Per UM Basketball twitter account. I expect him to be back (no insider info, just my gut) Just wanted to make title super clear

Not surprising and makes sense. Most places don't even have him as a 2nd but he has 1st round potential. Go through the process, get feedback on what to improve on, come back.

I mean he’s free to test the waters no shame in that he has until May 30th to pull out so why the hell not. With that said he would be crazy to leave he is no where near ready for the nba

In my opinion he should come back and improve his handles and shooting. Next year will be his year. No matter what hope all works out for him.

He brings absolutely no value to any team until he can improve his jumpshot and free throws. He won’t be drafted. Sorry if I sound negative but there’s no place for him in today’s league.

The timing makes sense. If he's an NBA player, it's more than likely this year or next for him. And, as everyone has stated, while he has NBA potential, it doesn't appear high enough to draft now and his skill level also doesn't seem to be high enough to draft this year either. So that basically leaves next year, and the older he gets the more the window closes. He gets one free enter and return. So he might as well use it to get a chance to work on his game and get more feedback on his game.

Being 21 already doesn't give him much room for an NBA dream. He can likely go the Euro route, but the NBA window is very limited, particularly for a guy that almost certainly won't be a lottery pick.

The NCAA does not restrict how many times a player can go that route. The rule was changed two years ago, despite what you might read on the front page here.

Youi gave very valid reasons why it makes sense for Matthews, but why would any player with legitimate NBA ambitions turn down the chance to work out for teams and get feedback? He's talented enough that teams will at least give him a look.

What would happen if a player declared 3 times and withdrew every time? It looks to me like the NCAA would allow him to return to school. What would the NBA do about it? They could draft him, of course. But what if they didn't and a year later he looks worthy of a first round pick? Whatever the NBA did, it's hard to see how the player ends up worse off if he didn't like his draft grade.

Obviously this hasn't been tested yet, as the rule change was only made two years ago. Also, the NBA rule was written before then, so it wasn't done with college players in mind. They are discussing changing eligibility rules and that's something they may address.

His shortcomings that prevent him from being an NBA player seem pretty obvious (shooting, ball-handling), but perhaps hearing that from the NBA will help him develop the skills next season so that he may be ready.  I am looking forward to seeing him reach more of his potential next year.

I forget his exact words but Wagner said it had a big influence on his basketball career. Never hurts to get as much info as possible and you can't get it without doing yourself. Hope he comes back, 100% selfishly.

You know that Warren never played a down in the NFL and that Morris played in the NBA for parts of four separate seasons and has career earnings north of $3M, right? They don't belong in the same sentence.

he comes back, great.  If he is told he will get drafted now and goes, the Beilein NBA pipeline continues.  Our basketball program is in great shape either way.

I didn’t know there were so many nba scouts on this blog. Let the man follow his dream and wish him the best. If he comes back great. He doesn’t owe any of us anything.

I think this is good for Matthews AND our coaching staff. They can learn what the NBA thinks he needs to work on. I think he’ll be back too but it’s a good thing for us a program.

Very smart choice. Why not at least get some feedback from the league on where your game needs to improve?

I'd guess he'll be back but this way he knows exactly what he needs to improve on next season so he can get himself drafted this time next year. He really started to come along during the postseason, so if he can keep that momentum going into next season he can definitely play his way into the first round. This can be his team next year if he keeps making progressions.

He should be back, barring a first round grade with some winks from a handful of teams at the end of the round. And if that's the case, it's a solid one to argue for leaving - guaranteed contract and typically a stable franchise is picking in the 20s.

Can’t he only do this once in his college career tho? And he has 2 seasons of eligibility left? Idk too much about basketball and the transition from College to Pro ball, but seems to me that he has enough obvious areas that need work that this would almost be a waste...Clearly he has to improve his shot and take care of the ball more, and could do well to keep his head up when attacking the rim and look to dish more than simply putting his head down and committing to the drive. Can someone explain to me if I have this whole process incorrect?

He would be crazy not to do this!  Get some feedback, etc etc. but he'll be back.  (everyone in this thread will say feining confidence, but nervously be hoping they are correct)

Here is the only thing about declaring...he possibly could go to the draft camp, test great in the measurables portion, have the best shooting day of his life and possibly clamp up a higher rated prospect thus making his stock grow. I think he comes back, but I do not think it is a slam dunk...all it takes is one team to fall in love with you.
