What? Mo Hurst did not go in the first round of the NFL draft, which is now #1 on my list of WTF NFL draft moments in the I-look-at-everything-in-detail era:
- Hurst.
- Jonas Mouton, constantly out of position looks-like-Tarzan dude, goes in the second round.
- Alan Branch falls into the second round behind three DT jabronis.
- Lamarr Woodley also falls into the second round of that draft.
- David Harris, same thing, same draft.
Ernest Shazor dropping out entirely was a twitter suggestion but Shazor checked out immediately after ending that Purdue receiver and reportedly had some off-field issues. The most absurd thing from Michigan's end was Ryan Mundy transferring to WVU and then getting drafted.
I reserve the right to revise this opinion if it turns out that Hurst's heart condition is more severe than people are letting on. Todd McShay did assert he would plummet because of it before yesterday's first round.
This is not a true thing. Don Brown is not a sitcom dad. And only a sitcom dad would do this.

Don Brown did not pour 30 dollars worth of espresso in a cup and slam it with one gulp and then almost die. He is a highly competent leader of men. This isn't I Love Lucy.

I'll take a carton of Cartons. 247 basketball analyst guy Brian Snow has issued a Michigan prediction for "soon to be five star"(!) IA PG DJ Carton based on a bunch of people's assertions about Carton's recruitment. Pick sounds somewhat speculative—it's a number of people with low-confidence opinions, not one or two with a high-confidence one—but it's still a situation where Michigan is recruiting against the rest of the Big Ten instead of one-and-done powerhouses that they're batting 0.100 against. (McGary.) There are no regional offers left to get, and he's been everywhere already:
He’s also a step ahead of most of his classmates in his recruiting process. That’s due in large part to a busy visit scheduled his family has managed for him over the past year.
“I have been to Creighton, Michigan, Ohio State, Illinois, Iowa, Marquette, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Missouri, Indiana, that’s all I can think of right now.” Carton said in Texas.
Michigan is in a good place, as Carton is currently Recruit Who Asserts He Has No Future Visits Set Up Except This One School:
Another trip to Indiana is under serious consideration per his father and another Big Ten campus trip seems likely as well.
“I don’t have any scheduled right now but I did talk to (Michigan) coach (John) Beilein and he is wanting me to come to campus as soon as possible,” Carton said. “My family and I are going to probably scheduled that one soon.”
As a bonus, Sam agrees and also asserts that 5-star TX SF Jalen Wilson is highly realistic. He's taking an unofficial in two weeks and… uh… commit watch maybe? Probably not. But maybe? And then we shoot Boeheim if he looks even a little squirrelly?

Are you going to look at the "Chris Balas: Patterson" thread from yesterday? It went downhill starting with the first comment.
Branch, Woodley, and Harris all dropped, and were all terrific NFL players. Harris once had the second-best defensive PFF grade in the entire league, behind only his teammate Darrelle Revis, in the year that Revis set the best score PFF ever recorded. I believe Harris was also one of their top grades ever that season, but I've never been able to find the link where I saw that.
Hurst's problem doesn't have to be the end of the world to jeopardize draft position. Any possibility that he could turn out unable to play some year hurts draft stock, because teams don't want to invest in a guy that could abruptly retire after two years or something.
But that's less of an issue in second-and-third day rounds where having a player with talent not work out is more acceptable both inside the front office and amongst the fanbase.
Everyone's looking at his weight and wringing their hands about how he'll hold up against double teams, as if teams hadn't tried to double him only to watch him land in the QB's lap anyway.
The NFL draft isn't an assessment; it's more like a wildly speculative market, completely unregulated, where bets are really about the wildest upsides. For that matter, I think NFL teams are publicly selling Hurst short in the hopes of sniping him with a relatively cheap pick. It's more a political move than any statement about his ability.
FWIW, here's what scouts told former Packers beat reporter (and UM alum) Bob McGinn about Hurst, who he rated the #4 D lineman (after Vea, Payne, and Bryan).

MAURICE HURST, Michigan (6-1 ½, 291, 4.98, 1-2): Played extensive from 2014-’16 but didn’t become a starter until his senior season. “He’s more of the prototypical 3-technique than anybody in the draft,” one scout said. “Everybody wants that length at that inside position but I look at the Pro Bowl every year and everybody that gets voted to it is 6-1 or less. He’s a lot like Aaron Donald. Only thing where they’re not alike is Donald can just jolt your shoulders over your heels and rock you right back into the quarterback. I haven’t seen that quality in this guy. His plays were made on quickness.” Finished with 132 tackles (32 ½ for loss) and 12 ½ sacks. “He’s just got to fit your system,” a second scout said. “He has to continue playing hard. He’s a quick penetrator. He’ll get hammered if he plays two gaps.” Arms just 32, hands only 9 ½. Wonderlic of 26. “What you’ve got is a very small man,” a third scout said. “He’s not like Warren Sapp or Tommie Harris, any of those super 3-techniques. I just don’t see it. He’s a good rotational player.” Prevented from working out at the combine when doctors discovered an irregularity with his heart. Later was cleared by doctors and worked out fully at pro day. I have always wondered why Shazor did not get drafted, I am not the biggest interwebs sleuth, but I still don't understand why. He had all the measurables, and I enjoyed watching him play a lot when we weren't playing against Vince Young.
He was a big hitter who made some big plays. He got overrated by fans and media for that.
Too often his tackling was sloppy. He was like a HR hitter who is always swinging for the fences, looked great when he connected. I don't remember being impressed by his speed either.
He had great size and highlights. A lot of untapped potential. He's one of those players you wish had Don Brown as a coach.
I just remember CBS-Sportsline at the time had a 2nd round grade on Shazor in their draft tracker, so it was very confusing watching no one draft him at all..
At first I thought this was referencing Shazier. Oh my that was heartbreaking to see Ryan Shazier at the draft last night. I hadn't heard much since his injury but that looks like a permanent condition. God bless that dude.
That was a bit uncomfortable to watch. I never knew how his health was after that injury. They would show him at games sitting in the booth and I assumed he was much further along to getting back to playing than what he truly is. I just hope he can continue to improve and walk normally.

He'll show up with a slightly different haircut, opposing coaches and players will protest that this is obviously DJ Wilson, and everyone associated with Michigan will just stare at them blankly, and insist we see no resemblance whatsoever.

...so he couldn't stay with or track down NFL level talent. Still:
- his name comes up b/c he has an all-time great name. Ernest Shazor just sounds like a safety or linebacker who punishes people.
- I just went back and watched that hit against Purdue (viva YouTube). I think there's a good chance that a penalty would be called on that play today. Shazor's helmet clearly make contact and smacks the Purdue receiver in the strenum / upper shoulder. Even though it's not helmet-to-helmet, and there's the added degree of difficult that the receiver was just tripped and was turning through the air, I wonder if they would have penalized him for leading with the helmet if that play happened in 2018.

C'mon, the consensus opinion of the MGoBlogerati is that Hurst is too small, doesn't have the requisite upper body strength, and has maxed out his physical capabilities to warrant a first-round selection.

I mean this - apparently it was known to the program and to Hurst that he had a heart condition since his freshman year, but we were all shocked to hear about this at the NFL combine.
As were 100% of the teams at the NFL combine - which at last count were all of them.
Might his stock have been improved (or not fallen as much) if it were a bit of public knowlege he was playing with this? I realize there are student medical confidentiality laws in play and Hurst would have had to sign off on this approach - but I'm thinking if the NFL knew about this for three years, he wouldn't have dropped.
Personally, I doubt that all 32 teams have the proper guys on staff to assess this condition without an in person exam. Sure, by now all NFL teams can assess repaired ACL joints, labrums, cervical conditions - the stuff they see every day - but how many of them have expert cardiologists around?
Point being - would it have perhaps been better if everyone knew of this condition all along?

Jonas Mouton looked like Tarzan? How did I miss that one? Maybe that was more of the general consensus that he was a highly ranked recruit out of CA, rather than an actual statement on him being like jacked and strong and stuff? He never came accross as a large, muscular, intimidating guy at least from my perspective watching him as a fan. His NFL Combine weaknesses were noted as " does not possess enough bulk or strength".
So I asked the waiter where the bathroom was and the dude just looks at me. So I says it again real loud 'cause, you know, I gotta go! Next thing I know I'm upstairs pissin' in a tub.

Mo Hurst's heart condition is a lot worse than many thought it is. Apparently if he decides to fix the heart condition, his career is over. He can play without fixing it but that's a long term risk that he could die playing football.
He might not be drafted if his medical is that bad.
I trust Michigan and Harvard doctors more than the online rumor mill.

with NFL connections saying on Twitter saying that Mo Hurst could go undrafted due to heart condition. Broaddus used to work in the NFL and has numerous NFL connections with the Cowboys, Eagles, Jaguars, etc.

and has been playing high school and college football at a high level for years. I've heard nothing of this "word" you speak of. Just because he doesn't go in the first round doesn't mean he's not gonna get drafted
as long as team doctors clear him. Michigan/Harvard doctors means nothing to the NFL teams
