Shooting near Diag
I haven't seen this hit the news or social media yet and I know a lot of Michigan fans like myself get much of their Ann Arbor news from this site, so I thought I would send the community an update in case anyone is looking for more information.
I work on Campus near the corner of State Street and North University. Around 930 PM I heard a large boom from my office. It didn't sound like a gunshot at first, but within about a minute 3 police cars pulled up having traveled fast and with full lights and sirens on display. I could hear officers instructing someone across the street to get on the floor, and though my view was obscured, I do believe this might have been a "guns drawn" type circumstance. Within another 60 seconds another 4 to 5 police cars arrived on the seen, later followed by two ambulances. The entire section of North University between State Street and Fletcher was taped off for a period of time and only emergency vehicles were let through.
Whatever the incident was, it seemed like it was resolved very quickly because after about 20 minutes about half of the police presence left. As I write this I know vehicles are still on the scene.
I'm not sharing this to rubberneck or swirl speculation, but again I get much of my Ann Arbor news from this site and thought I would share in case others are seeking information about what happened this evening.
Praying that no one died or was severely injured.
I don't think anyone was. It seemed like the situation was de-escalated shortly after the police arrived. Honestly I'm shocked it hasn't hit any of the other local news sources yet.
Woodtv-8 in Grand Rapids reported that someone was shot during an argument. No further info was available.

I'm not sure if it'll make you feel any better, but it happened in the pm, not the am.
It happening under the cover of night and not during broad daylight in one of the most well-traveled areas on campus is slightly less alarming. If it were during the day there would have been a panic.

The context is just really weird, I'm curious about the story behind it.
The police will not always be able to protect you. That's just a fact.
And I'll tell you what. Those who don't want to arm themselves will surely be thankful for those responsible gun owners (millions of them by the way) who do arm themselves and have CC permit or open carry when the sh*t hits the fan.
Should the cops teleport in? I mean, unless a cop happens to be right there to hear the shot, someone has to call in the event to 911, the dispatcher has to contact the cops, and they have to re-route to the location in question. 4 minutes is pretty quick for all that to happen.
Just stating that shootings happen quickly and the police can do nothing about it unless they are actually there.
There is a case to be made for citizens who are properly trained and licensed to carry. There are numerous cases where people stop the bad guys because they have a weapon.

I was just about as close as anyone to the shooting last night and there was nary a sign of any problem beforehand. No yelling, no altercations, no nothing. There was nobody around at all.

Dude, I'm a successful independent technology consultant and am no "leftie".
However, having now seen the excuses for the proliferation of guns now for over five decades I'd say they all fall very flat.
To wit, I lived in Japan for a decade and have a thirty year history with the country. Japan was a very dangerous place dominated by armed fascists (sound familiar?) in the years leading up to and during WWII. The US military spent the bulk of the occupation disarming the country.
The violent crime and death rate is now infinitesimal there...thanks to the US. It is so safe the cops have literally nothing to do.
BTW, Nixon wanted hand guns outlawed and hated the NRA. That ought to be very demonstrative of how far to the right this country has shifted.
And, as it relates to this thread, there would not have been any time for a knight in shining armor or a cop to swoop in and save the day. It happened just like that -- I was there and you weren't -- your dogma falls very flat.

State St. last night and heard the gunshot which came from somewhere around Panera on North U last night. It took the cops about four minutes to get there. By the time I (slowly) walked to the corner of William and State St. I heard someone, presumably a cop, yell "get down and stay down". There were easily 8-10 cop cars there within a few minutes.
There was a WalGreens semi truck double parked on North U making a delivery so it was hard to see exactly what was going on. But I knew it was a gunshot the second I heard it and it was one of decent caliber -- not a pea shooter.
actually went past Walgreens on State St and headed north as if they had the location wrong. It definitely took a 3-4 minutes for cop cars to get there. I was only about 100 yards or so from the action. walking on the sidewalk just north of Mason Hall, at the time of the shot.
My best estimate would have the shooting as having happened on the sidewalk in front ot the bagel shop on North U but my view was blocked by the double-parked Walgreens semi. There was no activity at all around there for a few minutes after the shooting -- I stopped and gawked for a bit but moved on as there was initially no indication anything was wrong. It wasn't until I had crossed State St. that the cops started showing up.
It was strange as it was a very slow night with a paucity of people out on the streets. I'm curious to know what was behind the shooting. I read in the comments section on M Live that the driver of the semi was the victim.

I couldn't see from my vantage point if any cars were blocked in but it appeared the truck was in the right turn lane and not up against the curb. The truck driver could have pulled up in front of Panera -- there were no cars parked in fron of it.
Crazy that the guy will go to jail for attempted murder over this.
