Violation Misinformation

Submitted by jb5O4 on

I wound up sitting next to a Notre Lame alum on a plane ride. We were having a decent conversation about football in general. Then he brought up the allegations. I said its not that big of a deal, then he goes on to say that Michigan had exceeded practice limits by as much as 20 hours a week. Where do these people get their information?

I guess this proves it. Idiots all across the country read the Detroit Free Press. It's the only one that appeals to their distinct inability to read.

...they get their information, it's about how hard it is for misinformation to be corrected once it's in the general consciousness.  All you can do is keep trying to put out the accurate information.

in the NFL before we start saying he's doing well. I'm not a Bengals fan, so I'm not really sure, but I believe his only regular playing time (apart from special teams) was as a nickel back. No doubt he would have been quite good in a limited role like that at Michigan as well. Let's wait until he starts playing on first and second downs in the NFL, if he ever does.

This is exactly what I've been talking about.  All of my friends give me so much crap about the Michigan violations and then when I explain what actually happened and what the results were they all say "oh, it sounded much worse than that."  Curse you Freep, CURSE YOUUUUUUUUU

From his brother who heard it from his father-in-law who read it on an MSU message board by a poster who talks to his buddies on the softball team who listen to Jeff Defran who read Michael Rosenberg who's angry about losing special access to the head coach he had with the previous coach.

Reminds me of a simple childhood lesson. The teacher would line up the students and whisper something like, "I like stretching in the morning" in the ear of the first student, and then that student would then tell his version to the student next to him, and so on down the line. When it finally reached the teacher again it resembled something like, "I like to eat CARA forms for breakfast."

It's like Brian and everyone else has been saying, read the damn report before you start running your mouth about things you know absolutely nothing about.

...sorta like "Under the Tarnished Dome."  Then ask why ND still isn't good as they used to be before the book came out.

Edit: Reading further down the thread, I see I was sorta beaten to the punch by willywill, but for those who never read this book, it trashed Holtz and ND.  The worst accusation, and the one that affected recruiting the most, was that Holtz would ignore injured players, refusing to even acknowlege their presence in a room until they were well enough to play.

...not everyone reads the freep anymore.  It would be nice to see an apology, as if that's ever going to happen.  It will be better to see it go under.

In all honesty, I wouldn't listen to what an ND alum has to say.  As long as that school and that team are laboring under the delusion they are the winningest program in college FB, that they will win a NC next year, without any evidence at all to back it up, it's like debating with a brick wall.  Yeah, you can debate with that wall, but it's not going anywhere, no matter how hard you bang your head against it.  Water off the back, 38-0 in 2003 and 2007, and The Catch.  That's how I remember them.

I find that their fanbase consists of two crowds:  (1) legit ND fans who actually follow the team, get into the rivalries and actually have some rooting interest, and (2) the remainder, who follow ND because, hey, they are ND, because they liked Rudy or because they are Irish.  I actually find the first category to be pretty well informed and reasonable (relatively) in their views and opinions on college football.  The second category are on the level of the truckdrivers that tailgate outside the 'Shoe.
