OT - Izzo News Conference at 7 PM

Submitted by ambamb on

Channel 7 in Detroit reporting he will announce he will be staying.

Update from Channel 7 - now saying 8:30 pm. Right in the middle of the presidents speach.

I just felt a huge breeze come through the window...must have been the collective sigh of relief coming from East Lansing.

Who holds press conferences to announce the status quo?  I'll be holding a press conference in 5 minutes to announce I'll be at work tomorrow the same time as I was today.  I expect the press to run with this.

I work for a Lansing TV station. Everyone we talked with at MSU claims to know nothing about a press conference tonight. They're telling the Lansing State Journal the same thing. A friend at WDIV tells me Bernie S claims to have a rock-solid source.

Update: we talked with 2 people in the MSU athletic dept, no presser tonight. "Detroit is morons," says source in SID office.

Is the local news sports guy anything other than some guy off the street in a jacket?

It depends on the sports guy. Some of them work their asses off (usually the weekenders) while others are lazy bastards who rip and read wire copy all day.

This is not OT, as per the MGoBoard FAQ:

Anything related to other Big Ten teams or upcoming opponents

UPDATE:  I'm honestly not trying to be a jerk, but apparently me pointing this out makes me a terrible person so neg away.

This may be the end of the "Izzo to make NBA jump" scenarios.  If the Cavs actually offered him 30 million and he turned that down, I just don't see any other NBA teams wasting thier time, effort, or money on him in the future.  Not to mention with the way he drew out the process.

It could go either way.  Izzo (assuming he is, in fact, staying) did mull over this one a long time.  If he didn't have a possible preseason #1 team to coach at MSU, maybe he'd be more inclined to leave.

this was never going to happen.  Izzo was never going to leave State for a team that has no idea if it will be competing for a championship or competing for the top lottery spot.  It was all just head coach/diva drama.

Thanks a lot Lebron, all you had to do is say you were coming back. I hope you choke in the playoffs for the rest of your career. Well at least now Beilien will prove soon he can beat State with Izzo as the coach.

I have to agree with those that say Izzo was never going to leave.  I'm sure he's had his fun holding the collective "Sparty Nation" hostage for more than a week, but in the end it's just a meaningless flirtation most likely geared toward generating publicity, both for MSU and Izzo himself, and in a twisted way endearing him further (if that is possible) to that school and its fans.  I say that knowing full well that some fans have been very critical of his "wavering" and that maybe Izzo did have some small amount of actual interest in the job, but I'm sure everyone will be so relieved when he announces he'll be back that they'll want to throw a parade for him.  I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't think Izzo to Cleveland ever made sense for a plethora of reasons.

I've never been sold on his "Aw shucks..." front.  he's a fine coach and ambassador for the university.

at the end of the day what was the drama all about?  it was pretty cut and dry what the decision was.  here's the salary/terms...here's the facility/community/front office.  lebron may or may not be here.

whatever dude.  me myself and "I"zzo
