M Golf's Kyle Mueller wins NCAA Columbus Regional

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

After another disappointing season from Michigan Men's Golf (61-68-2) ended at the B1G Championships 3 weeks ago, Kyle Mueller was selected as an individual to the NCAA Regional Championships.

He traveled down to Columbus to try to replicate Lion Kim's 2011 solo run and win a regional title.

Mueller is ranked #14 in the country and had 5 individual tournament crowns prior to this regional.

Mueller posted a 73 on Monday in the first round and found himself in an 18th place tie, with OSU's Scarlet Course getting the best of him on the opening day. Yesterday was much better though as he collected 3 birdies and was one under part before play was suspended due to lightning in the area.

The second round resumed this morning at 7am with Mueller still having to play four holes to wrap up the second round. Mueller came up big with three pars and a birdie to finish the second round with a nice score of 69 (-2). The final round took place with Mueller having his best performance of the postseason and the best final round performance of anyone in the NCAA Columbus Regional.

Mueller knotched seven birdies and as a result, took the NCAA Regional Championship finishing with a final round score of 66 (-5) and total score after 3 rounds of 208, beating out both Zach Bauchou and Matt Wolff of #1 Oklahoma State who tied with 210 each. Pretty impressive.

Kyle Mueller's regional championship win puts him into the NCAA Championships which will be taking place in Stillwater, OK on May 25-30, in search of Michigan's first individual National Champion in 71 years.

Mueller has been an all-time great for Michigan with today's regional title giving him 6 tournament championships, tying him with fellow Michigan great Michael Harris.

Disappointing that the 66 year B1G Championship drought is still alive, even after having Mueller for four seasons and junior Nick Carlson who was in the final four of the US Amatuer. I'm sure Warde is taking notes on that.

Wasn't Carlson hurt for a lot of the year? I thought I read somewhere that he was battling through injuries. Certainly would have some effect on the season. Too bad the team wasted Mueller's talent.

So the guy is the individual champion in one of the 6 NCAA regionals, and his prize is...a pin flag?  With the OSU logo?  (Yes, I understand OSU was the host, but still).

Hopefully he will eventually get a trophy with his name on it.  It really seems a little stingy if he doesn't get a trophy.
