OT: Official Jeff Blashill returning NEGBANG

Submitted by American Hotel on

Since we had so much fun celebrating Kenny's return, here's to a redux. Read it and weep:

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2018/04/10/jeff-…

Though if you're willing to play devil's advocate, there is no mention of extending him beyond next year, his last. And the more I think about it, the more it seems conceivable that Kenny's two-year contract was merely an extended "severance," and there is a handshake deal in place between Ilitch and Yzerman for Stevie to come back after next season, allowing Kenny to take over Seattle (and hopefully take Blashill with him).

The Wings play hard for him. He seems to be good at developing youngsters.

It's not his fault that Holland hasn't drafted an impact NHL defensement since Nick Kronwall.

The Wings are a few years away based on their aging defensive roster with unmoveable contracts. Blashill being around only makes a shot at a lottery pick (Jack Hughes anyone?) higher.

The only thing that bothers me is that they talk about earning a spot and are always sitting young players for making mistakes, yet when it comes to veterans making those same mistakes, they are just rewarded the ice time from the youth. Where is the accountability for the coach? Years of too many men issues. Years of powerplay struggle. He is not a veteran coach either. If your coach, Non-Zetterberg 28+ year olds and GM are able to get by with shitty performance, how do you expect your young guys to be held to a higher level?

At this point Blashill only needs to be fired to send the message that mediocrity won't cut it here. The Wings have 1/2 season left to pull that trigger. Just letting his contract run out sends the opposite message imo (Hello Brad Ausmus!).

Would want to come to the Wings right now? Team is in a rebuild probably lasting several years. Holland won't probably won't be here beyond next year - two years at most. The new GM will want his own coach. Keep Blashill and tank again in 18-19 so we can get more high picks and get some elite talent that will help us seriously contend for Cups again.

the way the Tigers and Red Wings are looking and operating (cutting salary, investing in younger players, etc.) the Illitch family may be making them profitable to look better for a sale.

The Wings aren't cutting salary. The money saved from Green/Tatar/Mrazek are going back into resigning Larkin, Mantha, Bertuzzi, probably AA and maybe Frk. A backup goalie,  1 or two more ELCs to this roster and we will have ~3 to 4 million left over. I'll believe Holland won't spend it on an aging veteran when I see it.

Has turned into this.

Same with the Pistons.

Whether or not Blashill is at fault for the current situation is meaningless. This thing needs to be cleaned out, top to bottom.

Pistons seem closer to relevance. They have a loaded roster. A full season with Blake Griffin is a playoff season (but probably just barely).

Blashill took a big risk in coaching the Wings, is the truth of it. He had AHL and college success, and his trajectory was steep.

I think the Pistons are worse off than the Red Wings.

At least the Wings have some young talent and more high-level draft picks.

The Pistons are stuck with a HORRIBLE Griffin contract, and a bunch of parts that don't work, AND don't even get to pick in the 1st round in one of the deepest drafts we've seen in forever. Do not let this little mini-success at the end of the season fool you. They've had a health Reggie and Drummond time and time again, and it just doesn't not work. The formula is broken.

I just don't see how you look at this roster and say they are loaded. They are exactly where they should be, which is average. And they've been that way forever now.

Doesn’t not work? I don’t watch the NBA (or basketball at all really), in the era of super teams, I don’t think you can really expect much out of a team not called Golden State or a team without LeBron on it.

is load up on talented young players to usurp Golden State when they're ready to fall. Teams like Philadelphia and Minnesota may be in position to do that, but they had to go through years of sucking to get there. The Pistons have always had a reluctance to just tank a season, and as a result they have a hard time obtaning young talent.

Double negative.

Does not work. The formula is broken.

And that's not true. I can expect a franchise to go through the normal route of the NBA process. Succeed, lose, rebuild. This team has been stuck in average for a decade now. Winning just enough to not pick in the top 5, but never making the playoffs.

Teams outside of GS and Cleveland can succeed, and have.

SVG made the Blake trade to save his job. They've seemingly sold out for a spot in NBA purgatory (6-10 seed) until Blake's contract expires, i.e., exactly what they were doing before the Reggie-Drummond era began.

Blashill returning doesn't register highly on my rage meter.  Other grievances place higher on my rage list, including someone who listed some seriously gross candy on their favorite sweets list yesterday.

A few years back the general tone here was that Babcock didn't matter, that Blashill would be better with the young players etc. So now they resign Blashill and extend Holland. Yzerman is never coming back, either. Man, times change.

Blashill is not the reason why the Wings are where they are. We’ve not seen him with anything near a contending roster. He has made some annoying choices with, at times, giving veteran mediocrities minutes that would be better distributed to younger players. That changed in the second half of this season when the team more fully committed to a rebuild. I particularly liked his long leash with Joe Hicketts at the end of the year, and his going all in on Larkin, Mantha, and Bertuzzi. I’ll note two other things in his favor: 1. He harps on character a lot, which again can be annoying, but this team did have it. They competed as hard, I’d say harder, than any other non-contending team. They were never a locker room mess, which is no small achievement for a cellar dweller—just look at other bottom feeding teams this year. Lots of credit for this should go to Zetterberg and Kronwall, but Blashill should be commended for this. 2. He’s right about Andreas Athanasiou.

So KH steps down next year and Stevie comes home to hire Gallant as HC?

LOL.... "We're getting the band back together"

I think theres some bad blood between the Wings organization and Stevie. I dont think he wants to be here, I mean why would he. He has a good thing going over there. Other than hes a legend here why else would he come?

mgobaran

I do not believe there is any bad blood between him and the organization.

  • It's my understanding his family still lives here, at least part time.
  • Red Wings Roster/Prospects will look a lot more inviting in 1 years time.
  • Red Wings contracts won't look as bad in 1 years time.
  • Tampa Bay has 1-2 more years of cup contention before some roster attrition makes the good thing he has going over there closer to the Red Wings situation. (Not the same, and still better, but closer. Enough so that coming "home" won't be such a drop off)

i like Jeff.

I got to meet him about 5 years ago when he was still the Griffins coach. He is the cousin of my co-worker and she invited him to her daughter's open house for graduation.  He was humble, genuine, sincere, and I had the chance to talk hockey with him for 15 minutes or so.  I truly hope he can get it turned around. I am rooting for him.  Go Wings!

Fuck it. I’m out. Wake me when the Illitch’s stop cosplaying as the Ford Family. Until then go Seattle Name TBD! Or go Stars for the time being.

The wings may have the least talent in the NHL. They’ve butchered this rebuild with long term contracts they can’t shake. This is going to take a long while....

jbrandimore

April 10th, 2018 at 5:38 PM ^

Anyone know if it was feasible to just buy out some of these shitball contracts? Say you dump Danny D, Abdelkader, Ericksson, and Helm. How much cap relief do you get for that?

I believe it's 1/2 the money for 2x the duration. It doesn't matter though. Most of this clears up in 2020/21. The Red Wings need at least that much time to get our defensive talent groomed enough to be competitive again. Then we need to get lucky and land an elite offensive talent, and get a goalie to work out. This is going to be a long process. Once our roster is built up of young talent, we can sign FA again to put us over the top.

The big problem is that our youth is already getting old. NHL Forwards hit their scoring prime at 24 years old nowadays. Bertuzzi, Mantha, AA are all 23 already. We absolutely need Rasmussen and Svechnikov to work out into top 6 forwards and soon.

Dylan Larkin had 7 goals in the final 10 games and looks to have transitioned successfully to center He’s officially a building block and given that there were periods in the last two years where that seemed doubtful, it’s the biggest development for the Wings this season unless we should end up winning the lottery
