OT: What are you listening to?

I haven't seen one of these in a while, so here we are. My favorite rapper, Royce Da 5'9'' has released two albums recently. Prhyme 2 and The Book of Ryan. I also like moody indy rock.

Always timely! Happy to have seen them a few times including on their final tour. Obviously Geddy vocals weren't the best but hey I can't choose the era in which I am alive and able to see them.

Really loving the Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats latest cd (Tearing at the Seams). Really a step up from their first cd.

Otherwise, waiting for the new Burn the Priest cd to come out in another week.

Its a fine fine album. I wasnt a fan of them before...didnt dislike them either, but I listened to the new one out of curiousity since I interviewed Nathaniel last year. A huge leap forward for the band and I couldnt believe my ears. Its also one of the best produced albums I've heard in recent years. Going to see them live in a few weeks and that will be the true litmus test.

I've been listening to a ton of Matt Pless. He reminds me a lot of a young Bob Dylan who can sing. I highly recommend giving him a listen.

The palmer squares and ceschi have also been in heavy rotation

listening/half-listening as I went, to: St. Vincent; a Gil Evans and Miles Davis best-of CD that was uninspired; Harold Land; The Stylistics; the Congos; the Impressions; covers of songs from the Beach Boys Pet Sounds; the Oxford American Kentucky tribute; Frank Sinatra w. the Red Norvo Quintet; The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill; and a bunch of CDs from the Florida Folklife collection.

Michael Kiwanuka is soulful and really good. Medeski Martin and Wood “Shackman” - great road trip album. I like APC but their new album is pretty bad. Thirteenth Step is good from start to finish. Ween Chocolate and Cheese is crazy and wonderful (and a bit offensive). The Soft Bulletin by flaming lips is also a good jam

The wood brothers- love em, some of their songs have profound meaning for me, got to see them at The Ark a couple of weeks ago. Reign wolf- would like to see him live The devil makes three- great band that puts on a heck of a show. Saw them this winter for the second time Escaping pavement- Detroit band that I just got into The temperance movement The band of heathens- these guys were so clean and talented. Impressive live. Saw them at The Ark Dr. Dog- love their older stuff and just started the new album Jason isbell- very impressive at the folk festival The huntress and holder of hands- if you know her story and her previous work, this album is moving Chris Stapleton- I loved him in the steeldrivers and his solo stuff has been great. Dan Auerbach- I have enjoyed everything he’s created. Great live Josh Garrels- music for the soul

I have had a real hard time connecting with newer music I hear. A large part due to the lack of time to sit and really listen or search out newer stuff. That paired with not going to all the shows I used to.

That being said if I get to listen with no outside influences I throw on Amon Amarth, Between the Buries and Me, Bright Eyes, Nothington, The Avett Brothers, or Iron and Wine 95% of the time.

After Avicii passed, I've been listening to a lot of his music again.

It's amazing how music can instanly bring up memories and moments from your past when you first heard the music. Avicii brings up some warm and dear memories from my college days.

Saw them Saturday at Ascend Ampetheater in Nashville. One of my favorite artists and WOW do they put on a show live. The drumline they rolled out nailed it. May be my all-time favorite concert.

Tell Mama. Recorded at Fame Studios with the Swampers. The title track kicks ass.

Some Northern Soul classics .....

Misery by the Dynamics, a tune that was famously just flat out ripped off by Pete Townshend pre Who.

Your Time is My Time, Bob and Earl.

I Spy For The FBI by Jamo Thomas and The Party Boys Orchestra

Turning My Heartbeat Up by MVPs.

And Charlie Musselwhite's lastest record ... I think ... I Had Trouble, maybe my favorite Charlie Musselwhite.

All of it hook laden soul and blues.
