OT: The Americans (spoilers)
Again, spoilers ahead...
I assume we must have fans of the show on the board. I'm just now caught up, and the Jennings seems headed for disaster.
Questions: How far do you think Philip is willing to go to help Oleg? Will he be willing to risk Elizabeth's arrest or death? Will Elizabeth ever refuse an assignment because it involves, say, killing two parents and leaving them to be found by their young son? Will either Philip or Elizabeth survive? What will become of Paige?
Also, who do you think is going to win the Cold War? Will the Soviet system collapse because of its sclerotic management and misguided understanding of human nature? Or will the contradictions of capitalism lead to a proletarian revolution in which the capitalists sell the revolutionaries the very rope the revolutionaries use to hang them?
Is this some kind of an electronic play appearing on that new-fangled thing called a "television"?
It's on between the Proctor & Gamble Variety Hour and the Jack Benny Show.
I have been considering starting a thread on the show in recent episodes and was going to for tomorrow’s episode but this will do :).
Stan finally starting to realize who the Jennings are reminds me a lot of Breaking Bad when Hank is figuring out who Walt is.
Wonder what will become of Oleg? I think he’s a goner . One of my favorite characters in TV right now .
EDIT: Also, last week's dismembering of a corpse was CRAZY and I loved the choice to have no background music at all for that scene.
Finally, I could see Stan investigating "Aunt Helen" and that will be what breaks the case.
... my official prediction is Paige is the biggest goner, even more so than Elizabeth, Phillip, and Oleg. Her commitment for the kgb life last week I think sets her up to die before the series ends.
Stan is a moron. Or the show is doing a bad job at coaxings Stan's investigatory genius. If he doesn't spring into action after the Phil/Elizabeth's imaginary client, I'm gonna ditch this otherwise good final season out of sheer principle.
Rumors also going round that Elizabeth has AIDS (legion on her face).
to be fair , Stan was suspecious from the very start (pilot episode) and Elizabeth and Phillip are pros at hiding this stuff, and Stan has his own personal matters to deal with outside of work.
What's more non-believeable is Elizabeth and Phillip not ever moving and just living across the street from a Fed for 8 years or whatever it is now. But eh, not a big deal I guess.
Also, that'd be pretty interesting if you quit the show with just a few episodes left in the series haha.... but since you like Mad Men and The Americans, that automatically means you have great taste in television so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
I'm pretty good at TV. Just being honest.
It ain't braggin' if you can do it.
I was thinking that veryone else will end up caught and Paige will walk away to continue being a "illegal"
I'm betting on our team.
I think that Phillip will piece together what Elizabeth is doing and ultimately decide that for the good of the world and to save his family he has to sell her out. I'm guessing that storyline is going to involve both Oleg and Stan. It will also likely involve Claudia trying to figure out how to get to and kill Phillip.
Almost forgot about her . Maybe Andrea won’t be KGB but will still leave Stan for The Governor
I think shes a Red Herring
I don't know but this show is killin' it right now. The suspense is awesome and I'm actually sorta invested in these characters, except for Paige who is annoying as hell.
Christian Paige or commie Paige?
Trying to tell Phillip about how the world is. Come on, you ever fit a woman into a suitcase?
I think that Stan and Phillip will have a Rick and Louis moment from Casablanca......and "this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship". That's probably after Phillip kills Claudia....who is General Strasser in this scenario.
I have no idea what happens to Elizabeth but it seems like she's gone too far to turn back now.
shown that she will hold firm to ideology. Phillip keeps getting punched in the chops. She has sex with him and then needs him to screw Kimmy for the cause. He helps her out in Chicago (with everything that entailed) and she's off on the job again. She won't change and hopefully he realizes soon that family isn't going to every be her priority.
I think she'll either die or lose everyone only to see that it was all in vain as the events of 89-91 occur.
One could see it coming all along that it'd be Henry that blows the operation. I am also assuming Elizabeth's suicide pill comes into play too. This is going to be a wild ending.
They all die.
A couple episodes ago was pretty brutal, when Elizabeth and her team were tasked with finding the courier who defected, and they did. His wife picked a bad time to have a reconciliation visit and to go to the kitchen.
Philip, spy with a conscience, got a goodbye fuck with Kimmy, whom he was supposed to set up for abduction, then told her not to go to a communist country. I was kind of surprised that he got guilted into going to Chicago to help Elizabeth.
I think he gets caught and arrested. The FBI will be closing in on Elizabeth, but she'll take the pill rather than give in. Paige will get that internship - I think they have to leave something up in the air.
Because it's TV? Maybe Philip, after not saying anything, finally confesses to his and Elizabeth's activities, but says they never told the kids anything? Maybe the FBI keeps it under wraps, so Paige's future employers never get told? One hand doesn't know what the other hand is doing.
He had suspicions in the beginning but, if you think about, he had a lot of things going on that distracted him over the past few years(pumping his Russian mistress for information, his faltering marriage, catching Martha, and so on).
Additionally, aside from working long hours, nothing about them seemed odd, and even that was easily explained by being small business owners. So he's had that idea at the back of his mind for several years but it doesn't came back to the front again until Phillip and Elizabeth both have to go out of town for a client emergency Thanksgiving weekend for their travel business.
Henry being so disgruntled about his parents being away all the time, got Stan thinking again. I'm wondering how he's going to explain to his superiors that he lived next door to a nest of Soviet agents for almost a decade without catching on.
Then FX can sell the writes to Netflix or Hulu to reboot the story with Paige.
Yeah go on and give up your life, boyfriends, friends in general so you can "Make a difference" as a Russian spy where you have to kill and fu*k strangers to get your missions done, very smart. God i really wouldn't be mad if Paige is killed, shes just beyond dumb this season.
she's got to deal with all that Russian propaganda from Claudia. Maybe she needs Pastor Tim back to challenge Claudia to a duel.
Especially now that he and Spyros have called a temporary truce and might be on the path to a beautiful friendship.
Despite the impossibility of a satisfying conclusion, I will be riveted until the final moment (provided it's not a fade to black set to a Journey song). Philip kills Claudia, Renee kills Dennis. Oleg kills Elizabeth, Stan kills Paige, Philip defects. Arkady Ivanovich plays the Boris Yeltsin role in the breakup of the Soviet Union. Henry runs for POTUS in 2024.
