Final score 52-50.I knew a dude who didn't do well in school, but he was obsessed with winning. I don't mean that in a good way, entirely. Playing pickup basketball, he'd say you're out, call dumb fouls, etc.--but he wanted to get that W. That maniac obsession eventually pushed him into med school, and he recently graduated.
Long story short, I really believe this kind of thing can make a difference.

You don't follow crootin' much, do you? He's a 3-star WR out of Kansas City that was much under-appreciated in football because he didn't go to any of the camps. He was committed to some D2 bball outfit when Harbaugh was pointed to him by a local coach. JMFH fell in manlove.

Missouri St. is a D1 level basketball program! Actually they've made the NCAA tourney a few times recently. Must not follow 'crootin very well...
but they're D-1AA in football.

You make a great point and I think what you are seeing is Jim adjusting the sails as he goes along on the way he is recruiting.
Michigan is different. The demands are different. The resources and freedom on the academic side are different.
The backbone of the program the way Jim is constructing it will be the kind of talent who also wants what Michigan offers on all fronts. A recruit who sees the difference.
Remember Jim said he was rusty on the recruiting when he first took over.
Depending on how it plays out, this 2018 class will prove to be either proof that Jim won't be an effective/competitive recruiter, or it will be a pivot point for how he recruits going forward and give Michigan an actual edge.
I think people are way too hung up on star ratings and way too quick to judge. And in so doing they greatly discount the importance of a program having continuity where you have kids on campus for 4 or 5 years developing within that continuity.
And did you not watch DPJ become a downfield threat despite terrible line and poor quarterback play? You are talking about recruiting right now, and you are complaining about it. We had a very highly rated wide receiver haul as true freshman last year. Those players will make a jump as sophomores, that’s what happens in college football. Go cry on another shoulder about your recruiting woes, the rational pro Michigan fans are excited about our wide receiver corps.
