If it actually does pertain to the arrests that does not make sense to me.  That knowledge was in hand when he made his commitment.  If admissions was not consulted then, shame on the coaches.  If they were consulted then, and are only now holding up his admission, shame on admissions.

Michigan has opened its doors to others who made mistakes, but redirected their lives and had great potential (e.g. http://wwww.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20060514/news_lz1j14nunn.html)  I have to think there is more to the story than just misgivings about the juvenile arrests.

So, the speculation in the article is that he might not be cleared because of "previous transgressions".

RR is probably fighting hard for him but with issues with players like Feagin he might have a difficult time trying to convince the admissions department that he can keep him under control. If that is what is holding him out, I still think he gets in, but it will be another straw on the camel's back for RR's job at the end of the season if it doesn't work out.

What about this theory that I just came up with (if someone else has already - I apologize in advance):

- Michigan got wind of Dorsey's potential GPA issue in his core classes, decided he couldn't be admitted

- Now it comes out that he's good to go with his last semester of grades for the NCAA's

- His grades are better than when Michigan looked at them ~4 months ago

- He could now possibly be let in to Michigan

Of course you could take this thing in about 1,000 different directions.  I'd be willing to bet Dorsey's last semester of grades improved his GPA, thus solidifying him with the NCAA's, but not yet with Michigan.  Michigan now needs to have a meeting to decide if they can let the kid in, or if his grades "still aren't good enough" (aka we're not going out on a limb for you RR).

Do the right thing admissions.  Let the kid in.

From my admissions experience (BCS school, top 50 academically), this is most likely the case.  It is also likely that someone high up in admissions will want to talk to him personally about his prior brush with the law, to get a feel for how he has matured and grown and will not pose a threat to UM's students and reputation.

If I'm jamiemac, I'd bet $ he gets in.

Once he finds out what Mike Barwis will do to him if he slacks off in class, his grades will improve.

And besides, with those scores he seems to be on par with one of the sorority girls that lived down the hall from me in Couzens freshman year.

Well, I like the fact that this journalist appears to have interviewed someone (Dorsey's highschool coach) for information upon which to base an article.

This part seems unsettling though, and seems to confirm the concerns raised in the previous thread about denying admission in or after June based upon information (presumably) available in February:

James suggested that some of Dorsey's issues with his admission may stem from his previous transgressions with the law.

"It's very possible," James added. "I've been talking with the coaches [at Michigan] and they continue to work on it."

That's got to be a first for them...not using "sources close to the situation".

This article is a whole hell of a lot more positive than any of the premium sites or Sam Webb on the air, but I would expect it to be because it's being written from a national perspective.

It still gives me some hope though.

That's the real question...provided it's true that he actually qualified, what changed in 4 months that caused this?

I hate the impression that the Freep "won" with this one because Michigan backed off of the kid.  We all know how much they hated on the staff, AD, and university for taking his commitment in the first place.

Damn you Snyder, Rosendouche, Sharp...damn you.

What the fuck did the Free Press win exactly? Newspapers have a job to do, report the news. Some things that you and I may view as stupid, are the same things that millions of other people want to hear about. Nobody won here, except maybe Florida State, because if he chooses to go there, they are getting what I presume to be one hell of an athlete.

Respectable, non-biased newspapers do those things.  I would hardly throw Freep into that category.

The Freep made it about winning the day they sent a columnist to write an objective piece in which the writing was unbelievably poor and outright false, the research minimal, and the actual sources non-existent.  Then they kept it up with consistent attacks against the staff and AD in various columns and stories, and then followed it up with their actions at RRod's press conference on Signing Day.  Just ask some people about Sharp's behavior at that event.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but even you and I can see there is much more than "reporting the news" happening here.

I know that you're a smart guy, and pretty well-informed, and that you're probably espousing a kind of contrarian view for purposes of discussion.  I have some respect for you in all of that.  You're making yourself clear, and making some valid points.

I just hope, for God's sake, that neither you nor I have any delusions about what Drew Sharp was doing that day in the press conference with Rodriguez.  That wasn't reporting.  No more so than when Sharp was actively trying to provoke David Brandon with the word "cheating," several months later.  It was all the same thing.

We can agree to disagree about many things; I'd never presume that we see everything the same way.  But the Freep's treatment of Dosrey in that period of about 72 hours was monstrous!!!!  Period.  Don't even get me started on Mick McCabe's terrible, unprecedented, uninformed editorializing two days later.

Sharp did what Sharp does to EVERYONE - he wrote a stupid, moralizing column that essentially laid down an ultimatum that, if not met, he would be OFFICIALLY CONCERNED. It wasn't unique to Dorsey,or even Michigan - it was Sharp being a flaming asshole, which is unspectacular because...Sharp is a flaming asshole.

Which is not the job of a newspaper, nor is it "reporting the news." It's much lower than that. It won't change, but let's not act like it wasn't reprehensible, or that it was what was supposed to happen, just because he does it to everyone. It's reprehensible every time it happens, and none of it is "reporting the news."

Let's not pretend that the majority of the athletes in our revenue producing schools are admitted to the University based on their academic merits.

Let the kid in, we need him in the secondary. He's a huge talent.

Oh yeah, and there's this whole "turning over a new leaf, second chances thing" that could work out well for the kid. Where else to make it happen than Ann Arbor

First of all, I think it's hard to isolate any one football player's financial value to a program as big as Michigan's.  Sure, good players can only help the value of the program.  But one VHT DB, who hasn't played a down of college ball ... really tough to say how much of a cash cow he may be, no?

But, more to the point,  the comment I responded to used the phrase "put butts in the seats."  Apparel. prestige, notoriety, fundraising: these things are not butts in the seats.  Don't let the f-bomb fool you - I was just kidding - but saying that Dorsey would increase attendance at games was a bit of a brain fart, which is what I was trying to evoke with the title of my first post.

I sure would love to see Michigan give this kid a chance

.. It would be awsome to watch him flying around with that 4.3 speed strait beasting on people with a winged helmet on ..

So it looks like he made it through the clearinghouse but we are not going to let him ? Is this more crap from people inside that don't like Rich Rod and are doing everything they can to get him fired?

This old guard at our school is really pissing me off. Bo is dead and Carr is gone , do they really think Les Miles and Jim H are going to magically make us better next year? Those people need to step outside into the real world and see that Michigan is on the edge right now and millions and million of fans/alumni need hope. Demar Dorsey has never played a down but its the potential of greatness that makes him important.

Give Rich Rod a chance  ...  Give us all a chance to be Michigan again!

This isn't the athletic department, it's the admissions department. I doubt they care too much who is coach. What they care about it making sure that the students that they let in have a high likelihood of graduating.

For those in the know of university politics/organization, are althetes judged on the same standard as traditional applicants?  That is to say, is Dorsey being judged as a seperate case to admissions or against a stack of other files (applicants)?

How much pull does the Athletic department have when it comes to getting kids in with lower test scores/GPA's?  I'm sure there has been a few football players in the history of the program that didn't have a 3.5 GPA, and a 28 ACT test score, right?  How would Dorsey be considered different than any other incoming freshman player that has ever played there?  What might be the reasoning that admissions would give the athletic department for a denial, and could there be an appeal to a higher power?

Just curious, I mean people compare this to Adrian Witty, which isn't the same.  This an incoming freshmen who is presumably academcialy elgible.  I'm interested what issues are being played out in admissions.

bdwiese

June 7th, 2010 at 6:13 PM ^

Not a ton of sway really, but I've read a few things that basically say "eh, some, but barely".

Admissions and AD is kept completely separate, but I'm sure there are other factors that might have some pull to get a kid in - overall GPA of the program at that time, stats saying how many kids were having academic issues, donors (guessing on that one).  Each one of these kids are completely individual cases where some riskier kids are worked with by Admissions (see Gallon and Turner) and some are not (Witty and Dorsey).  Plus Admissions can always take into account "other things" outside of grades and test scores.

Noahdb

June 7th, 2010 at 5:11 PM ^

Anyone know if Admissions automatically red-flags kids with criminal records? Michigan wouldn't be the first school to do so. Typically, you have a review board that just looks over the flagged cases and makes sure that if the students were required to take part in some sort of rehab or probationary program that they've actually done so, that they've stayed out of trouble, etc.

If he's cleared the NCAA hurdles, he's 99 percent of the way through. Admissions isn't hearing the kid's name for the first time.

Assuming this is accurate and Dorsey has qualified.... This doesn't smell right at all.  I'm very disappointing with  Michigan admissions.

June 7th, 2010 at 5:24 PM ^

The shit about compliance and admissions got me thinking a bit. I've heard hundreds of times how there are so many people "behind the scenes" who do work that no one knows about and nobody is grateful for. They are the long snappers of Michigan...you only notice them when they fuck up spectacularly, as in now.

maizenbluenc

June 7th, 2010 at 5:48 PM ^

I was wondering that myself. Supposedly Dorsey had projected to be qualified with a specific GPA and ACT score -- then he wasn't because his grades weren't high enough in core classes. No his coach publicizes both GPA and ACT score in a quote (which isn't cool).

I am wondering if he really is cleared by the NCAA, and if so when was he cleared.

After the Feagin fiasco, they had to have had a long discussion on Demar's case before extending an LOI to him.

Whatever the issue is, if it is not academics, then it must be something that came up between signing day and now.
