Marty Smith Was on The First team this morning...

Submitted by TdK71 on

And he gave a very down to earth and earnest assesment of the Team's trip to France. The Normandy portion was the center of his report, and he talked about all the good it would bring these young men in the future after football and in life.

If You have a SiriusXM subscription you can download the podcast and listen to it for yourself.

Personally I though it was very well done and Paints the Coach ahd team in a positive light.

He also says the time to win is now, but isn't that always the case?

Yes it's always the case, but now we have Shea and this is the first case of that. Point being... this is the best opportunity we have had to win NOW in a while.

The brotherhood that was strengthened by this trip will pay off big time on the field and in life.

Marty called into the morning drive sports talk show Jox and spoke about the trip. Typically this segment is nascar related, but today's segment was entirely devoted to Michigan's trip. Marty highlighted the same points, particularly Normandy, but heavily expressed the benefits these men get from these trips. He was heavily in favor of Harbaugh/Michigan doing these trips and encouraged others to follow suit. The 2 hosts, who are bama homers, admitted they initially thought negatively of the trips, but have sinced changed their stance and agreed these trips are educational and beneficial to those invovled.

Listened to it on the way to work this morning, excellent segment.  Smith sounds like he's getting choked up just retelling the experience.  I love that show and listen to it almost every morning but Zarzour's hate for Harbaugh is super annoying.  Thankfully McElroy is really level headed with his assessment and expecatations for Harbaugh and Michigan.

his histrionic early displays played over and over on ESPN and came away with superficial--and negative--impressions. Those of us watching intently knew there was plenty more. And let's face it: Michigan's a liberal place, he's a person who--rightly--questions everything and bucks trends. But there's time to rectify first impressions, and to win.

The same people who knock Harbaugh and his odd manner are the ones who will complain about people like Belichik for being monotone and bland. They just need to find something to pick at and bitch about and are, for the most part, watchers not doers. Come to think of it, I just described Jim Rome.

Sorry, that's incorrect.  (EDIT: Well, you did say "Because he's at Michigan" and I agree with that)

This fan base mocked Urban Meyer for faking a heart attack and talked big shit about him the same way OSU fans do about Harbaugh. Only we had to shut up when he started ripping off undefeated seasons.

We mocked "Field Goal" James Franklin and "Arm Punt" McSorley until they beat the piss out of us last year and we had to shut up.

We mocked Dantonio and MSU with endless 3-9 bullshit until the monsoon game. Now we get to shut up.

We still mock everybody else in the conference. We still mock Scott Frost for something his mom said 20 years ago and for something he said after we beat his UCF team two years ago despite Central Florida having zero affect on our lives. This fan base will still mock him until the Cornhuskers whoop our ass.

People mock Harbaugh because that's what college sports is for the bottom half of any fan base - A constant green light to act like a douchebag and take unnecessary shots at other schools and programs, with or without merit. It will continue until Michigan kicks their ass. It has nothing to do with him personally.

For the record, Meyer's "medical issues" were by design.   He got word the OSU job was to become available, a full year in advance.... and he knew he couldn't pull a RichRod and dump Florida mid-contract for OSU... so he left EARLY claiming health problems....    was brilliant....  he got NO heat for any of it, unlike RR.  And he landed his dream job.   brilliant maneuver.

Didn't he first plan to resign at the end of the '09 season for "health reasons", but ended up coming back to coach the '10 season before resigning (for good) again at the end of that regular seaons? I though we all asssumed it was the whole cheating with a coed thing..... Maybe I don't remember it correctly, but I never assumed he had insider information about the Tattoo/Tressel debacle.

MOST of what you say. I will say though...do you think it's only the bottom half of fans? I may be wrong, but I don't hear media types affiliated with the Big Ten network talking about how much an SEC coach doesn't win or is "overrated."  Matter of fact, I don't know if I've ever heard a college football coach referred to as overrated...since Charlie Weis.  And certainly not to this extent.   I've never seen anyone like a Finebaum or any "national" analyst harp on any one coach the way the Harbaugh has been talked about.  Usually that type of thing is reserved for local radio.

 -- one upvote in spirit.

Like others who went to high school in Michigan, I have good friends who went to the other school and despise us for our better-than-thou attitides.  And these are good people not predisposed to whining about things.

Part of the brain says we should care about this, and tone down the arrogant a$$hole persona.

Nah.  Keep it on.  Celebrate with class, but celebrate with CRUELTY.  Go Blue and long live the Harbaugh years!

I listen to the first team every morning and zarzhour never bashes harbaugh that I've noticed..

He thinks the Notre dame game is the biggest game of the opening weekend and if we win that game we are starting 7-0.

Mccelroy I cannot stand listening to him because he tries to break down Michigan's talent and it is brutal..

He discussed this morning how ole miss had far better talent than anything Michigan has even remotely on our roster at WR

Well said jonny - I heard it too this morning and it was outstanding.  Marty Smith was quite moved by the experience.

Zarzour for the life of me is in his own world when it comes to Harbaugh.  He has alone put him on the hot seat and thinks we will be ready to run Harbaugh out of town if we lose to ND.  He is very quick to base everything on last years record and finish down the stretch.  He has quickly forgotten the prior two 10 win seasons and the ridiculous losses on the punt and the spot.  And I like Zarzour, but this Harbaugh thing makes me want to reach thru the radio and just shake him.

So wait ... this guy was saying these trips are more than shameless PR stunts and that Harbaugh is using them to teach his players important lessons about life and history? Don't let ol' Jugears hear about that.

Saw a lot of Southern Twitter ire directed towards the Paris trip in the early days; it seems the visit to Normandy and all that place stands for brought around many of the "berrets won't win u gamez!!!" SEC/OSU crowd.

The totally genuine (and all Harbaugh) decision to spend time learning about and celebrating American heroism/WWII history just seems to connect with more people than the study abroad/cultural exposure piece.

I'm impressed with each piece of the two trips and how well-rounded these experience are. Every school that can, should.
