Notre Dame Spring Game: analysis from M n B, video
Analysis of todays Notre Dame Spring Game from Trevor Woods of Maize N Brew. Not a lot of weight can be put into Spring Games. But a little can be derived. For example: it was evident why Brandon Wimbush is the starting QB.
7 minute video: https://www.facebook.com/maizenbrewsbn/videos/10155450814210994/
The analysis was much better than that sport coat and green undershirt combo.
Soft defense and Wimbush will definitely start at quarterback. Well that makes me feel good.
Wimbush looked good against their D? Shea will hang 42.
Posting to lock in these bold predictions. Hope you’re right!
Being a bit hyperbolic here to point out that Wimbush is garbage. My prediction has been 31-17, assuming Shea is eligible.
Do you think we win without Shea?
It'd be closer, but I'd still give us the edge. Think that's a moot point though. We will have the better QB on the field, whether that's Shea or Brandon. Their offense is just going to struggle.
Appreciate the insight. I’ll admit I know nothing about ND since we haven’t played them in awhile. Really hope you’re right on this one!

But sometimes homer glasses hinder our vision.
Is it because Shea can run around a bit? Maybe flesh out the prediction a bit more.
I don't know why ND's D is good, but if it's because of a great DL, I'd be very concerned.

DL is good not great. Their DTs are very good, their returning DE Daelin Hayes is okay and they have to replace their other DE Jay Hayes, probably with Khalid Kareem, a first year starter.
LB Tranquill is good, they like LB Coney a lot, they have to replace a good MLB in Nyles Morgan.
They have good not great corners.
Their safeties are a mess.
I'd expect us to use the TEs and work to get DPJ shots on the safeties, then I think we will be able to run the ball well as the game moves on since their D will get tired from being on the field so much. It will certainly be a game where Shea and the defense have to play well early, but if they have to play from behind we will be able to pull away.

Do you think we’ll see DPJ in the slot more this game in order to get matched up with a safety? Saw somewhere that if Nico keeps progressing he can play outside with Black and move DPJ in the slot

Would certainly expect some motion into the slot for DPJ. I don't think Collins would supplant DPJ on the outside, DPJ is too good for that, we want him taking on their best corners. I think you could see some packages with Black, DPJ, and Collins all on the field and DPJ in the slot in that scenario.
We will certainly be able to create some poor matchups for them in the passing game. Outside of their best corner they have limited coverage ability. It'll probably be a game where they try to take away one option (Black?) and Gentry, DPJ, others have a lot of good looks. Shea just has to hit them and he will.

I don’t expect Collins to supplant DPJ for a starter, but I can see them moving DPJ to the slot when Collins comes in on 3 wide sets to set up a mismatch for DPJ and his speed against a weak safety. However, I am a little worried about the OL holding up long enough for the play to develop and Patterson to have time to get a good throw off. I know his mobility will help extend plays, but I’d like him to be able to step up into his throws, especially the ones downfield

I don't think Shea will be under too much duress. They don't present a ton of organic pass rush - they were 64th in adjusted sack rate last year (we were 2nd, OSU was 19th for reference) - and they are replacing one DE. So I'd expect Shea to have decent time when they're not blitzing and he just has to be able to hit the check down when they do blitz.

Will be handing off to them?

Will who be?
Seeing how well that worked out. You know exactly what I was talking about.
I just know that you were trying to be a smart-ass without bringing much smart to the party.
I wasn't trying to be a smartass at all. But you come here with all your so called football accumen (you lost me at "Shea will hang 42 on them") and act like you didn't know what I was saying. But thanks for adding nothing other than the name calling. That's fine tho, I've been called worse by better.
We just need to know 2 things...where are they and who will be cleaning the green blood up
but it is shaping up to be a day (or night) that we go in there and put college football on notice that we are one of the best teams in the nation.
Don Brown is just going to start a New Orleans Saints-style bounty system. Chick-fil-a for every bone you snap.
I still have bad feelings over what Gregg Williams did to Brett Favre. Minnesota had a very real chance of winning the Super Bowl if not for Gregg Williams ugly approach to the game. Favre would have been recognised as one of the 2 or 3 best QBs ever if Minnesota had won, which is where he should be ranked.
lol okay guy, you seem fun.
You also seem super rational, ranking Brett Favre in the top three QBs of all time. Brady, Montana, Manning, Elway, Staubach, Unitas, Marino, Brees, etc. Ever heard of these guys?
Dirty play is ok?
You left Otto Graham, Sammy Baugh, Fran Tarkenton, and Brett Favre, off of your list.
It's football, what are you gonna do? I only listed quarterbacks that could legitimately be considered top five of all time by a sane, football-savvy individual.
Bleacher Report has Brett Favre at #5. Winning a Super Bowl with 2 differennt teams could have put him in the top 3. :-)

Oh shit, you have convinced me of Brett Favre's greatness. You have defeated me.
What about Otto Graham? You didn't list his name, and said you only listed who sane, and football savvy people would list in their Top 5.
Sure, buddy, Otto Graham. The point is that the NFL all-time leader in interceptions is not even in the same breath.
You need to send out some emails to Athlon and the others I listed telling them how off they are.
I don't waste time worrying about what writers who haven't played the game think. Your obsession with defending Brett Favre's honor is...interesting.
So Otto Graham wasn't a Top 5 either?
You didn't answer my origial question, if dirty play is ok. And you distracted attention away from what I was saying by implying something. I asked you about Otto Graham too. Have you heard of him? Seems you haven't.
Is it possible you could be wrong?
Jon Gruden and John Madden both think Favre is one of the greatest ever.
just a circle jerk. Madden had always kept a hard-on for Favre. Favre is also the subject of multiple most overrated qb of all time lists, even by ESPN. One super bowl win... most interceptions of all time? Eli and Big Ben have 2. Brees might even be better.
Plot twist: It's Always Marcia is John Madden. It all makes sense now.
April 21st, 2018 at 11:34 PM ^
Will you present evidnce that supports your argument against Brett Favre as I have presented evidence in support of Bret Favre?
Or has it all degenerated into personal attacks for you?
April 21st, 2018 at 11:40 PM ^
Dude. Brett Favre can be seduced. I say give it a shot.

Is there any sports value in this comment?

Similar articles on ESPN, CNN, IGN, and more articles on BR. Even a bodybuilding website has an article on whether he was the most overrated PLAYER in NFL history.

What about Jon Gruden?
Many times when someone is feeling thay are losing an argument on the intenet, they resort to personal attacks.
April 21st, 2018 at 10:33 PM ^
Tell me more about this "thay" person. You happened to be correct about the bounty stuff, but got sidetracked by the Favre/Otto Graham stuff. This is one of the strangest MGoArguments I've read, and that's saying something.
April 21st, 2018 at 11:47 PM ^
Thay was a typo

You did see the Dr began the questining of rankings? Then he implied only sane and football savvy people agree with him? It went on from there. I am only replying to his replies to me.
and don't want to know because don't wish to get involved. However, I've seen enough of your posts to realize you are usually on the side of what makes sense, so I'm assuming Favre is the all-time leader in picks and as much fun as he could be to watch, I'm in total agreement he does not even belong in the talk as to top 5.
Joe Montana thinks it's possible Otto Graham is the greatest of all time.
He starts talking about him at 7:03 of this video
