Humblebrag/How Do I Watch the Game? (Possible Negbang?)

Submitted by 1989 UM GRAD on

Hoping the collective wisdom of the board can help me out.  I know there have been some threads on this...but I can't find them.  And, being a long-time Comcast customer, I'm not well-versed on cord-cutting and creative ways of watching what I want to watch.

I'll be on a plane to China (that's the humblebrag part of the post) during Saturday's game.  Flying Delta.

I have found the wifi connections on planes to be - at best - spotty.  What/how is the best way for me to have a chance of watching the game while I'm en route to China (thought I'd put that in there a second time).

(By the way, I actually had someone ask me if I was hoping that Michigan would lose last night...just so I wouldn't have to miss a game.  Is that even a thing that a true Michigan fan would hope for?)

Thanks for helping out this old guy!

I haven’t flown Delta to Asia, but I’ve flown it to Europe. I believe they had a fairly decent selection of US channels on their in flight entertainment... TBS might be a part of that.

The TV listing were pretty good. If it is the same and you get your live in-flight TV you should be fine. The listings were:

ESPN

ESPN2

NFL Network

CNBC

CBS

CNN

NBC

FOX

FoxNews

FX

Bravo

Cartoon Network

TBS

Comedy Central

Discovery

TNT

USA

Univision

You should get TBS if you are on a flight with free in-flight TV. I wish you luck. Go Blue!

not a trip I am ever bragging about, but then I am going for work and it means long days.

I don't remember seeing live channels on the flight like some domestic flights.  Have never tried the wifi.  See if you can do an app through the wifi to watch if possible.

I was flying internationally during the Houston game and was happy to see that Delta had CBS, TNT, and TBS. I watched a game on CBS and another on TNT, but when it came time for our game I switched to TBS all excited only to get "Feed not Available". After we landed the word quickly spread around the plane that Poole had won the game on a buzzer-beater.

I think a lot of people don’t realize how much of an upgrade Delta One is. It’s roughly 8-10x the cost of main cabin. On my most recent (earlier this year) trip it was $12k for Delta One versus $1300 +/- for various main cabin.

As for the OP, I don’t recall if they had TBS, but a quick check of their website should tell you.

You may be out of luck. You should check your booking for what WiFi is on service. I have not gotten WiFi or live TV on my handful of trans-ocean flights in the past year - entertainment has been pre loaded movies and TV.

If you do have wifi, your best legal option is Sling. Sign up for a 7 day free trial which will renew if you dont cancel. Even then you might need a VPN app - look through the app store for a well reviewed onem I use TurboVPN, and used that when I was oversead for last years tourney runs. It van slow down speeds though.

Your grey area option if you have wifi is a stream linked via a discord server. If you are interested try to find the latest thread about it - one was posted yesterday. That one requires a few more set up steps up front but is easy once set up - less trouble at flight time. And should not require VPN.

If slow wifi is a bottleneck you might have to settle for the audio feed from mgoblue

I am not versed in their offerings but comcast might also have an app that lets you watch live tv on pgone or tablet. some cable apps also allow recording so if you have no wifi you might go that route. shouldnt be too hard to avoid seeing the score in china

aside: if you plan to use google in china you will need a vpn so you may want to get that set up anyway

OK, can this old guy ask for further assistance?  I would normally ask my 16-year old son, but he sometimes knows less than he thinks he knows.

How do I set up a VPN?  What's the best way to go about this?

Thanks.

There are a wide variety of apps out there. Should just search "VPN" on whatever app store you use on your phone/tablet (Google Play, whatever Apple thing).

There are some free ones that are supported by ads, which are probably fine in a pinch. Some are less scrupulous and will likely sell your data, so be careful what you browse while using it. Paid ones are better if you would be using more long term. I don't have a great recommendation on which to use. I use one called TurboVPN when I'm abroad, which is free with ads. Pick something that has a decent review rating and number of overall downloads.

You can try this out before you leave. Once it's installed, open it up, and you'll have some option to select the country which you want to VPN from. You'll want to pick US if you're using a comcast app, or some other streaming app, as those tend to lock content out by region. If you're just using Google, you can pick something closer like Signapore or Japan if available, as you'll get better speeds by picking something closer, and there you are just trying to end-around China's Great Firewall.

Op, check the airlines live TV channels. You may get lucky.

If not, I don’t think the streaming sites will work, because you are not in the us.

If you want to try, download a free VPN (or a free trial) that gives you a US IP and then login to the NCAA app (you can download the app beforehand and make sure you can watch all of tonight’s games via the app and your cable logins).

I was on southwest for half the game last night. CBS was available, but no TBS. Not sure about Deltas lineup.

I also paid for WiFi with the slim hope of using the MM App to watch. As expected that was a failure.

Still followed score while watching the other game on CBS. Could have been worse I guess.

And was able to watch the game with Oregon on the TV in the headrest in front of me. The game was on CBS, so it was a major channel, though. I also got pretty good reception on my phone once I paid the feej. So just in case the inflight TV doesn't get TBS, you should still be able to get it on your phone.

But when I do, I post on MgoBlog so everyone will be duly impressed.

Also, IF I were (was?) to fly to China, I would check with the airline about their television services instead of getting 50 other message board guys to guess about it.

With the number of people on this board, it’s a given that someone will be in transit to - or already in - an exotic place. Let the man enjoy his moment!

Wish I could remember whether the upgraded Delta wi-fi has satellite TV on flights to Asia. We went thru Tokyo ito Thailand n November and I watched UM-Wisconsin via my sling box. I don’t think satellite was available or I would uave been able to watch on In Flight instead of my phone...

Since the start of this decade when Beilein has gone full Beilein mode, I've begun pulling out a calendar each year and marking off the NCAA Tournament dates, working backward from the first Monday in April.

AND THEN I GUARD THOSE FUCKING DATES LIKE Z ON THE UNGAURDABLE T&M POINT GUARD.

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll hop on this one.

I'll be flying Space X to Cina (airplanes are the past) and don't anticipate a problem since I have Dish and will fly right by the satellite.

In case that doesnt work, anyone know the channel line up in economy?

My last overseas flight, Delta didn't have the live TV available.  They do have an upgraded Gogo internet that allows streaming (you pay more for that than regular Gogo).  That might work...I haven't tried that upgraded access yet.

I fly Delta quite a bit and usually internationally. On domestic flights they often have the live TV Channnels but on International it's typically just seatback entertainment (pre-loaded w/movies, TV, etc).

IF the flight has GoGo, you might be able to stream the audio, but even that might be a stretch with the limitations. Your best bet might be following along on Twitter and/or finding someone who is Periscoping the game. You could also have a friend/family member text you during the game with updates as usually Messaging is free on Delta flights.

I'm not certain if running a VPN will help bypass the streaming content restriction that GoGo has.

Sorry if the humor didn't come through.

Every time someone posts about watching the game from somewhere even remotely exotic, they get a lot of snarky comments.  So, thought I'd just lean in to it.

Guess I failed to convey it in a way to indicate I wasn't really thinking that I was humblebragging.
