Why not Michigan State? It would be weird choosing MSU over Michigan because I have been rooting against them my entire life. I am confident I made the right decision for me and I can’t wait to get started.

How many on here remember when this was your primary annual source of recruiting information?

FYI, I also remember when cars were called "horseless carriages" and pants were called "longshorts"...

Apart from these articles, I remember the extent of my recruiting knowledge beyond the names that would get national / regional hype (and there weren't that many overall) as being the first time that you saw certain players on the field and said, "Who's that?" and then you cheered them along like anyone else on the team.

I was always a Michigan State fan and they offered me. But when I got into the recruiting process I started to see my life in the next four years and didn’t like it at all, like how they’re having serious problems with players. That’s something I’m not into and don’t agree with and I try to get myself away from any negative things.

That deal would hurt any program's recruiting. I laughed at a couple of the Detroit msm articles which were rushed out in the first couple days after the OTL report saying it didn't impact recruits.

Recruits who are committed, but have other similar level programs after them will never admit it's a problem in the immediate aftermath. But they are definitely seriously weighing other options behind the scenes. Guys don't want to appear disloyal.

Then when it comes apart with a recruit it's always down the road and it always appeared to unravel slowly.  The offending school gets to save some face.

The bottom line is the net result over an arc of a couple seasons or more is rarely equal or better after something like this.

Expressed an issue with what is going on at MSU as the reason for choosing other schools. Dantonio still remains clueless and is circling the wagons instead of trying to improve the culture - a thorough house cleaning is still in order in East Lansing.

Yeah, that caught my eye as well.  I feel like that's going to be a big reason for them suffering in recruiting the next year or two.  Like, I get this happens elsewhere, but it rather clearly happened at MSU for a long time and nobody stopped it, and some kids aren't into going to a school that doesn't seem to really be all that interested in changing that culture.

sorry if i missed the backstory on this since i don't continuously follow recruiting, but any reason we haven't been on kolin demens harder given his brother played at michigan?

Demens doesn't really fit the mold of who Michigan has been recruiting for the past couple years. He's a long, lanky outside linebacker type. Michigan has been going after shorter, squatter guys on the inside (Devin Bush, for example), and they want S/LB hybrid types for Viper. Michigan threw Demens a cursory offer, but they didn't really pursue him.

Michigan is just fine talent wise. The city of Detroit produces a lot of talent that ends up in the NFL. Harbaugh has to offer the top 10-15 players from Michigan annually or else he will lose all the SE Michigan kids. He can't expect to get players from the South to come to Michigan if he isn't winning big games.

The state of Michigan is apparently in the middle of the country in terms of NFL talent.

Simply offering the top 10-15 kids in the region would be a bad use of resources and would hurt recruiting elsewhere. I'd love to know how not doing so has or will hurt Michigan in the future.

If Michigan offers - and pursues - the top 10-15 kids in southeast Michigan, they would probably get the vast majority of them. In a small-ish class like this one, you would be talking about almost filling up the class with those kids. Taking 15 in-state kids would only leave about 5 spots for players from elsewhere.

Not one of their commits said Michigan recruited them. Reggie Pearson was brutal, and another said he grew up an MSU fan and turned them down. At least they got the #1 guy on this list.

Is that truly a negative thing that Michigan didn’t recruit them? Performance on the field says the opposite, no?

Reggie Pearson also was never offered by MSU? Just looked it up.

Still think Hutch might have a bigger impact then Gervin. Kid is a stud.

If Otis Reese decides to go to Georgia (if UGA has room)...I wonder if Michigan will give a call to Demens and tell him he has a spot. I am curious if Demens is holding out for a last minute push by UM and if he’d sign with Michigan in that scenario. His older brother is a former UM player after all. I still want Reese, but I am curious how it all plays out if he picks UGA. It kinda seems like a possibility that Demens is holding out for that Michigan opportunity and will sign with Pitt if it doesn’t materialize. Just my theory. It’s probably wrong, but there it is.....

At least it seems that way to me. He'll get a chance to practice at his preferred position, then get moved. It looks just like Ben Mason's recruitment. We needed him at FB and didn't want a 5th LB in the class. We need Hayes at OT, not a 3rd TE. Maybe if we landed Patterson and Petit-Frere and missed on Muhammad the plan would change.

I don’t buy the whole “he’s coming in to start as a TE and eventually play OT” thing. I think he either A) starts as a TE and stays there B) starts as an OT and stays there or C) he’ll get on campus expecting to be a TE but the staff wants him to be an OT and he’ll transfer because he wants to be a TE. I just don’t buy that he’ll play one position and then seamlessly transition to another position. How often does that actually happen? I am skeptical about the situation. Hope I am wrong.

JimmyFresh

Yes, position changes can happen. Most the time it’s out of necessity bc coaches can’t figure out where to put a kid (like Chase). Just saying that those who think Hayes will start out as a TE for a couple years and then be a great OT down the line because it was all part of the plan (because that has been the narrative) are more than likely mistaken. The staff will probably try to quickly figure out in camp if he’s a TE or an OT and put him in his position group ASAP.

Was recruited as a QB, but I doubt he got serious consideration at the position. I don't think it's a new paradigm to tell a kid he can play the position he wanted to play in HS and when it does not pan out the staff moves him where he can best help the team. If Hayes can run fast enough (I don't think he can), he will play TE, if not I do believe this kid could be a stud LT in a couple years.
