We are at the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, hiding from the angriest point guard who ever lived.

We Couldn’t Have One Without the Other

We can do this because people support us. You should support them too so they’ll want to do it again next year! The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan there would be VERY long hiatuses between podcasts.

Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Peak Wealth Management, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad,Human Element, Lantana Hummus and Ecotelligent Homes

1. Ent Moot: The FSU Game

starts at 1:00

Emotional impact of 7’4” dude’s emphatic blocks was greater than their basketball impact. Michigan had a tough time getting into their offense; FSU kept them to just one or two actions. Nice to have Duncan to shoot some free throws at the end there because we almost died the way we thought we would. Is Reggie Miller fine? No, Reggie Miller is not fine.

2. Death from Above: The Texas A&M Game

starts at 20:36

People on Texas A&M bench putting their towels down and dying. Least hyped tip slam of all time. Z responded to T.J. Starks’s “unguardable” comment by setting a first-half turnover record. Every time it was about to stop being a solid, no-nervousness game, Charles Matthews took over. Both games he’s been way more effective stopping in the lane: got those breaks fixed. Thank you C.J. Baird!

3. Final Four Preview

starts at 38:13

Sorry, Sister Jean. Surprising Final Four team but closest thing to a mirror match Michigan can get unless/until Villanova, except Loyola’s got a Donnalish backup center. KSU wasn’t very good, so this isn’t the craziest 11-seed run. New challenge for this tournament: everyone on the floor can shoot. However there’s a big drop-off in defensive athleticism. Offense is kind of beautiful.

Nova: ridiculous. Z is big enough to switch on to centers but Z isn’t thicc like Jalen Brunson. If Nova tries to with win this with Brunson post-ups, be our guest. Kansas has 40% shooters and a thunderdunker.

4. Ace’s Frozen Four Hockey Podcast wsg David Nasternak

starts at 1:09:54

Mel has us in the Frozen Four in his first year! Ace watches hockey and has hockey takes now. BU: Most talented team in the country and one of the worst-coached (down-year Kentucky of hockey). More of that Wisconsin stuff where there’s one too many attackers. Crapshoot hockey is fun when we get a Lidstrom bounce. Slaker got away with a PENalty. Northeastern: surprisingly dominant performance by top line vs the best line in the country. FYI we’re planning on a hockeycast sometime this week unless y’all have a major objection to that idea.

THE USUAL LINKS

C.J. Baird is going to be 80 years old that’s still going to be his avater. He doesn’t have to think about that anymore. He’ll like stand in profile at Ashley’s and hold his fingers up the right way and someone will buy him a beer. And that man might be me.

Is it just me, or did FSU play an amazingly un-sound defensive game?  They may have disrupted the offense early, but it was pretty clear pretty quickly that their defensive game was to have all those ents go battle of Isengard at the hoop with weakside help.  UM, was 1) slow to notice/do anything about it, and 2) just missed those wiiiide open shots.  I remember one late block were Z had it swatted out of bounds late in the 1st half, there were literally 4 FSU players under the hoops with Wagner, Robinson, Matthews all at the 3 pt line without a defender within 20 ft.  And Z tried the lay-up.  I felt like I was taking crazy pills.  IF UM just hits 3 more 3pts which is still below their season ave, it's a 12 pt comfortable win that people prbobably call 'dominant'.

There might be some credence to the idea that FSU's length was bothering our three-point shooting, but you have to put a *lot* of credence into the idea that being bothered on one shot throws off your rhythm on a different shot, because some of those were completely uncontested and still missed. I feel like a normal three point shooting day nets us a pretty boring, convincing win, and no one is talking about FSU's D.

Michigan's 3-point shooting is inconsistent, no ways about it.  Beilein maximizes their chances to win by getting them open looks, but they've gone cold so often that it's time we stop treating those moments as bad luck and admit this isn't a classic Beilein offensive juggernaut.  The upside is that's not really a bad thing, because we have a capital-E Elite defense.  When they do get hot they will murderate anyone, but that's only happened once in the past four games.  Yet we've won those games because the team has what it needs to win rock fights.

Yeah, I forgot about that goaltend, and then I believe they turned that into a fast break and Wagner got called for a teerrrrible block that was pretty clearly a charge, they hit both free throws, and it was a 4 point swing.  UM had the chance to put the hammer down so many times in that game.

Also, but FSU is a pretty bad three throw team and they hit 90% in that game.  Normalize UM's three shooting and FSU's FTs and UM wins by like 20.

This one was different than usual. Normally Ace & Brian choose songs after the recording and post them in slack and David puts it together (I send him ads, he sends me back a podcast file, I listen to it and write it up/make the cover/upload/post).

However they recorded this one late at night and David just sent me four segments, and I woke up at 6 am this morning with no music selections and just pieces of podcast I had to put together. So I chose three songs.

  1. Portal song is always in my head during sudden death tournaments.
  2. My daughter and I were watching Sesame Street this morning, and I remembered Feist did 1,2,3,4 in the episode we watched last week, and I've had a crush on Feist since she performed Anthems of a Teenage Girl with Broken Social Scene when I was in college. I still plan to get that song into a podcast eventually.
  3. MC5 is a song I've wanted to use for the hockey team all year because it's such a 2015 Harbaugh year that's suddenly making us want to win now when we never expected to and really should't expect to.

Ok, for the foul in the last 10 second thing. This is annoying.

You foul. Done. No argument against it.

Not fouling is game over. There is a 0% chance of coming back when the clock hits 0 and you don't have shot in the air.

Fouling (even if it is a 90% free throw shooter) gives you, let's say, a .005% chance of making a comeback. That .005% is infinitely higher than 0.00%

Unless it's a 20 point game with 10 seconds left (so, like a .00000000000000000001% chance) you foul because otherwise it is game over.

Absolutely correct, even when facing a team that shoots 99.9% FTs as a team.  You still foul them.  You have to see if the pressure of making a F4 will impact their percentage.  It's stupid to consider anything else.

Imagine if Mathews doesn't foul with 3.9 secs left?

I thought the more disturbing thing of the Hamilton interview was that he didn't seem to have any idea how much time was left or how many points he was down.  Not a good look.
