Insane ending to #1 Virginia @ Louisville

Submitted by Bambi on

For anyone here who still loves to root against Louisville (AKA all of us), some serious insanity went down to cost Louisville the game tonight on their senior night.

Virginia, down 66-62, is fouled on a 3 with .9 left. They hit the first two and intentionally try to miss the third but are called for a lane violation. On the ensuing inbound Louisville's Deng Adel tries to run the baseline, which is not allowed after a lane violation, and thus a travel is called. With .9 left, Virginia inbounds the ball under Louisville's basket and bank in a 3 to win it at the buzzer.

Insane. Fuck Louisville.

They were being blown off the court at the start and have somehow come back. I hope we don't play them in the championship game. Tough rival

That was one of the most remarkable endings you could ever see! And anytime the fighting Rick Pitino’s lose, that is a cause for celebration. I smile every time that I think about Coach Beilein defeating little pitino in his final game.

live with sound off listening to music and thought I was seeing things.  That was amazing and crazy. The announcers must have been drooling over LBJ then, but that was a heckuva play.   End of  Virginia Louisville game epic too.  Thank you both.

I believe that it happened, but I refuse to believe that's what he intended. No way. He probably had a little less space than he thought and just dumbass luck guided the ball through. If they tried to make a move like that in a movie scene I would balk at it and laugh at the preposterous silliness.

I love it! But there’s no way Virginia is a legit Final 4 threat. If I were Sparty, I’d gladly take a #2 seed if it was in the region where Virginia was #1.

What is that assessment based on?  Parroting talking points from some low IQ sports radio show?  You do realize UVA beat mulitple great ACC squads on the road and are #1 in KenPom and RPI?   Last night they didn't play against a good Lousivilel team on senionr night, but they didn't luck into a 27-2;16-1 record with an average margin of victory in the double digits.  Do a little research or maybe watch a game.

what kind of a moron fouls a dude shooting a 3 while up 4 pts with 3 sec left?  the clock runs out if you just stand there.  then, why even pass the ball near your basket at the end.  just throw it to half court with 0.9 sec left.  impossible to get a shot off.

their coach and players are idiots.

I have these same thoughts every single time Michigan is in a position like this. With 0.9 left, just softly lob the ball at your tallest player, standing at mid-court (or heck, even farther), and have him try to set the thing like a volleyball, as high in the air as he can. Even if you turn it over in that situation, it's going to be *impossible* for the opposing team to gather the ball and shoot it in 0.9 seconds. If your guy sets it, 0.9 will elapse before the ball hits the ground. Even if it just grazes him, 0.9 will elapse before the ball can go anywhere. And even if the opposing team somehow flies in and intercepts, their only option is to immediately chuck a half-court shot without even really being able to come set. UVa's only real shot is to force a turnover without any time running off, like a five second violation. All you have to do is make sure that one thing doesn't happen, and it's *so* easy to do that if you just think about it for even a split second.

AND IT'S NOT EVEN THE DUMBEST THING THAT HAPPENS IN THAT SEQUENCE BECAUSE WHO THE HELL EVEN CHALLENGES A THREE POINT SHOOTER WHEN YOU'RE UP FOUR WITH UNDER A SECOND LEFT!?!??!?!?!?!??!??!?!??!?!?!??!?!?

Glorious. Fuck Louisville.

On the other hand, if you try a long pass and it goes OB without being touched, the other team gets the ball where the pass was thrown from. Not where you want UVA to have the ball with 1 second left.

I thought the “rule” was you needed at least a full second to catch and shoot. Anything less than a second would only allow you to tip the inbounds pass.
