Lacrosse Saturday Open Thread: UMBC Did It Again

Submitted by twotrueblue on

It's not until tomorrow until the men travel to Rutgers and the ladies to face off against Johns Hopkins, but plenty has happened since last Saturday and today will be a big day in college lacrosse nonetheless. The ladies played Notre Dame in South Bend on Wednesday, falling to the Irish, 14-8. That puts the ladies at 5-8 on the year. They are 1-2 in conference play going into the Johns Hopkins game tomorrow.

Elsewhere, the men's RPI took a small hit when Yale lost to Bucknell in overtime, 9-8, on Wednesday night. But on Friday, it recovered when the Upset Special UMBC Retrievers* defeated #1 Albany, 11-7. Villanova got to play "One Shining Moment" before their #7 Wildcats faced off against #4 Denver, but that was the only celebrating they did last night as Denver beat them, 22-6.

Today, Big Ten conference play continues and there's some ACC action and Patriot League play, too.

Ohio State at #5 Johns Hopkins, now on ESPNU (JHU leads 5-3)

#11 Loyola at #17 Lehigh, 1:00 PM, CBS Sports Network

Army at Boston University, 3:15 PM, CBS Sports Network

#6 Duke at #12 Notre Dame, 4:00 PM, ESPNU (Go Duke?)

Colgate at Navy, 5:30 PM, CBS Sports Network

#13 Virginia at North Carolina, 6:00 PM, espn3

I saw the UMBC women's lacrosse team at a Panera Bread in Baltimore last week.  I recognized their "Retrievers" script and dog logo on their jackets.

I told them "Everybody knows who you are now!".  They laughed and said that 3 weeks ago nobody would even know if they were a high school team or a club team.

That's what makes March Madness the greatest sports (and cultural) event of the year.

Blue Jays win! 13-10 is the final. Johns Hopkins is now 8-2 and Ohio State falls to 5-6. Michigan faces Ohio State next week in the 'Shoe before OSU's spring game. One thing of note is Ohio State won all seven faceoffs in the 4th quarter. Can't let that happen next week if the Wolverines are going to beat the Buckeyes.

Virginia 15, North Carolina 12

That puts the Tar Heels at 6-6. Won six straight to start the season and now in the midst of a six game losing streak. The Syracuse and Notre Dame games are now "must wins" for this squad which won a National Title just two years ago. Two wins gets them to 8-6 and enters them into the ACC Tourney, where they will likely need to win at least one to get into the NCAA Tournament.

Virginia meanwhile in its second year under Lars Tiffany is at 9-3 with games against Duke, Vermont, and VMI along with an ACC Tourney berth left in the regular season. 12 wins are well within reach for this Cavaliers squad, a win total they haven't reached in quite a few years.

ND continues to suck which is pretty frustrating because that takes some of the shine off that signature W.  I'm not too worried about that Yale loss. But I keep going back to that Penn game, which was very winnable for Michigan but they let it get away.  That was early on in the Conry Era so its not a bad loss at all, esp. after they beat #1 Duke the next week. It's definitely M's worst loss on the year thus far and its too bad they couldn't have stolen it!

But #1 & #3 and #7 all lost this week so far, so hopefully Michigan can take out #9 today!
