New offseason, new moderator sticky.

--------------------------------------

What this thread is for: It's an ad-hoc way of tracking what threads and comments get removed. Mods that remove a thread should post the title here with a brief reason as to why the thread is gone.

Don't comment in this thread unless you have to: if you leave an irrelevant comment in this thread it will be deleted (see: "cumbrously long").

--------------------------------------

Things we moderate a lot:

  1. Politics. Don’t you get enough of this everywhere else?
  2. Noise/snowflakes. We ask our moderators to try really hard not to censor ideas but some ideas are so tiresome and retread and badly argued that they’re not worth keeping around. If you’re getting a substantial amount of downvotes we’ll look to see if you’re posting an unpopular opinion that you can support. If you can’t support it politely and rationally, or if you don’t acknowledge the holes in your argument, it’s noise.
  3. Useless content from other sites. Clickbait is annoying. 247, WTKA always get the benefit of the doubt.
  4. The Drew Sharp Memorial Don’t Feed the Professional Trolls Rule. Pete Finebaum has taken the place of the late Sharp. Valenti and Chatsports are the other two on the ban list. Bleacher Report is off the list but still under close observation.
  5. Bewbs and general misogyny/objectifying of women. We tried one year of this and our female readership shot up after being really low. This means it’s a good rule: however much you enjoy cutting loose with the guys, we have tens of thousands of readers it drives away.

Hall of Stickies Past:

The first, the second, the third. the fourth. The fifth. The sixth. The seventh.

What's it gonna take to ban the OP here?  https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/ohio-state-trolls-winovich

His posting history reveals an obvious OSU troll.

Deleted comment by PurpleBeaverEater in the Trevor Keegan post on the board. Comment was inappropriate for a hello post. Account blocked.

Pro tip: when a recruit makes a video/live stream with his family, don’t make lewd comments about the people near him.

Urban Meyer to fly Coach

This thread was fine in that it made fun of another thread that was silly. I removed both.

Seth - On Saturday you said you checked a box that allowed me to earn or lose points. That seems to be working so thanks for that, but I can’t upvote or downvote and I can’t see how other users have voted for me. Is there a chance you can check another box and fix this? Thanks for doing what you do here.

Cleaned up Isaiah Hole thread

Original poster included Yoder, which is a violation of our "don't even accidentally promote Ace Williams" policy. Because I can't be sure if it was a mistake or Yoder put him up to it, the account was banned with no appeal.

Hi mgowill,

I just created a new account and was formerly the PurpleBeaverEater account holder. Took me a few days and a search on the blog to figure out what had happened to my account. After reading your post and tip, I realize exactly what happened. And you are, obviously, completely right about the comment. It was out of line and inappropriate for the topic, and honestly it would be very embarrassing if Trevor or anyone in his circle were to browse the blog and see that here. As a Michigan alum, I hold myself and all alums to a higher standard than that and can honestly say that it was complete oversight and something that I won’t do again in the future.

That being said, I was wondering if I could possibly have my account unlocked? Or if there is something that I can do to get it unlocked in the future? I understand that maybe this isn’t how it works, but I am hoping that might be something that is cool. Also, idk if there is a better way to get into contact with you guys other than posting here like this, or sending spam email to Seth or Brian through the “contact” tab. I kind of already sent Brian an email or 2 through there without knowing that one of these threads was probably a more appropriate place to raise my questions.

MODS PLEASE BE MORE VIGILANT ABOUT DIARIES

It would have been one thing if this user had posted this advertisement AFTER CHECKING WITH ME as a board thread. He posted it as a diary for higher visibility, has been around more than long enough to know the difference, and didn't run it by anybody first. Board thread I would have removed it and issued a warning. Doing as he did the longtime user lost his account, no appeal.

Now what?

Dropped because it was a snowflake post. Hit up the other dozen recruiting posts for more play time.

Maizen's new profile (Ketchup McPasty). Seth, Brian, someone, if it's at all possible I implore you guys to try and figure out a solution to allow IP banning for guys like this and "His Dudeness." It's been making the board extremely toxic lately.

Mods: the new troll account Kethup McPasty has all the signs of being the same asshole as the Franklin Hatchett account which was deep-sixed a few months ago: a fake persona using tired identity clichés in a vain attempt to convey persona legitimacy.

Please nuke it. Thanks, D

Agree with Don. The Appreciation thread for recruiting team was not only hijacked, but he turned it negative.

Most of us are on other message boards and if there's one rule I like on others, its the strict Appreciation thread rule of 'if you don't have anything good to say, move on.  Don't post here.'

If someone posts an appreciation thread for Dave Brandon, one hopes there would be no replies as an example or 'I appreciate that he left', but start another thread if you want to bash the subject of the thread.

just my 2 cents

That Tennessee fan that got banned earlier is probably back - if not with multiple accounts. They're in the Crouch thread.

I see the Mods have been extra busy this week... if it isn't asking too much, is there any way to tell if the slew of accounts created on 12/21 (and one at 3 am today) are the same person? It seems weird that a Tennessee fan would suddenly become that obsessed with trolling the board. I would guess it's more likely someone from either MSU or OSU.. and the childish attack style seems oddly familiar.  Then again anything's possible.

For security reasons we don't have that feature (mod powers are actually pretty limited because that's an easy gateway).

The new members feed is a tab I keep open and have to flush daily. You can tell pretty easily which are spambots, which are trolls, and which are actual new users.

I would like my account reinstated as I was banned for being accused of being Maizen. If you looka at my posting history its clearly not true.

Then I just made a nonsense name, Scootertooter, that was banned because I had the audacity to agree with Maizen in a thread where a bunch of people were seriously pretending like Georgia losing their back-up QB was the same thing as Aubrey Solomon transferring. How someone who could have posted positive threads after the Notre Dame game and the Ohio State game could be confused with Maizen is beyond me, but hey, you do you mgowill. Modding is an emotional game.

In a single thread because anyone who agrees with Maizen gets accused of being Maizen.

I posted three threads that I created this past season in my response to you that would make it pretty clear to anyone who frequents the board that I am not Maizen. Does he seem like the type who would look for silver linings after the Ohio State and Notre Dame games?

Edit:

Here is the thread.

If you want to say I could have held off on a few replies, sure fine. But claiming I'm Maizen because I agreed with him in this thread and was arguing with people over a legit point (that the Fields transfer is different than the Solomon transfer) is overly harsh.

I have restored your account. One of the things that gets difficult in moderating is when someone is arguing a point and when they cross the line into trolling.

So I would agree with your statement about emotion, because in that thread you were emotional and telling people they just didn’t get your point and then it got to name calling. In the future I would suggest just letting it go might be a good idea. Make your point, back it up, and let the audience decide or argue for themself. The problem I have with people getting riled up and bitching in a thread about a player, is that the players do read this stuff - not all of them - but it is reason for caution.

Appreciate it.

Also, I will definitely do my best to avoid the argumentative, repetitive responses in the future. Generally, my rule of thumb is once its off the main page, let it go. Unfortunately, it was a particularly boring night and I found the tone of many of the people responding that I disagreed with exasperating to say the least.

I know modding is a tough job and thank you for doing it. Its probably better for board quality to have a heavy hand when it comes to banning and blocking.

The JBB thread right now is a good example. There would soon be three pages of the same responses, some with more vitriol than others. Every few minutes a new comment is added but when they get that large, you don’t know where the new comment was made. I locked the thread because I think that thread will only go south from where it currently is.
