Selection Sunday update on seeding/potential playing locations

Submitted by Mr. Elbel on

My apologies for the block of text. I won't be able to edit this post today but feel it's needed ahead of the fireworks tonight. Mods, if you want to throw some paragraphs into this thing for the sake of people's eyes, that'd be helpful...

Michigan is currently the 3rd 3 seed on bracketmatrix, but still have some outside chances of moving up. Our chances of getting a 2 seed come down to both Tennessee and Cincinnati losing today and falling behind us. Based on where they are now (UC 3rd 2 seed, UT 1st 3 seed), unless they both lose badly I don't know that it's possible. The 2 seed locations are Charlotte, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Detroit. Charlotte and Nashville will be swallowed up by Duke/UNC or if UNC gets a 1 seed then either Xavier or Kansas would get Nashville. That leaves Detroit and Pittsburgh, but to get Detroit we'd need to jump not only UC and UT, but MSU and Purdue as well. I doubt we make that sort of jump if we haven't already, but hopping MSU is possible if the committee does the right thing (lol).

If we get to a 2 seed, it's behind Purdue as the 4th 2 seed with us playing in Pittsburgh. Much more likely is staying where we are, but possibly jumping UT, maybe UC (I think this is possible with WSU losing yesterday, making a loss today much worse), or possibly MSU. 3 seed locations are Nashville, Wichita, and two Dallas slots. As the current 3rd 3 seed behind MSU and UT we're in one of those Dallas slots, which is the furthest location we could be in outside of dropping to a 4 seed (all 4 seed locations are out west). If we can pass UT, that gets us to Wichita at least. Nashville is hundreds of miles closer though.

To get there we'd need to either jump both UC and UT with MSU getting a 2 seed, or jump one of the teams playing today along with MSU. Nashville is also in the south regiom, which would include Virginia as the 1 and possibly Cincinnati as the 2 if they win and stay put. I'd prefer that to playing in Wichita, which right now would have Nova as 1 and Duke/UNC as 2. The team that could help even more would be Arizona.

The matrix hasn't updated since their win last night, so they could conceivably hop us, though they have a long way to go from the 4th 4 seed. Them jumping up could be to our benefit as they are closest to Dallas. So for rooting interests today, root for UT and UC to lose badly and the committee to put MSU below us, or if not AZ above us. Of course, I think our boys can beat anyone anywhere if they continue to play like they have been. The location will definitely matter though to us fans who want to see the first couple rounds.

Go Blue!

MOD EDIT - I am guessing at breaks here. Not sure what the OP intended for breaks. - LSA

A 4 is possible, but auburn, texas tech, and wichita state all going down helped us out on that. Really only teams that can jump us are AZ and WVU, only one of which won yesterday. Kentucky could maybe make a really big leap from 5, but that's about it. I don't see a 4 happening. Would need 2 of those 3 to jump us. Then again the committee is the committee. 4 seeds play in either san diego or boise. So they'd really be screwing us over with a 4.

And yet I predict at least 27 (perhaps 28) more threads like this one before the clock strikes 12 tonight.

The ones before the selections are revealed will be like this post (wishful, unrealistic thinking) and the ones after the selections will be angry (we got screwed AGAIN) rants of rage.

Can you explain to me how this impacts you?  Clearly it does since you need to post this on almost all of the bracket threads or the MSU scandal threads?

But, how are you impacted by another thread?  If you have OCD or something and need everything organized in a certain fasion, OK I respect that but the board shouldn't necessarily accomodate you over others.  Should it?

It's like this every year...  And it's like this because frankly it interests people.

I have nothing against you or your post. It's good info. But the whole thing boils down to "Who knows? It depends on outcomes of games yet to be played and the whims of the selection committee." And that's not really helpful, especially when that's been the case since last Sunday.

We're probably a 3. Not in Detroit. We all know this. It's been the same case for 7 days. That won't stop somebody from posting a near carbon copy of this breakdown around 3 after the SEC Championship.

That said, I'm obviously cranky over my lost hour of sleep. If you guys want to obsess over it, knock yourselves out. Go Blue.

And I have nothing against your post. There may be more threads today but I hope there won't be. We'll see. It is one of the biggest days on the sports calender so we may have to deal with multiple threads related to that. I'd still rather have something Michigan related to obsess over than the heart of OT season.

This entire blog is about discussing the "Who knows?"  Recruiting, "Who knows?"  But we are going to have tons of threads on lots of recruits.  Upcoming game outcomes, "Who knows?"  But we are going to have a lot of threads with predictions for next year's football season.  Predictions based on flimsy evidence, "Who knows?"  But it'll be in the weekly write-up.

This enire board is all who the hells knows.  People enjoy prognositcating and discussing things on a discussion board.  It's insane I know, but for people who are tired of the discussion walk away rather than expecting everyone else to be tired when you get tired.

Not directed so much at you PB because you clearly share the sentiment I just posted.

to see real complaining, whining, and illogical, unintelligent thoughts mixed in with a big dose of desperate hope regarding the Tourney - head over to the RCMB.  It is always a train wreck over there - this is the extra special post Nassar, ESPN report, losing to Michigan twice, underachieving hoops team version.  They are off the rails - wow...

Every time I see something that makes me think "nothing can be more fucked up than that" on twitter, TMZ comment sections, facebook or "the most fucked up things in the world dot com" I go to RCMB and they put what ever it is to shame.  The best psychologists and therapists in the world would take one look at them and just say "Nope" and walk away...   Just think what will happen when they lose in football this year.  That's going to be beautiful...

Crashing the Dance has us above MSU on the s-curve. So going off that, it would take slotting Xavier and UC in Nashville/Pittsburgh for us to get to Detroit. However it seems more likely it’ll be out west someplace

With the invention of these cool transportation devices called planes, I’m not sure a couple of hundred miles matters much. I think what is more important is who we would match up against. The only bull would be if they had to go all the way out West and cross more time zones.

than Wichita or Boise or maybe even Dallas.

We have a ton of fans/alums in San Diego.  Put us there in a pod with a 6 six from the east coast (UF or Miami) and it'd be a great spot for us.  Boise is going to be a dead gym.  Wichita will be all Kansas fans.

I feel like the protected seeds should get to "draft" their preference locations instead of slotting them by straight distance.  Once they get the s-curve set, give the ADs a call (which they'd be waiting for) and say, where do you want to play, here are your choices.  Would be easy.

We're probably going to wind up being a 3 in Dallas which might be disappointing right now but in the end, it won't matter because we're heading to the Final Four no matter what.

It seems odd that all 4 seeds are out west.  It would make more sense to spread the seeds around the country as equally as possible to avoid a full-on screwing.  I mean, moving UM to CA (or wherever) would be a huge screw job when it could be somewhere closer.  I dunno, just seems like it could have been more equitable.

Really, the only thing I care about right now is that the committee puts UM above MSU.  There is no feasible argument for MSU to be the higher seeded team, and it would be a travesty to reward a team for getting drubbed at home, on a neutral court, and in overall record against good teams.

Do the right thing, Committee.  Do the right thing...

Once again, the NCAA awards sites nationwide, and once again, the west fails to hold up its end of the bargain.  This wouldn't be an issue if there were ever more than one top team out west.

Arizona probably ends up in San Diego with any 1-4 seed, whereas Michigan would have needed a mid-level 2 seed to get to Detroit.  It's not the committee being stupid -- it's the ACC, Big Ten, and Big XII each getting three teams in the top 16 and the Pac-12 getting one.

the OP got a ton wrong in this post.  One thing being that there are "2-seed locations" which is incorrect.  It's as you said, they other way around.  Committee seeds the teams and then slots them in by location in order of their placement on the s-curve.

Since literally all the top 12 seeds are east of the rockies, the 4s are going to get slotted into Boise and San Diego (which is great for Ariozona, not so much for everyone else).

Poor choice of host cities this year (really dumb to have Boise and Wichita as hosts in the same year as San Diego and Dallas), and some bad luck that there aren't many good west coast teams.

There is simply no reason for MSU to be a higher seed.  If the committee allows this is, it's all based on reputation.

We couldn't have done anything more to convince them that we are better than MSU.

Bottom line is our resume is significantly better.  Do not reward MSU for being the Wisconsin of basketball with the easy conference schedule.
