OT: What Michigan Pro Sports Era do you have the fondest memories of?
January 28th, 2018 at 8:26 PM ^
Bad Boys were the best in so many ways. Detroit Basketball!
January 28th, 2018 at 8:28 PM ^
Yea the bad boys were the best. I modeled my game after their style.

You really need a life, job, girfriend, pet dog, or even a gerbil.

if he knew you in particular liked his teams.
You're more of a... Flint Tropics kinda guy. Not funny and all around horrible.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:39 PM ^
Stop posting nonsense.
January 28th, 2018 at 9:26 PM ^
(until his next intrusion, anyway)

Get my points back that got taken away for down voting his posts??

One thing I loved about the 1989 team was that the only player who made all-NBA was Joe Dumars and that was third team all-NBA (http://www.nba.com/history/awards/all-nba-team#/)
They played like a team in an era when Jordan was making the individual the focus. And the Bad Boys focused on defense.
Here is an old article on Daly from Sports Illustrated. He was just a great coach:
Daly has never been a my-way-or-the-highway coach. Neither is he a "system" coach. He came to Detroit with a penchant for offense, yet he won the championship with defense after hiring assistants with defensive expertise, such as Rothstein and Dick Harter.

Bad Boys & Wings tied for me. Michigan and The Tigers success was too sporadic.

Mid to late 80s. Tigers, Pistons, good times.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:28 PM ^
Al Kaline, Denny McClain, Willie Horton, Bill Freeman, etc.
Those were the days....
January 28th, 2018 at 8:52 PM ^
I like the Yzeman led Wings. Stanley Cups and goalie fights with the Avalanche.
January 28th, 2018 at 9:08 PM ^
beating the shit out of Roy. I savored those ass whoopins.
And Mickey Redmond laughing his ass off during the fights.. . .

sometimes i just need a good ol' fashioned hockey brawl
January 28th, 2018 at 10:30 PM ^
and the hit that started the brawl from 1996 a full 301 days before the 97 brawl

All the way through 02, the epic 7-gamer, my favorite playoff series of all time in any sport. The cap to a great rivalry.
January 29th, 2018 at 12:12 AM ^
without talking about the "Bruise Brothers" of the late 80's Wings, Bob Probert and Joey Kocur.
And then there's arguably the toughest Red Wing of them all: Gordie Howe. Gordie didn't need no stinking enforcers---he had his elbows.

I was a 5th grader in '68, having just finished my final year of Little League baseball. Those '68 Tigers were a never-say-die team, I believe they won 40 games that season from the 8th inning on.
8pm night games? NO PROBLEM, as long as I had a fresh 9-volt battery for my transistor radio; I seldom fell asleep with that lump under my pillow until the game was over anyway.
And World Series day games?
All nuns L O V E baseball, so when it came time for the first pitch, teaching and learning ended and a TV was rolled into the classroom. As soon as the dismissal bell rang, it was a race to the bike rack and a furious full-speed mile ride home in record time!
January 28th, 2018 at 9:57 PM ^
I just turned 9 years old in October of 1968.
I remember the night they clinched the series. Cars driving up and down 7 mile road near where I lived, honking their horns. It was a terrific thing.
January 28th, 2018 at 11:50 PM ^
also Northrup, McAuliffe, Cash, Stanley, Wert, Oyler, the Gator, Wilson, Sparma, even Jim Price.
But I don't recall this "Bill Freeman" you speak of.
;-)

I "vote" for 1968. A lot of people don't remember that the Tigers almost won in 1967, too, losing to the mighty Yankees on the last day of the season to lose the pennant.
January 29th, 2018 at 7:57 AM ^
The Tigers had to sweep a doubleheader on the final day but only could manage a split.
I believe that was their second doubleheader of the final three or four days of the season, due to rain outs.
January 29th, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
Dude, if you want to go way back there - and the '68 Tigers Championshsip was one of the most important sports events/memories of my life (along with osu upset in '69) - then you gotta put the Big Lefty in there!
3 Ws in a 7-gm series, including beating the indomitable Bob Gibson!
Cumong!!!
January 29th, 2018 at 9:02 PM ^
How could I omit Mickey Lolich? For that matter, also John Hiller, Darryl Patterson, Tom Timmerman, Eddie Mathews, Jon Warden. Wasn't Pat Dobson also a '68 Tiger? Who else am I forgetting?
(This is all from memory. I swear I didn't Google the roster)
January 28th, 2018 at 8:28 PM ^
And not just them. All the greats Jordan..Wilkins..Magic.. Barkley..etc. The NBA is garbage now but back then there were actual rivalries
January 28th, 2018 at 9:25 PM ^
Your hearts, they beat as one? No more love on the run!
January 28th, 2018 at 9:53 PM ^
Agree to disagree. I love the NBA and this year might be the best year in their history. Enjoy the Pistons though. I’m sure they’ll be relevant again...Sometime soon.
(Commence negs because I’ve insulted Detroit pro sports)

Anthony Carter with the Michigan Panthers.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:32 PM ^
Hebert to Carter!
January 28th, 2018 at 8:30 PM ^
Never paid as much attention to pro sports, but the mid-late 90s Red Wings get my vote for sure.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:34 PM ^
I'll bend the question and just say about 1995 to 2005 or so. Michigan football at it's best. Red Wings at their best.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:38 PM ^
Wow for football. I spent most of my time at Michigan during those 10 years. Is that why I'm so sad now? I'm joking, but kind of expected that's how M's supposed to be.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:47 PM ^
I was in DC in 2006 in a hotel watching Michigan murder a few Penn State QBs in a big game on the road to stay undefeated, then flipped channels to see Mags hit the walk-off home run against Oakland to win the series. 2006 was a good year.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:32 PM ^
84 Tigers and 89 Pistons. Great times
January 28th, 2018 at 8:35 PM ^
Red Wings from 1994-2010
January 28th, 2018 at 8:42 PM ^
Mid to late 90’s Wings were amazing, Michigan football was top notch, and Michigan hockey was amazing.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:44 PM ^
84 Tigers, "Bless you, boys."
Started out 35-5 and won the World Series on my 16th birthday.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:57 PM ^
when the Tigers were in San Diego. The priest spent most of the night wearing headphones listening to the game. People kept asking him for updates.
January 28th, 2018 at 9:17 PM ^
And Michigan shut out Northwestern that day at Michigan Stadium.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:45 PM ^
Tigers are the only Detroit team I follow, so I will say their recent run of success that ended a few years ago. Had a lot of fun watching the boys make a few series runs, caught a lot of games with my Dad, friends, lady, etc. Football is the greatest, but I understand Baseball being "America's pastime", things just feel better and brighter when the Tigers are good.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:47 PM ^
Ben Wallace was the man!! That 5-6 year run was fun to watch
January 28th, 2018 at 8:48 PM ^
I'm not sure I need to actually type out my answer
January 28th, 2018 at 8:49 PM ^
84 Tigers. I was 12. Dad and I watching the World Series. Gibbie will always be the guy who hit a big homer for the Tigers in my book.
January 28th, 2018 at 8:50 PM ^
I will go with FauxMo above there, and anyone who knows me knows it would take a lot for me to go along with anyone who had a clown avatar given how much I dislike clowns - mid to late 1980s Tigers and Pistons were some fun times indeed. Close second might be late 1990s Red Wings.
