Georgia Tech Disses Wilcher; Wilcher Isn't Happy

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Cass Tech coach (and former U-M star) Thomas Wilcher tweeted that he was dissed by Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson and his staff when he brought a group of 100 football players from Michigan to Atlanta for some sort of clinic.

I dunno know to embed tweets, but this is what Wilcher wrote: "Never again. GEORGIA TECH Paul Johnson head Coach and coaching staff NO SHOW!! 100 strong FOOTBALL PLAYERS FROM MICHIGAN and NO SHOW ANY GT COACH!! WOW!"

(Edited to remove references to the 1934 Willis Ward incident.)

That's rude.

But being rude is not the same thing as being racist.

AFAIK, Paul Johnson has never shown any signs of any kind of racist behavior.

I get the point you are trying to make, but the context of the post is not right.

You may want to edit it though.  Because it really looks like that is the point you are trying to make.  It just does.

I'm sure GT has pissed us off about something football related in the past.  You should dig that up and use that.

And basically said. We spent 1 hour w the guys after the facility walk etc: don't know what you guys were expecting during Spring Ball

No different then Drevno no showing for a meeting w a certain Cali OL and never calling or cancelling, just didn't show up after Drev set up the meeting. The OL is a stud in the Pac12 now.

GT sent the strength and conditioning staff. GT's head coach is prepping for spring practices! The biggest disservice here would be for Wilcher to steer his kids clear of a great school like GT over some petty drama.

I don't necessarily agree with the way that he handled the situation, but I definitely think this is shitty on GT's part.

Wilcher got a group of 100 players to go down to Atlanta to visit GT and they couldn't even take some time out of their practice prep to talk to the group?  I feel like that's disrespectful to the kids who paid money to go down there to visit (Even though I assume they were visiting multiple schools.)

Also, I doubt any players will want to go to a school when their coaches don't introduce themselves to the players when they visit so it's not a good look on the recruiting front.

This autumn will feature a matchup of Cass Tech playing Georgia Tech. Vegas is betting that Paul Johnson will explain the stunning GT loss as the result of Cass Tech showing up ready to play without telling him in advance or anything.

Talk about redundant, every other poster wants to say that the Willis Reed incedent is a bad comparison to what happened to coach Wilcher.
So what exactly did happen?

in terms of what was agreed, expectated, delivered and experienced.

That could be on GT.

But that could just as easily also be on Mr. Wilcher.

This is what I see:

We now have 2 to 3 generations of Americans who somehow believe it is prudent and  good practice whenever one feels indignant or wrong to immediately and first go straight to Twitter to trash other people, organizations, etc. and throw around indictments and accusations from a distance - often without proof.  Often the truth is never really uncovered, unless there are witnesses who chime in to corroborate defense. In which case, we have that "ooooh epic burn!" moment.  On Twitter. Yeah.  That's actually considered composed, appropriate and adult behavior nowadays.

Then when the damage is already done, how does one recover?

They have already trashed your reputation publicly.  And you've spend lots of time and effort to defend yourself against indictments.

I don't like the way this appears to have been handled from the outset.

More of the same bullshit when power, authority is out of balance with responsibility, accountability and consquence.

Pick up the goddamned telephone.

Write a letter.

Enough with righteous indignation grand-standing maybe?

Maybe I'm the only one fatigued and irritated by it.

Too bad this wasn't the coach of a team that every gets a recruit we want. Why can't Urban or anyone in the SEC diss Wilcher?

Wilcher is really feeling himself as a dispenser of talent and PJ doesn't give 2 fucks about things like that. GT is an elite university and any kid would be blessed to have the opportunity to even go there as a regular student. If Wilcher wants to steer kids away, he's got his priorities fucked up.

Oh well. We win or lose with nothing higher than low 4* recruits anyways, and this wont affect PJs relationship with Georgia coaches. The only people negatively affected by this are kids with GT offers, but no M/ND/OSU offers. If Wilcher would rather have those kids in East Lansing, well...how sad for them.
