OT: Lane Kiffin is a Genius (Seriously!)
I want you to ask yourself a few questions. I will provide the answers for you, though.
1) Is Lane Kiffin a good football coach? (No)
2) Is he a good recruiter? (Oh yeah)
3) Would any respectable school can a coach that is the kind of failure he's doomed to be after 3 years or so? (Definitely)
4) Is he really stupid enough to not know the situation he was walking into at USC, re: Sanctions? (I HIGHLY doubt it)
Everyone talks about Lane Kiffin taking the USC job because USC was his dream destination. True? Probably, but that's NOT why he took it. After two/three years like his first at Tennessee, he was definitely going to be "forced out", if not fired outright. There was only one choice if he didn't want to end up at the ass end of the football coaching universe after such a thing.
Go somewhere you will be rewarded for failure.
Assuming Kiffin had a pretty good idea of what was coming down on USC, he made the most brilliant move possible. Not only is he now the head coach at where he wants to be the head coach, but he gets at LEAST 5 years now, at LEAST, where losing monumentally will not be considered a failure. It will in fact be considered the only possible thing that could happen. FURTHERMORE, he won't just get a pass... he'll be glorified, because his Wizard Hat Supreme will, without any doubt, still manage to convince top flight recruits to come to a severely hampered program.
He'll go 2-10 in his first year, pull in a five star or two, and practically be crowned king for it!
The dude is a certifiable evil genius. No doubt about it.

It's not as absurd as you would think if they have mass defections from rising sophomores, juniors and seniors as is rumored.
I don't disagree, if that comes to pass. But http://www.conquestchronicles.com has been posting tweets from incoming athletes and established players, all of whom are saying they don't care about this and will stay. Must be 15 or 20 of them up there by now.
I was thinking the same thing this morning. Him going there makes a lot more sense now. It also makes more sense as to why he was able to negotiate such a fat contract too. Pretty savvy move on his part.
But I still think that the lost of scholarships is going to really hurt them over the next 5-7 years. Especially if there is a run on transfers with the current team and limited scholarships for the next few years.
Yeah he will get a free pass for a while but in the end no matter what it will always come down to W's!

I agree though with your statement. No one knows until it's all said and done, it being [insert name]'s career. The resume doesn't show it all -- all which includes reputation, character and ethics.
Wait...he's a genius for inheriting a situation where USC is potentially dethroned as The Program of college football? Riding the Pete Carroll monetum/recruiting classes sounds like a better long-term move than losing 30 schollies and missing two rose bowls.
Then he would have to succeed. Now, he does not. He's free to fail all he wants.
If he can navigate this successfully, he's going to look like a genius. I don't see it happening, but recruits will still like SoCal and Kiffin's style.

should usc appeal the ncaa penalties?
if were usc, i don't believe i would. the ncaa did a thorough (and damn lengthly) investigation so an appeal likely wouldn't significantly reduce the penalties. and most importantly it would be a dark cloud hanging over their head during the appeal. i'd rather accept the penalties immediately so it would diminish its effects on this year's and next year's recruiting...with likely redshirts, they would only miss one postseason. even though the lose thirty scholarships, its not as severe as it would be for other schools considering they have four-star recruits on the bench. they will still get four- and five-star recruits on the field.
The sample size is a bit small, given that he's only been a college head coach for one year, but a 4-4 record in the SEC and the most competitive game anybody played against Alabama all year have to count for something. Whether it's him or his staff is immaterial for the purposes of debating his prospects at USC.
The dude's brought his outstanding staff to a school completely stocked with absurdly gifted athletes who were mainly new starters last year and STILL went 9-4 (with a victory over OSU); returning most of the defense (including almost all of the linebackers) and upgrading the positional coaching like WHOOOAH is probably going to produce some true nastiness down deep in the trenches.
He's going to be playing in a league that doesn't load his schedule up with Alabama, Georgia, and Florida every year, and whose bowl representatives went 2-5 last year. I'm not saying HE HIMSELF will be the best coach in the country last year, but let's not get ahead of ourselves and say the dude's gameplanning and his staff's preparation aren't suited to getting things done in the new situation.
Pete Carroll is the real genius.

the LA party circuit connection swing to UCLA in light of all this. Still in the city, still can be seen partying with the starlets at the Playboy mansion, 'PLUS we can still go to a bowl!' Heck, Freddie Mitchell was a fixture at Hef's place during his tenure as a Bruin.
I'd look for Neuhiesel to really turn up the heat with his competitive recruiting, and possibly take some of the best perks of SC recruiting with him.

I think his ego is too big to think about needing extra time to fail. He's the kind of guy who thinks he's the best no matter what and he probably explains things in his head by placing blame elsewhere.
I think this move is smart for him, but he may not know that.

It looks like it's cold out but nobody else seems to think so.
USC should be the best team in the Pac 10 next year. It'll be another year where the P10 is pretty weak. Oregon is breaking in a new QB, and their D is worse than USC's. The middle of the pack with Arizona, Stanford, OSU, and Washington should be decent, but USC should be fine with the talent they have (assuming the upperclassmen don't all leave). Overall, their schedule isn't that hard. They could definitely win 10 games.
Then what happens?
They still have a lot of talent, I guess all that talent will watch bowl games from their television sets the next two years though.
He's also reportedly getting $4 million per year.

I'm still in shock that USC had the balls to hire someone who was an assistant when the violations occurred and you can pretty much gaurantee was partly responsible for the "lack of institutional control".
I don't buy this. Kiffin walked into a pretty bad situation at Tennessee. I can't us that performance as a predictor of the future. The Raiders deal..........well no one wins there so I throw that out too. Kiffin will be fine at USC. He will be able to recruit and put great teams on the field.
Kiffin turned Jonathan Crompton from much-maligned to a very solid quarterback and NFL draft-pick. He might be a little ignorant, but he's got some of the best recruiters on his staff, and they can coach pretty well.
But we'll see how he does against Texas eh?

... I have not seen mentioned is that both Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron were at USC when the Reggie Bush violations occurred. It says alot about how seriously USC takes this whole situation.
