M jumps to 2nd in latest Directors Cup standings
Michigan jumped up to second after a third place finish in men’s ice hockey.
Stanford remains first, natch. Penn State drops to third, then Ohio State and NC State.
The Big Ten leads all Division I conferences with four institutions in the top-10 – Michigan (2nd), Penn State (3rd), Ohio State (4th) and Wisconsin (9th).

I thought that was weird too, so I checked.
Top 5 in M Swimming and Wrestling. Top 10 in W Cross Country. Sweet 16 in W Basketball. Top 20 in M Cross Country, W Swimming. Top 32 in W Soccer and Volleyball. Some points in other sports, too.
Nothing spectacular, but good enough for fifth, I guess.

According to wikipedia, since UNC won the inaugural Director's Cup in 1993-1994 (Stanford was 2nd), Stanford has won every single time. They're also the only school which has appeared in the top 10 every year since it's inception. (EDIT: per a post below, I guess Florida has also been in the top 10 every year - but Stanford has been top TWO every year).
Michigan's stats:
2nd place: once
3rd place: 3 times
4th place: 5 times
5th/6th place: 3 times each
7th/9th/10th place: 1 time each
Not much better at the other levels.
DII - GVSU has won 12 of the last 14. Only blips were when Grand Canyon won it twice in a row. At least is another "Grand" school, I guess?
DIII - Williams has won all but two years - UCSD in 97-98 and Middlebury in 2011-12.
Williams has been successful even w/o Duncan? Who'd have thunk that.

But look how Stanford wins it every year not to take anything away from the athletes who compete in these Sports but it isn't what most people see as the Big sports and the PAC is not exactly stacked in the big sports

Thats not really true though. We have points won from sports with low participation. Mens hockey is a tiny sport participation wise. This year stanford has more points than us in Football, soccer, womens basketball, mens and womens swimming, track and field, etc. The only "big" sports we beat them in are basketball and maybe wrestling if you consider that a big sport? Stanford does extremely well in pretty much all sports.

The entire point of the Directors Cup is that women's rowing, etc., counts as much as football or men's basketball, so I'm not sure what the grousing about Stanford's non-revenue sports programs is about. Also, while Michigan does have fewer varsity sports than Stanford, Ohio State and a handful of other Div I schools, it still has quite a few relative to many other schools and benefits in the Cup competition by fielding teams in sparsely populated sports, e.g., men's gymnastics, which has only 21 Div I programs.

I give Stanford credit for having overall excellence in their athletics, but when they have at least 9 more varsity sports than every realistic competitor (OSU being the lone exception with one less sport), who else do you think could win every year?
I'm sure if Michigan added fencing, squash and beach volleyball to its list of varsity sports we'd be in a spot to actually compete with Stanford for this award too. Otherwise, the Directors Cup is meaningless.
Just call it the Stanford Cup and let everyone else vie for it.

(1) Stanford scored, U-M didn't: Women's soccer, fencing, women's indoor track & field.
(2) U-M scored, Stanford didn't: Men's basketball, Men's ice hockey.
When I look at that list above --- there's only one case of a sport where Stanford scored and U-M didn't have the sport (fencing). Then again, there's one case the other way (men's ice hockey).
I'm not trying to dog Michigan --- but Stanford deserves credit here. They do earn their annual victories in this competition. They score a lot of their points in sports that MOST schools have. Soccer, women's volleyball, swimming, cross country, track, et cetera.
Yes, Stanford has some structural advantages for drawing athletes in those sports. But we've also seen Northern and Midwestern schools have national success at those sports as well (e.g., Michigan soccer and swimming, PSU volleyball).
It would be tough, but neither is it impossible for someone to beat Stanford here.
Michigan outscored Stanford for 1st place within the winter season alone.
But they had a huge lead from the fall and will likely increase it even more with spring sports.

The scoring system takes your best 19 sports (4 of which are mandatory), so it doesn’t matter if you play more.

Stanford wins every year. It's a given. If you get 2nd place, you're ssentially tops in the nation and that certainly passes the gut check. We've had a nice year athletically

This is wildly off-topic, but since I'm the OP...
Does anyone know why I wouldn't get points for upvotes? When I posted this topic, I had 160. I've since gotten 11 upvotes, and I'm still at 160. (Should go up when I post this comment, of course.)
This has been the case since I started creating Forum topics. Each time I create a topic I get the points for creating it, but no points for the upvotes.
At the risk of sounding like a petty, desperate vote-collecter, anyone know why this might be? I emailed Brian a while back about this, but no response.

hold onto 2nd..we have points out there in Mens & Womans Gym, M & W Tennis, Softball, Water polo and possibly Baseball, LAX and M& W Track not a stretch to maintain 2nd

Texas is not #1 every year. The have a lot of money and a large talent pool.

I'm not dogging Stanford, but we had 2 teams in the final 4 one in the championship, softball a perennial top 10 team swimming and diving ranked high every year gymnastics highly ranked. Sports like baseball will always be tough because of weather and start time and travel early on thats why you have to give Hutch credit for what she has done, even Womens basketball had a great season, we compete in a conference with top ranked wrestling teams and top ranked womens volleyball. And again this isnt to take away from Stanford they have a amazing athletic department
