He had his collar yanked from the back and his head whiplashed. I hate Crosby as much as anybody, but this 'spitting' nonsense has been two days of pure dumb.

I can't help you. You think the guy he spat at would maybe react? Or the official standing right there? This all stems from a creative GIF made by a Caps fan immediately after the scrum where they clipped just the forward head motion and omitted the jersey tug. I figured this would die down once people saw the full video, but I once again overestimated the common sense of the internet.

same people who think Tom Wilson shouldn't have been suspended for breaking a players jaw and leaving the player concussed. internet people will support what ever team/agenda they believe in.

The video the NHL put out in explaining this suspension was quite insightful. There were a couple things I hadn't noticed about the hit the first several times watching it.

Primarily, 1) Wilson was coming off the ice for a line change and clearly altered his course to go after a player, but moreso, 2) His natural progression would have been Wilson's right shoulder  hitting Aston Reese's left shoulder with both player's heads out of the way. But by Wilson changing his course and delivering the hit with the left shoulder, he crossed the plane and brought the head into position to be the principle point of contact.

I thought he deserved 2-3 playoff games but figured it'd be only 1.

exactly. He turned away from the bench, leading his left shoulder directly into the players jaw. This was not a hockey play. he was going for the big hit, driving up through towards the head. Guy is a piece of trash on skates similar to guys like Marchand, Cooke and Avery.

The Penguins player had Beagle beat and Wilson made a smart hockey play to delay the puck getting into the zone rather than just going to the bench, to not do so would have been a horrible hockey play. Had he not changed shoulders he would have absolutely put him into the boards/bench and probably the corner of where the glass starts, this would have been a far more dangerous hit. The NHL applies it’s rules inconsistently, they have often not penalized such a hit citing th difference in height, which makes contact to the head hard to avoid. Wilson is 4 inches taller and 20 pounds heavier. The penalty seems excessive at the least.

you are REACHING on the reasoning for why he went with his left shoulder instead of right. And the fact you think in the moment he was concerned for his safety is laughable... the guy left his feet to finish the check. He was trying to bury him.

I wish there were more heavy hits because there is absolutely room for it in the game but we keep getting guys leaving their feet, idiotic fucking lacrosse crosschecks and head hunting. And if it is not that it is sweeping sticks avoiding contact. Dont get me wrong I still love the game and think it has greatly improved in some areas but the loss of the clean open ice hockey hits is noticeable every time I watch a game.

and people saying it wasn't either are Pittsburg fans or don't understand the game. His game is physical and he is there to deliver hits and open up ice for his teammates.  There was nothing cheap about the hit as you stated he's a bigger man and that lead to the contact catching the jaw. I thought the penalty was excessive. Since there was an injury I can understand a game suspension, but in the second round of the playoffs giving him 3 games is too much.

For the record I am not a fan of either team, just a hockey fan at this point of the season as my team was eliminated in the first round. But, love watching the Stanley Cup playoffs.

I know youll never see this but calling out people who think the hit was dirty as uneducated hockey fans is weak.

He left his skates. As a hockey guy in 2018 you should know this is a no-no at all levels. You want to debate whether he left his feet was intentional or not, fine. But him leaving his feet by itself is all that was needed to start a dirty or clean debate.

So what they're sayig is you can't change your mind and continue to play hockey? Stupid reasoning. Yeah he altred his course to deliever a check, last time I checked thats legal in hockey. It's a contact sport. The Pens player should know skating through the neutral zone with your head in your skates is a good way to get hit into next month, It was a good check legal hit. No suspension period. If you don't wanna be hit i suggest you take up golf which if the Pens continue playing like they did, they will.

Tom wilson should be suspened, though for 2 games not 3 and the fact that there was an injury shouldn't impact the suspension length. A million different things can impact an injury but since this is the same league where drawing blood doubles the penalty time for the exact same action it isn't surprising.

Yabadabablue

he has had two borderline hits this playoffs and has been suspended twice earlier this year. I think the 3 games was essentially the league getting as close they could to a series suspention while still being reasonable.

Someone grabbing the back of your jersey doesn't cause your head to snap forward or your lips to purse.

Kuznetsov does react and starts moving towards crosby if spit doesn't hit the ref it doesn't take that much to miss it plus the refs get immediatley distracted by Ovechkin and the pitt guy going at it. He obviously didn't hit kuznetsov but if he wasn't intentionally spitting Crosby must be a hell of a say it don't spray it talker that has spittle flying on people when he talks.

I also can't help the same people who think Crosby is dumb enough to do that in that moment.  He's not going to spit in someone's face during a scrum.  I hate him and the Pens with a passion, but he's not Marchand.

It doesn't even say or prove he did. Get over your hatred. And if he did...who gives a shit, this series has been crazy, at least he's not headhunting like it's 1996 and literally trying to kill people.

PEMBLUE

everyone gets their collared pulled, and it wasn't even that hard.  he is clearly intentionally spitting. If you are going to play edgy or dirty, at least face the consequences.  he knows he will never have to fight, which makes it even worse.

atleast she didn't sever someone's finger tip again and get away with it again. i don't know if he spit or not, but he's a bitch. best player in the world, but he's a bitch.

look, i hate Crosby the most of any player ever. he truly is numero uno on my mt Rushmore of hated players. he may be passing the torch and all, but it's still his league. until someone else wins, it's still crosby's. yes mcdavid is coming, and will be the best in the world. but there is such a huge amount of young talent in the nhl, i can't wait to see it grow. the nhl is in a good place talent wise.

For the team he has around him and where he is in his career, years wise, I’m gonna with with Conor McDavid. McDavid doesn’t have anyone in the same stratosphere as Malkin, like Crosby does which takes some heat off of him in terms of matchups. And also, while I think Crosby is the better player, Malkin is more important to the Pens as is evident when either of them is out of the lineup.

Since Jake Guentzel (I'll wait for some people to google him) entered the league, he's averaged more points per game in the playoffs than any other player.  He conveniently also plays on a line with Crosby.  That alone is telling.  Crosby is still #1 hands down, as disgusting as it is to say.  No one else is capable of making someone else who is mostly unheard of become the top of that leaderboard.

bamf16

May 3rd, 2018 at 12:59 PM ^

Seriously? Because Crosby produced at even higher levels before Guentzel joined the club partway through last season.

On Mario Lemieux's wing at one point was Rob Brown, who scored 49 goals in a season. His next highest after leaving Pittsburgh was 16. Notice how no one argues that Rob Brown be given credit for Lemieux's success?

And because of hockey analytics, we're able to see Guentzel's numbers with and without Crosby on the ice with him at even strength.

Not only does Guentzel's production slide, but he's a negative player in shots for/against.

Trebor

May 3rd, 2018 at 2:02 PM ^

So, because Guentzel plays well with Crosby, that means Crosby is the best player on the planet? The kid was still a 3rd round pick, it's not like he's some dude who joined out of the beer leagues.

If we're going to advanced stats, McDavid's WAR/82 this past season was 7.34. The next highest skater in the league was William Karlsson at 5.73. The next highest player on Edmonton's entire roster was Cam Talbot at 1.82. For comparison, Pittsbugh had four players over 2.5, led by Crosby's 3.36. Edmonton has four players over 0.5, Pittsburgh has 14. Their teams aren't even remotely comparable - Edmonton is a reasonably competitive AHL team without McDavid on the ice. Pittsburgh is a playoff team without Crosby.

Last year Connor Sheary played on a line with Crosby for a good portion of the season. He ended up with 53 points in 61 games. This year he got bumped down to the third line and finished with 30 points in 79 games. Each player has worked hard to get to where they're at, but if you don't think Crosby is the one elevating everyone else's play you're being a loony. :)
