Softball Shuts Out Hokies, 2-0

Submitted by South Bend Wolverine on

Michigan softball took the field again today after an up-and-down weekend at FSU a week ago.  This time they're in Texas, and they started the weekend against a middling Virginia Tech team.  The offense was lethargic, generating only 3 hits on the day, but they did manage to manufacture a pair of runs on a HBP in the 2nd and a sac fly in the 5th.

Defensively, Meghan Beaubien was magical in the circle once again.  She went the distance, pitching another shut-out and extending her record to 5-1 on the season.  Beaubien scattered 3 hits, ceded no walks, and fanned 4.

Up next will be a clash with a scuffling Texas team.  1st pitch is scheduled for 6 PM Central time, and the game can be viewed live on the Longhorn Network.

solid game, tho the lineup was pretty different for this one. MB10 looked solid, but missed a lot up in the zone. No BBs of course so not much to complain about there. I think hitting is the issue - not a ton of power in this lineup and not enough speed on the bases.

That one call on the SB attempt was awful. and the 1st one I thought was pretty bad too.

their hitting going. 6-4 to start the season is definitley a slow start and most of the struggles can be pointed to very little hitting. Great job by Meghan in the circle again today.

Beaubien is unbelievably good. I don't even think she pitched - by her standards - all that well (her pitches kept sliding upwards) and she still pitched a nine inning shutout. She was by far the best player on either side and if she keeps it up (and the offense gets going), we should be a very tough out in the CWS.

Offense is going to be a problem all year, I'm afraid. You either have to hit for power or you have to hit for average, and unfortunately not many people are doing either one right now. Beaubien is a major bright spot though!

I love the way this team is starting.  Hitting has to improve and probably will but we all know shut-down ptching wins Championships in softball and this team has two freshmen who are going to do great things.
