MSU is investigating Sue Carter over a former relationship

Submitted by HAIL-YEA on

In what seems like obvious retaliation, MSU has opened up an investigation into a relationship Sue Carter had with a student 25 years ago. Sue Carter is the one who resigned from a position last week saying she no longer had the heart or desire to support that administration.

Here is a response in the article from Carter.

“I am sorry for the harm she believes I caused in a consensual relationship 25 years ago when I was not her professor and we were at different universities,” she said in a statement. “While untoward, this was a legal, mutual, very short-term relationship. I am surprised that the Office of Institutional Equity would launch an investigation without the courtesy of informing me and then announcing publicly prior to gathering any information beyond her allegations. This is a knee-jerk reaction to an accusation from a troubled woman made over a quarter of a century later ...”

They're playing by a very recognizable playbook.  Do a bunch of transparently evil shit and hope that your support base has bought in deeply enough that they find ways to justify or deny what you are doing.

I can't QUITE pinpoint where we've seen that recently... hmm...

let's count the ways in which this is ironic:

-MSU opens this investigation based on a single email, when the athletes' cases that involved physical injuries, police reports, witnesses, and such were swept under the carpet and/or reduced to nothing.

-MSU suddenly concerned over the welfare of undergraduate female students at Wayne State, while turning a deaf ear and blind eye to their own women and girls for decades.

-MSU for decades has sought to keep the lid on publicity for assaults involving athletes before all the facts are known....often obscuring them or hindering the investigation, but this one goes straight to the newspaper the same day, prior to there being even the possibility of the most basic examination as to the veracity of the accusation.

Now......if you look at the above and think that this woman just happened to come out of the woodwork on this day and that this wasn't in some way known about prior to this by the people trying to leverage it, then we see this very differently. It seems obvious that this was probably some long lost scandal that was dug up and is suddenly an offense because of the stance taken by Carter and was very likely being used as a bargaining chip to keep her in line and it failed.

JFC. They've totally lost it. Do they not have bigger fish to fry than retaliatory investigations?? Having said that, forgive me, a lot's gone on the past few days...who is Sue Carter?

She resigned from the MSU Athletic Department Board last week saying she could no longer support it. And this is MSU's response/retaiation.

On the other hand, it is hard for MSU to ignore any allegations.

But how is it retaliation? Someone made a report at time where MSU can't afford to let a single report pass by unchecked. So they're checking it.... And as far as we know, it actually has nothing to do with MSU or anything illegal. RIght?

Oh come on. Whatever happened had nothing to do with Michigan State University:

"when I was not her professor and we were at different universities,”

Do you honestly think that investigating Carter for this had nothing to do with her critical comments and resignation?

Or is MSU now going to be launching investigations into the past behavior of all employees prior to their being hired at MSU?

I think his point is why is MSU finally deciding to investigate THIS case that they really have no reason to investigate.   This is just typical hamhanding.   Doesn't look good and it won't help their case.

It may seem hamhanded, but this is actually a crucial time.  If they can scare off any other faculty from making critical statements, it effectively keeps everyone in line while the investigations are going on.  Silence is golden.

Interesting - and scary - to see what lengths MSU will go to to keep the lid on as much as possible.  In the Flint water crisis people turned up dead.  With so much money at stake here, who knows.

When you’re done here, you need to sign into your other name and head back into the thread about MSU getting a formal letter from the AG. Izzo and Dantonio are not getting a fair shake in there and you need to do everything in your power to defend MSU’s honor!

By wasting more money in an allegation leading to a possible suit against an ex-employee who had a consensual and legal relationship with someone more than 25 years ago while at completely different universities? I'm not following this financial decision making tree you've planted...

1. There won't be a lawsuit.  More than a year has passed from the time of alleged harm.

2.  Carter is an employee still, not an ex-employee.

3. The MSU policy does not prohibit sexual relations between faculty and students, so long as the student is not under the supervision of the faculty member.  Twenty-five years ago, Carter was a professor at MSU.  The complaintant might not have been, though.

So, like you (maybe?  I am finding it hard to bve sure of your position), I am not seeing the incentive for MSU to act on this at all, except in revenge for Carter's actions vis a vis the athletic council.

Whatever happened 25 yrs ago occurred at another institution, before Carter was an MSU employee. MSU was not involved in any way, shape or form.

MSU is not legally or morally or ethically responsible for a non-criminal act that happened 25 years ago at another institution.

Nobody in the federal government or the state of Michigan is going to be looking at what happened at another institution not named Michigan State 25 years ago.

How in God's name is it logical that MSU be concerned about something that happened at another institution, given all the far more immediate issues they are confronted with THAT HAPPENED ON THEIR OWN FUCKING CAMPUS.

“about something that happened at another institution” Thad’s precisely why. It makes the case that this isn’t just an MSU problem and these things happen everywhere. It’s deceptive to the max, but that’s the case they are trying to make. Their supporters on social media have been making it for over a week now, and I fully expect this will be the direction their public “defense” goes.
