I knew a dude who didn't do well in school, but he was obsessed with winning. I don't mean that in a good way, entirely. Playing pickup basketball, he'd say you're out, call dumb fouls, etc.--but he wanted to get that W. That maniac obsession eventually pushed him into med school, and he recently graduated.

Long story short, I really believe this kind of thing can make a difference.

Talks about him at length in his podcast. Didn’t get rated as high because he didn’t go to camps. He’s too busy playing multiple sports.....Harbaugh says he jumped off the tape in a big way!

I don't get why recruits wouldn't want to come here with all the steps JH is taking to prepare these guys for life after football. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he's already sent 20+ guys to the NFL in his coaching career.

You make a great point and I think what you are seeing is Jim adjusting the sails as he goes along on the way he is recruiting.

Michigan is different. The demands are different. The resources and freedom on the academic side are different.

The backbone of the program the way Jim is constructing it will be the kind of talent who also wants what Michigan offers on all fronts. A recruit who sees the difference.

Remember Jim said he was rusty on the recruiting when he first took over.

Depending on how it plays out, this 2018 class will prove to be either proof that Jim won't be an effective/competitive recruiter, or it will be a pivot point for how he recruits going forward and give Michigan an actual edge.

I think people are way too hung up on star ratings and way too quick to judge. And in so doing they greatly discount the importance of a program having continuity where you have kids on campus for 4 or 5 years developing within that continuity.

I think people have a legit gripe on WR recruiting so far. On the positive side even though we haven’t seen it fully last seasons freshman group has potential to be really really good(Jury still out) then you look at Crawford, McDoom, and Nate Johnson and two have been downright awful and one is gone. So I understand why people are hesitant on this guy. You can throw out there that he didn’t camp because he played other sports all you want. The question is can this guy transfer his skills, against weak competition, to major D1 football?? Personally we need better

You’ve named two guys who haven’t done a thing yet in a Michigan uniform. Unfortunately it’s all talk and potential at this point. There was a reason they were splitting TE’s out as the main WR options over other guys!

And did you not watch DPJ become a downfield threat despite terrible line and poor quarterback play? You are talking about recruiting right now, and you are complaining about it. We had a very highly rated wide receiver haul as true freshman last year. Those players will make a jump as sophomores, that’s what happens in college football. Go cry on another shoulder about your recruiting woes, the rational pro Michigan fans are excited about our wide receiver corps.

I’m telling you that the group above the freshman, recruited by Jim has been awful. Agree with you on the potential of the freshman group but this past cycle should of had more top talent. Right now we have two freshman WR who have done a nice job in Black and DPJ. Two that people claim to be great but have yet to do a thing in a Michigan uniform. Hey but maybe you think two top WR in a cycle is enough in college football because injuries never happen. Of course we do put out groupings of 6 OL and all TEs so heck maybe it is.

Crawford, Mcdoom, and Johnson padded their stats against weak competition. Dude, other than 5 stars, you can throw all these kids in a barrel and pull a couple out and hope they develop.
