Posters Preseason Top 25

Submitted by jamiemac on

I touched on this in another thread. We had a few differents threads yesterday on various top 25s. And, man, there was a lot of whining, crying and charges of bias and/or sensationalism. There was also a lot of great conversation, debate and insights.  But, it did make me think. Everyone, including me, had a bone or more to pick with the rankings somewhere. But, at least these guys did rankings, and, in the case of Steele, you know he did a boat load of research. No way he doesnt know these teams better than most of us on this site. So, then, if we all know for sure where these rankings are stupid, biased and created just to start some buzz for their magazine, then what are our rankings? Lets hear them.

Its a Friday, it will be slow where I am working in advance of the holiday, the rankings because of the threads yesterday are on our mind. Let's do this. Show me your top 25. And lets freaking just shred each other. In the spirit, here's mine. This is the first time I've really put pen and paper to rankings. This is raw. Non binding. But forced to do a impromptu top 25 in a matter of minutes on the last Friday of May, here is what I got:

1  Alabama

2  Boise

3  Ohio State

4   Texas

5 Oklahoma

6  USC

7 Iowa

8 Virginia Tech

9 Florida

10  TCU

11 Auburn

17  Miami

18  Arkansas

19   Stanford

20 Georgia

21  Oregon

22 West Virginia

23 Oregon State

24  Florida State

25  UConn

There it is. I just reeled these off in a few minutes this morning. I cant worry about shuffling them around or editing. Gotta get ready for work. Crush these all you want. I'm sure I'll have buyers remorse on half in a matter of minutes. So, whats everybody else's top 25?

... Top 10 maybe, even top 5 is tough.  But 25 is a waste of bandwidth (how do you place 22 ahead of 24)?  That's not shredding, it's a fact.

That said, here's my Top 5:

1  Alabama

2  Texas

3  Oklahoma

4   Boise State

5  TCU

No way I put any Big Ten teams in there at the start.  They have to earn it and Saban deserves the presumptive number 1 because (a) scoreboard and (b) he's such a massive prick (albeit a successful one).

i want to do this, but i would like a little clarification - is number 1 team the best most talented team or the team most likely to win the BCS? this makes a difference in that i would not rank boise very high if it is in regards to BCS champion likelihood.

Alabama lost a lot this year.  I don't think they're going to be able to win it all again this year.  Don't get me wrong - they've got some excellent talent returning.  But they're going to slip up once or twice.

I think this might be a year where somebody who had a mediocre year last year ends up #1, like Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Oklahoma, or USC.

reasonable comments about a season still months away and getting negged?  Sheesh.

Regarding Bama, I have a suspicion you may be right, and they may slip up. But a one slip up team in the SEC typically isn't a road block to NC game as recent history has shown. Beyond the difficulty of repeating, their biggest challenge is going to be winning the SEC West, IMO. If they get to the SEC Title Game, I don't see anyone in the East beating them unless Florida is a lot better than I think they'll be, which is good, but not great.

last season.  Other than that it's is pure conjecture based on it being May and I haven't seen any teams since last season.

Everybody here knows about 10% as much about each of these school's rosters as they do about our own.  I bet 95% of the people here can't name one-third of the scholarship players at a single school other than Michigan.  Top 25 lists are beyond pointless.  These threads always turn into stupid debates where clueless people with ridiculous top 25s go do their research AFTER they make their lists and cherrypick data to defend their rankings.

    May 28th, 2010 at 9:55 AM ^

Not even a third of scholarship players start.  Why should I have to name anoher team's back-ups to prove that I know something about college football?

Besides, you could probably make that same argument about pretty much all TV analysts, sportswriters, and pollsters who actually submit an AP ballot, so what's your point?  Should we ban all top 25 polls because they're pointless?

you are right, better to just flame throw everyone than just ignore the topic if you hate it.  I love complainy posts, they rock!

Me personally, I come here to read and talk about football 24/7 - 365.  Does this particular moment fall in there somewhere?  If so, keep 'em coming... pointless or otherwise.

I really have a hard time putting Boise in the top 10.  I really don't buy into all their hype. They've never proved anything except for beating an Oklahoma team that wasn't the typical Okalahoma team because they were young and rebuilding again.  The Oregon team they beat last year wasn't the same team at the end of the season.  I don't think they would stand a chance, literally, against the Bama's, OSU's, Florida's, and USC's of a couple years ago. I think they would lose by 3+ TD's to those types of teams.

Sorry, I just had to go on a small rant about Boise. It drives me nuts every year!

I admit that outside of Michigan, Big Ten and VT I am basically clueless as to how great teams are going to be. Obviously OU will be back in force. I don't see Texas or Bama coming back as strong. UF will decline a bit. VT looks like they have a chance, but they always choke... USC won't do as well as they should... I just hope we play spoiler to OSU this year.
