 I pretty much agree that Comerica Park is the best right now. I love going to games there even when the team was terrible.
2 I think the renovated Michigan Stadium will be pretty nice. But I have to admit that the old version was not very pleasant for me. The student section would get crammed. Going to the bathroom or concessions felt like an expedition. It was difficult to see much of the game and by the end of my sophomore year (no video screens back then) I actually stopped going and gave away my tickets to many grateful friends the last two years of school.
3 Ford Field is cool but I haven't been there for a Lions game. I was quietly hoping that the Wolverines would get Pizza Bowl berth during the past couple of futile seasons because I thought it would be fun to watch them play there.
4 I'm actually a fan of Crisler. It is the only venue where I have camped out all night long in order to get tickets. Some of you may remember that back in the day it was first come, first served general admissions seating in the student section. Myself and about 30 others spent a night in a snowstorm before a big MSU showdown. Kids today are so spoiled.
5 I'm pretty ambivalent about the Palace. It's great when the Pistons are good but feels kind of dead when the team is mediocre.
6 Joe Louis is a hole. I'm curious to what the Illitch's eventually come up with next.
And a couple of thoughts on some others...
I loved the Silverdome when Barry Sanders was tearing up the turf. The place could get so loud, it was just crazy and I miss it.
Also, I made it up to Mt Pleasant one year for a WMU-CMU battle and that was a pretty good gameday experience. Felt so casual compared to Michigan and I loved that at halftime you could wander back out to the tailgate parties before returning for the second half.
Wow, no Yost. Well, I guess that's fair since the freep didn't make my list of the top newspapers in Detroit.
They have seen neither the "new" Michigan Stadium nor the "soon to be new" Crisler arena. Stay tuned for updates
Will see to it that stories about the outcomes of both will claim that the final products were "not up to par" somehow, (and they'll go for the extra bonus round by blaming it on the coaches). Book it.

Jamie gave his reasons, and noted his dislike of Michigan Stadium was based on the fact that his ass didn't fit after he got to an OSU game late, which: that would suck if you have no rooting interest and are going for comfort. Tell me you've never taken a guest used to box seats who didn't jump at an opportunity to get up from the seats? The Big House is college football the way college football is supposed to be seen, the way that Fenway Park is baseball the way baseball is meant to be seen, but if you're not a fan of the sport and versed in its tradition, these old structures seem about as interesting as silent movies.
Spartan Stadium nice? Maybe from the pressbox, but I can attest that there are some really bad seats there, and nobody puts it on any list of impressive stadiums for a reason.
Spartan Stadium is a fucking dump. How it can be ranked above Comerica Park, and Michigan Stadium is beyond me. Their main gripe about Comerica is that they had to walk to 3 different stands to get a hot dog? Wow... It's called "exercise."
... maybe that explains why his ass wouldn't fit in his seat at the Big House.

The errors in that list are more egregious than most of the things from the Freep I've seen posted lately. Whatever.
I mean, you have got to be kidding me.
Spartan Stadium was a great atmosphere when Ohio State brought 20,000 people to East Lansing four years ago as the #1 team.
Spartan students started chanting 'Lets go Tigers' after OSU drove the field on its first posession. Then they filed out by halftime.
I do agree with him on Breslin, its a great design and damn tough place to play basketball, they really couldn't have done it any better. Maybe some better upscale amenities. But Spartan Stadium in the top 5 of this list is a joke.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Back up a minute. What the hell is he expecting when he shows up late for MICHGAN-OHIO STATE?!?!?!? Was he late running late for his nail appointment? This isn't Red Wings-Preds in mid-January. No wonder DFN's ratings went down the shitter. They hired talent like this and left him on the air for a decade.
I mean Michigan Stadium isn't that comfortable to sit in, and is known for having the quietest 110,000 fans. Every seat in the stadium is a good one though, and that's a major plus, it should definitely be higher.
how many people (and high school players) around the country say "i've got to see spartan stadium" compared to the "big house". no comparison. this guy is a complete dolt.
Absolutely no way it should be ranked higher than Michigan Stadium. Period. Bottom line. No negotiating. The only fancy thing about that place is its half-sold skyboxes. Other than that its an old piece of conrete and steel crap. I have NO idea why they haven't been sued for handicap access problems. The slopes they have going to the upper level are seriously like 45 degrees. No way I was going to make it down that wet, slippery slope after the game this last year without two hands on the rail.
Spartan Stadium blows. It isn't historical, its just old, crappy, and comparitively small.
2008 Wisconsin and 2009 ND games were extremely loud. Unfortunately, in both 2008 and 2009 there was not much excitement at home beyond those two games. Once we join the traditional levels of success with the new stadium and finally with the sense of entitlement gone from many of the fans, Michigan Stadium will be an unhappy destination for visitors.
If this was Jamie from WDFN fame as indicated in previous comments, we should expect nothing more than this nonsense from him. He is a Northwestern grad. He would probably rate Dyche and Beaver Stadiums the two best in the Big Ten because of the cat noises they play on the loudspeaker after every first down. Why his point of view on this matter is interesting in the slightest, I have no idea. As per usual with this paper, we should simply choose not to read.

i think a lot of people judge facilities by sightlines, suites, amenities, comfort and look. as much as i love michigan stadium until this year its been old, outdated, cramped and in some places its really tough to see. the thing that makes michigan stadium great is its size and history.
What is the criteria for ranking? Size? Sightlines? Intimidation?
I didn't want to click the link, so I guess I'm not aware as to how exactly they're doing the ranking.
But to not have Yost near #1 is blasphemy.

The iconic nature of Michigan Stadium is evidenced by the fact that we are spending $221 million just on an upgrade. $221 million. To put this in perspective, Minnesota just built an entire brand new stadium from scratch for $289 million. In contrast, people (including MSU fans) would think you were loony if you suggested spending $221 million to upgrade Spartan Stadium. When it gets to that point, they will just tear it down and build something else.
actually having spartan stadium on this list at all speaks volumes to its quality but then pretty much citing the reasons for having it there as "i can see good" and "the bathroom lines are short" is insane.
also, its been mentioned, but you haven't given it 5 minutes of thought if you leave yost off of this list
Because half the fans are leaving by mid-way through the third quarter. Spartan Stadium is like the parking lot at a government building at 5:00 PM: empty.
Maybe it's a joke. Perhaps Freep is now doing comedy. That's my only explanation.

With any luck his fat ass will never come back to The Big House again. Personally I think he is trying to back door his way into sitting in the new luxury suites so we can move up his prestigous list. Over played his hand though, enjoy the elbow room at Spartan Stadium.
