Good Lord who did the seedings, someone out there thinks there are 7 better sports towns in the country? What are they on?
I just voted. With the Lakers playing for the title right now this is gonna be tough. Detroit could use any positive news it can get right now so I hope we can beat L.A.!
Even more so for all the shitburgers Lions fans have had to eat over the years. And I didn't even grow up there.
I live near LA (Orange County), but still voted for Detroit. I had a conversation with my friend about how most LA fans are fair weather fans. Diehards would care, but most people would not give a damn if the Lakers, Dodgers or USC are doing poorly.
The issue is that there are lots of things you can do in LA and the surrounding areas. There are many more sports towns that I consider better than LA. Detriot would be one of them.
Same, I've been in LA for 3 years (Hermosa for the first 2) and I still rep all the Detroit teams. I agree with all of the above, LA people don't love their teams like we do. Sure, there's Lakers stuff everywhere when they're in the finals (which is a lot lately) but for every Laker fan in LA there's a person who hates the Lakers.
LA teams have a lot of success, but LA has so many people from other US cities or foreign countries who couldn't give a shit about the LA teams. The population of LA is not a good indicator for sports fans.
I lived in AA for only two years while my dad was getting his Masters. I have lived in So. California since I was 6 (22 now) and I can't root for any LA teams. The true fans in LA are Clippers fans.
It's in the bag.
It's currently (as of 4:14pm e.t.) 68-38 Detroit.
We need more...
Bigger Media Market?? No contest in my estimation Detroit is the better sports city for many reasons. So I don't need to be outvoted by a large contingent of unknowledge, trendy, fair weather, perusing sports enthusiasts to understand which town is better. I'll put my four Detroit major Sports franchises against any four in the world.
to the Pinchers Crab Shack fish sandwich voters. That'll get it done.
I chuckle at these things but readily admit I went over and voted. Based on what I hear from people I know in LA, it seems like a pretty apathetic sports town compared to most ...
we upended them in 2004. I'll be damned if we have to face Boston.
Detroit currently leads 66-33%. The LA fans think they're a better sports town? Yea maybe the Lakers win a lot but so do the Wings and the Detroit fans are more die hard. LA is full of celebrities just trying to make an appearance for their new movie.
Someone muzzle Tater before he tells everyone we crashed the vote
Detroit has an NFL team?
I thought this was a "trick" question, like "What weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks?"
2011 SUPER BOWL CHAMPS BABY!!!!! YOU KNOW IT!
Denying that the Lions are an NFL team belittles my suffering. Like being a Lions fan isn't bad enough.
THANKS A LOT.
Chitown give the D a break...this online poll might be the only thing this town wins for a decade.
134-47.
LA in this argument ....you bring up the Lions ? Do you know ANYTHING about the Lions?
Screw LA, I'm a die-hard Boston fan and I am a wolverine to boot. Detroit wins. Eff you Nicholson!
Sporting News voted Detroit "Best Sports City" in 2007, and I believe we won ESPN's "Titletown" in 2008. You know, for as much as the MSM ignores Detroit, based on fanaticism alone, we trump all these cities. That's not counting titles, which is also staggering.
But that's who we are. We don't need those labels anyway, we've always done things on our own terms. Beating the odds.
I personally have been so loyal to them over the years and I really hope we start winning soon even though it just seems anything and everything goes wrong every game to put us in a losing situation.
I stayed at the alumni hotel for the 2007 Rose Bowl, downtown LA. New Years day was on a Monday (I think) and there was Sunday NFL football the day before.
Yes, I didn't know where I was going, but downtown LA, on a Sunday, I was absolutely unable to find a sports bar showing NFL football. Not one.
That would not have happened in any true sports town.
LA is a fraud.
You didn't look hard enough, there are plenty.
Well, downtown LA was not a good place to look. Downtown LA is DEAD on the weekends. That doesn't mean it's a lame sports city, it just means it's a lame downtown. NFL football is actually really big in LA despite there not being a team here. Everyone has their team.
Seriously though, if you ever go to LA again, DO NOT stay downtown. There are a million cool parts of LA, downtown is not near the top.
Los Angeles
Detroit
Wooo obscure internet poll bragging rights!
It's currently a massacre, we are up by almost 300 votes. MGoRockTheVote.
I wonder how many of those votes came from us here at Mgoblog.
Yeah, how are those Rams doing?
Anyone who doesn't think LA is a superior sports town is nuts. Sorry, guys, and I'm still living in Metro Detroit.
Hockey doesn't count. The Lakers are clearly a superior team to the Pistons, and historically, the Dodgers edge the Tigers. They don't even currently have an NFL team and they have more superbowls than the Lions. If we're talking college, I think USC and UCLA historically have the edge on anything the state of Michigan offers in either football and basketball.
Just because enough unemployed in the state of Michigan have time to repeatedly vote on a poll on the internet doesn't make it true.
I'm going to try to refrain from calling you any names, but when you make ridiculous backhanded comments about Michigan's unemployment rate, you just end up looking like a flaming douchebag.
I also suggest you do some research on the subject too, consindering that California's 13% unemployment rate is currently tied with Rhode Island for 3rd worst in the nation. With your ridiculous logic, LA should have a hell of a lot more votes then it does since all unemployed workers do nothing but sit at their computer all day looking for meaningless polls to vote on.
Last, but not least. Hockey DOES count.
If you're going to count hockey, you might as well count major league soccer.
YEAH BECAUSE HOCKEY = MLS LULLLLLLLZ
The NHL is a billion dollar a year business which absolutely slaughters MLS in both revenue and TV ratings. Fuck off.
OK since California has one of the nations highest unemployment rate. Also considering California has a much larger total population, it shouldnt matter in a couple hundred votes so your theory is flawed. Shit LA compared to Detroit has to be atleast 4x higher.
Are we talking about better sports teams or a better sports town? Because Detroit is clearly a better sports town with a more passionate fanbase and more vested interest in the teams. The problem is that a lot of the people at LA games are transplants from other cities and dont really give two shits. Thats why the Lakers crowds arent rowdy and Dodgers games are empty before the 7th inning stretch.
And can we get an update when Detroit plays the NY-Dallas winner? The bottom half of the bracket looks easy. The comments on that board made me laugh,
The Detroit Tigers have been around since 1894. The LA Dodgers since 1958. (No, Brooklyn doesn't count for this argument.) Respective World Series records: 4-6 and 5-4, so only a slight edge to LA there.
And BS on hockey not counting. How you can discount an Original Six team with 11 Stanley Cups is beyond me.
I'll grant you the Lakers are better, but don't you have to subtract something for the Clippers? And as mentioned, while the Lions haven't won any Super Bowls, they have won championships.
But being a sports town is more than just number of championships: until the past couple of seasons, with the really bad Michigan economy, even though the Lions sucked, they had a long streak of sold out games. That kind of loyalty puts Detroit ahead in my book.
An edge is an edge nonetheless, and the Dodgers are clearly a better baseball franchise, especially in the short period of time that they've been in LA. Sorry. Rutgers has been playing college football since the beginning of time. Would we award them points for that? Of course not.
Hockey doesn't count because it's hockey, and only the upper midwest gives a shit. And are we really pulling up streaks of sold-out games? The Lions didn't sell out jack diddly poo last year, and neither did the Pistons. Hell, the Wings couldn't even sell out playoff games last year. I get so sick of hearing people pull the loyalty card for Detroit fans. Bullshit. Just because your teams suck doesn't mean you have loyal fans.
Every city everywhere believes that they have the best "sports town" anywhere, but few have any right to say it. Detroit is a bandwagon sports town, period.
Waah waah cry you a river.
Yeah, those bandwagon fans have the 8th highest attendence in the NBA this year for a team that finished 28 games below .500 and with the highest unemployment rate in the nation. Stupid bandwagoners!
It goes the other way round, dummy. Detroit caring about sports that LA doesn't care about makes Detroit a better sports town. LA can't even support the most popular league in the country.
This is really the world's stupidest argument. What it boils down to is you claiming that not one single person in town could give a shit about sports and it would be a great sports town. Of course loyalty matters.
This is so fucking profoundly stupid.
Hockey doesn't count because LOL NOBODY CARES? Fuck you. Enough people care that the Stanley Cup final was just on a major network in primetime. Hell, LA seemed to care when they were actually good at hockey in '93... of course after that they stopped caring because LA is a shitastic sports town.
Who gives a flying fuck if their teams are better historically? That's not the question. It's about which city has better sports fans and traditions. LA's biggest sports traditions are half empty stadiums and leaving after the 7th inning to beat traffic.
If Detroit is a bandwagon town then so is every other city in the country. Newsflash! Nobody wants to pay to watch a shitty product. That's true in Detroit like it is in LA or New York or Chicago or anywhere else.
And unemployment jokes to top it all off? Thanks Leno! Does it make your dick feel bigger to mock the less fortunate? I hope you're looking to move in the short term because the last thing this area needs is assholes like you who do nothing but look down on and insult this great region and it's people.
