Pick a starting 5

Submitted by TK on

Similar to the NBA jam discussion and just for fun (since we love fun irrelevant topics here), which starting 5 would you take? We are assuming everyone is healthy and in their prime (as in final season at Michigan). I feel this is a virtual toss up to me so someone sway me.

PG Walton SG Stauskas SF Levert PF GRIII C McGary

OR

PG Burke SG Rahkman SF Hardaway Jr PF Wilson C Wagner

*Not asking for an all time starting 5, just to pick of these 2. Sorry for the confusion I guess. *

Hudson  Bredeson  Ruiz  Onwenu  JBB. Sorry, just in football mode. Wrestled in high school and never really cared for basketball, but these guys are fun to watch and man I hope they win the tournament. Call me a homer but these guys seem to ooze class compared to the team out of east lansing and especially the coach. As far as the line up, I will just go with what the doctored ordered. Go Blue and kick states ass again.

I agree with Gary Grant, Glen Rice, Cazzie Russel and Rudy T.

But, I gotta go with Webber. Best center to ever play at Michigan regardless of how you feel about him personally.

Also, on no planet is Glen Rice a power forward. But, I'd still go with your lineup because nobody on this planet can go basket for basket with him.

PG Burke, SG Stauskus, SF Hardaway, PF GR3, C Wagner.

Close with McGary but I don't feel like I know his ceiling with UM because he barely played! I know what I'm getting with Wagner!

Walton - 2

Stauskus - 3

Wagner - 4

McGary - 5

We just did not see enough of Wilson-college for me to include him, nor was he an all-out force like McGary for the brief time he did play.  Also, Levert's college career was aborted so I never saw what he would eventually become in college.

Yes, I am aware I have two point guards.  Both were too good to leave out.

To clarify I’m not asking for an all time starting 5, I just picked 5 guys each from the recent era (Last 5 years) and thought it would be a pretty close matchup. We’ve been blessed with some good talent lately. A lot of “what if’s” if some guys stayed healthy or stayed another year.

that so very few of you got to see Cazzie Russell play basketball.  His time at Michigan brought more positive national exposure than perhaps any other player in U of M basketball history.   To leave Cazzie off any of these "All-Star" lineups is just not right.

Go Blue!

He said "pick a starting 5".   To be even more nit-pickey he didnt even specify pick a MICHIGAN starting 5 so I'm changing mine.  I'm going with the following 5 now

PG: Magic Johnson

SG: Michael Jordan

SF: Larry Bird

PF: LeBron James

C: Wilt Chamberlan

Go ahead and take that one on you Burke/Stauskas lovers you......

Show me where it asks for a starting five by era and show me where it asks for a Michigan starting five.

BTW I am just busting balls here.  I do know what you meant even if I chose to ignore it by sticking to the actual text and not your fairly clear inference.

Limiting it to just players I have seen (since 1975 or so):

G Rickey Green
G Trey Burke
F Glen Rice
F Loy Vaught
C Phil Hubbard

I always liked Loy Vaught's game a lot.  Plus each team should have 1 unusual or unique choice, so there you go.

EDIT:  I see your clarification, OP, on what you intended.  Sorry to take this off topic, I guess.

I’m tempted to say the 2nd team because of the talent, but give me the 1st team. I say that because all those players actually played with each other and their chemistry would be there from the get go

Burke-Stauskas-Rice-Webber-Wagner. I was going to have McGary as my 5 but I felt weird about putting a guy who only played here for 5 seconds on my team. Plus, Webber/Wagner would have much better floor spacing in a JB offense.

1 - Burke

2-  Stauskas

3 - Rice

4 - Glenn Robinson

5 - Webber

Coach - Beilein

(Burke, Rice, and Webber are no brainers)
