OT: CBN right now: new Flaming lips and GBV

Submitted by Snidely Doo Rash on

Heads up.   CBN DJ just announced he is playing new FLaming lips cover album of Pink FLoyd DSOTM in its entirety at 2 pm ET, and he encouraged everyone to turn on if they possibly can.  Right now he is seguaying into GBV.  FWIW.

This is the first time I've ever heard this and so far it is freaking awful. I love DSOTM, easily one of the best records of all time, I think the Flaming Lips have butchered it.

As an old musician who still gigs, I try to keep an open mind to stuff like this.  I saw Floyd do DTSOM the first two times the DTSOM tour made it to Detroit, and have listened to a lot of live tapes of DTSOM.

Also, I have seen the FLips and, though I haven't memorized any of their stuff, I do have a couple of their discs.  I did, however, find some live DTSOM snippets on YouTube.  When I throw all of this in the cerebral blender and turn it on for a few minutes, I get this:

1.  It is impossible to fully recreate Floyd, even if you are playing their music note for note.  There is a feel that nobody gets, even the better tribute bands.

2.  As with PF, the FLips are a band that really has to be seen live to fully experience what they are about.  Floyd's DTSOM was a classic and brilliant album, but the live show utterly blows away the album.  Sadly, listening to live versions of DTSOM on tape really don't do the experience of having been there justice.

3.  Expecting the FLips to put out something that is just like Floyd's version is like expecting Chris Simms to be exactly like Phil Simms.  The FLips are OK, but they are certainly no Pink Floyd.  Music has changed a lot since 1972.

4.  If you can release all expectations of the FLips being a Pink Floyd tribute band, or being as good as Pink Floyd just because they are covering DTSOM, it can be enjoyable to listen to.  The NYE performance brings some pretty cool energy to the songs.

5.  If you don't like their style, though, I can see how this would totally suck for you.  I have friends from that era who would vomit listening to this.  I also have some who would break out into what used to be called a "shit-eating grin."

6.  In a way, this band doing this music reminds me of Dread Zeppelin.  It's fun if you want it to be, but blasphemous if you worship at the altar of classic rock.

7.  If you can get ahold of Zach Randolph, have him sell you some of what was in his SUV, fire one up, and fire up "Yoshiri Battles the Pink Robots."  You may decide you like them.  Or not.  They are definitely a acquired taste for most.  I like them because they are different and creative, but being different doesn't always guarantee high quality.

8.  All-in-all, I like it, but I can see how someone could really, really dislike it.  I like it when bands make a song theirs instead of trying to produce a pale imitation of the original.  Sometimes people like it and sometimes they don't, but at least it is real.  It's impossible to expect anything accurately from the FLips, but the NYE songs on YouTube are pretty much what I would have expected, with the exception of the tempos being a little faster.

And then they interrupt during Us and Them. That was always my favorite track on DSOTM, so if TFL do a good job on it my e-pinion will change.
