Michigan in France
Sounds like a really great trip and something on my bucket list to see Normandy. Didn't know this before but Coach Beilein is the nephew of one of the Niland brothers KIA. For those who don't know Saving Private Ryan was about the Niland brothers.
Building some solid memories non football related. Can believe other schools aren't doing this for their football teams. The amount if revenue generated easily pays for a trip like this.

I think it’s telling that other teams don’t do something like this.
Damn, the opening scene to that movie is so compelling. It makes me emotional. France should be ever indebted to the US.
we're all square.

...except it seems that we already lost it. Someone should really do a better job keeping the grass down out there before the neighborhood association complains.

Is a sapling considered a shrubbery?
Nii, er i mean No
If I remember correctly, John's mother - Josephine Niland - is a cousin to the Niland brothers portrayed in the film. I seem to recall and article in the Ann Arbor News about a year or two ago about this. Very interesting indeed.
yes it's been posted here at least 3 times over the last 5 years but people always seem to be new to the story.
The things that get constantly rehashed on this blog, I’m ok with this being repeated 3 times every five years. I actually had no idea they were related and I’m on the blog every day.

I am new to the story. And the previous 3 postings.
April 29th, 2018 at 11:43 PM ^
Me too and I am on here a lot.
Well, I guess if you can't pick up something posted 3 whole times in 5 years from the 10,000 other things posted, what good are you?
Go to Normandy and you'll see they share the same sentiment.
That debt was prepaid.
I always thought Benjamin “The Ghost” Martin was the reason. Damn.
Check out the circumstances surrounding the quote: "Retreat, hell, we just got here".
https://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stories/retreat-hell-just-got/
that we never should have gotten involved in.
Hindsight is always 20/20
Should never have been started, I'm with you. Once it got going however, the U.S. getting involved was overdue.

ALL wars are criminally stupid
So you are a fan or Ron Paul? Cool beans. No qualms here.
Not really. Germany hadn't taken much French territory when America joined and was already near the breaking point, though so was France. America's involvement just sealed it.
The Revolution. We lost over 100k soldiers driving Germany out of France. World War 2 and World War 1 losses by our country vs what France lost in our revolution would be like comparing Jupiter in size to dwarf planets moons biggest crator.
Comparing modern war with that of the 18th century doesn’t make any sense.
the colonies that were critical.
...of those American casualties in WW1 were lost in a battle against the flu.

Even if the old "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing vis-a-vis England was a huge factor, it is true that the fledgling USA would not have come to be without a major assist from France.
April 30th, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
It's true that without France's help the American Revolution would have likely failed, though it is also a classic case of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend."
understand much about history, hence the dumb comments. You are very correct France is a huge reason we are even a country today and are actually a great allie today.
And Britain, and Canada. More than half the troops in the first landings, and over two-thirds of the naval and air forces, were British (or Canadian).
Normandy is one of the most powerful places on Earth and one of the few places I've ever been that will stay with me forever.
It is so cool that this team gets to experience that together.
Should be life changing for some of these kids to see what there Grand Fathers went thru. Thank you
Grand fathers. Their Grandparents are probably only in their 60's and 70's. Time flies.

Good stuff +1
Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, the clips posted by Chris Balas have way too much wind interference that distorts the audio. Someone needs to buy him a wind muff for his microphone. The clips posted by The Michigan Insider have much better audio.
he's probably using his phone, not a microphone like that.
...of how much it would have improved the audio, I have to point out that my Malinois wouldn't take more than five seconds to murder that thing.
Hearing Ben St Juste speak French live on sports center was pretty cool. That and DPJ dancing
In all of cinema
too bad it all went downhill from there
France is a failed country but damn does it have beautifal countryside. Can see why harbaugh went there
MOD REPLY: Don't be a dickswab. - LSA
I hear what you're saying but let us enjoy one thread without going down this road. I'm living through the team vicariously.
Nothing screams “failed state” like having one of the world’s highest standards of living, one of the best health systems in the world and five weeks of guaranteed vacation time for all workers.
They do go on strike a lot though, the jerks.
April 29th, 2018 at 11:00 PM ^
And you didn't even mention the pastries.
If you define France as a failed country, what the hell is the US then? A ruinous cesspool? A collapsed outhouse? A country of even greater failures on every discernible front?
and attracts far more immigrants. Yet you somehow can say the US is worse than France in “every discernible way”. Responding to dumb statements with equally dumb statements is not a wise course of action.
