Izzo: "I need time to sit and look at everything" and "I'm not retiring"

Submitted by Piston Blue on

Looks like Dantonio and Izzo are doubling down. We'll see how this plays out over the next few weeks/months.

Let them keep lying. It will be even sweeter when the truth is revealed. Outside The Lines is ruthless and never has a dog in the fight. They’ll investigate anything to get the truth. MSU will burn down.

It seems many of you just want a public hanging to ogle at. The big picture of systemic ignorance toward sexual assualt across many major universities is an after thought. It's much easier to focus your attention on getting the bad guy than addressing why all these bad guys keep popping up.

I would argue you need to get the bad guy before you prevent any more bad guys from poping up but you do obviously need to follow through with the 2nd part of that once you have the bad guy

CLion

You don't need to do anything. The judicial system will take care of who is the bad guy. If you want to do anything worthwhile, rather than sharpening your pitchfork over MSU personalities you don't like, consider why does this sort of thing keep happening. You think this is isolated to MSU? You think Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio are just especially evil coaches? Good grief. I wish I lived in that reality.

The judicial system failed to "take care of who the bad guy is" at MSU for over twenty years until someone else decided to do something. In fact, it sounds like the judicial system may have been complicit in covering up who the bad guys were in the process. No one is said this only happens at MSU and no one said it only needs to be dealt with at MSU. Nothing you said changes the fact that you need to bring the bad guys to justice before you can start preventing them, whether at MSU or everywhere else

The judicial system alllowed an MSU basketball assistant to plead down to a littering charge from assault and battery despite the physical evidence, victim and witness testimony. They also decided not to press charges on Appling and Payne despite victim testimony and Payne saying he thought she would feel that she was not free to leave. That sounds complicit to me

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think what CLion is getting at is that we should focus on what we can do. Maybe all these sexual assualts and the #metoo movement are symptoms of the way that we treat each other and the way we men view women. I'm not saying we're all creeps, but if we all took a minute to think about our own actions and thoughts and spent some time talking with the women in our lives, we could move things toward a more respectful, safer world.

(power, money, status) aspects to be addressed.and acknowledged

On a side note, I was really irritated by Jay Bilas' remarks in which he only remained in the realm of the general ("policy") while refusing to deal with the specific.  IMO, he's circling the wagons around Tom Izzo to the best of his ability.

As to the general, I think nothing would get others attention like Izzo and/or Dantonio not being able to remain at MSU.  You know, real ccnsequences at the heart of the forces that led to the tramplings of the victims.

No one is sticking up for Izzo and Dantonio. Why do you feel the need to say something so disingenuous? I'm simply saying, all you guys can think about is whether X coach resigns. You're getting caught up looking at the trees when you're stuck in a giant forest. The stuff happening here is the stuff happening all over our country. But I guess people don't want to try to address that because it's too abstract? Or I don't know. Just wait for the next school then get your pitchforks out and take glee in their burning while not doing a goddamn thing productive.

Imma type this in computer code

IF(bad thing not happen), Then (glad)

IF(bad thing happen), then (A: mad, but B. if justice served, happy that at least that happened.  Still sad that bad thing happened.)

That if clause was gonna get too complicated. Sorry to all the programmers out there; wanted to make it legible for normal people.

Can we stop saying this happens on every campus in America. It doesn’t. Sexual assault unfortunately happens on every campus in America. Coaches and leaders covering those assaults up and enabling a rape culture surely doesn’t happen on every campus and it definitely doesn’t happen at Michigan. If it did, I’d want what MSU should want-to clean house of anyone in charge. If your point is that no one is doing anything about sexual assault, you might want to turn on any tv or read any newspaper.

Beyond the gymnastics program and Nassar there has been a shit ton of coverups and looking the other way around criminal acts and sexual assault on both the bball team and football team at MSU. Just saying “this happens everywhere” is bs deflection. There was smoke around institutional failures here for years... now the fire is fully ablaze

We thought PSU was the worst. Now MSU is equal/worse than PSU. Does anyone honestly believe that other programs around the country aren't covering up similar stuff? I personally didn't think either of those two universities were "the worst" compared to what we hear about others. I'd like to see an independent body, monitor and control all universities in the country for the culture of sexual abuse in all university activities.

This could be a misperception on my part, but the public image of JoePa before the Sandusky mess was that he was an upstanding guy and was a good mentor for young (college) men.  I'm sure there were isolated incidents at PSU, but I haven't really heard of other cover-ups there.  Other than Sandusky, which was huge, there didn't seem to be a culture of sexual assault and cover up, like at Baylor, or Tennessee, and potentially now MSU.   It possible they covered up other stuff, but I've never seen any press on it.  (I'm not defending PSU. Just weighing in on the concept of "worst.")

is such a lame comment. Here is a piece of the OTL article that really got me pissed.. It's a reference to the US Dept of Education Office of Civil Rights Report.  Does this happen everywhere?

'The report states students told investigators that Michigan State athletes "have a reputation for engaging in sexual harassment and sexual assault and not being punished for it, because athletes are held in such high regard at the university." It also states that athletes received more training on sexual harassment and sexual assault than other students but noted possible mixed messages. It cites a program called "Branded a Spartan" about upholding the Spartan name. Some male athletes told investigators that "making a report about sexual assault might tarnish the Spartan brand," and at least one said he might not report an incident involving a fellow athlete to the Title IX office, according to the report.'

You want to rely on an unbalanced judicial system to do all the work? If we only needed to rely on the system to do its job then we would not have what you argue—a systemic issue of sexual abuse across the nation’s campuses. There are too many people who take power and misshape justice. Here, we have people who work for universities who do not do the jobs they are charged with: protect students who report assaults. We make these BS arguments about numbers of reported false occurrences to justify not taking actions for fear of destroying the athlete/person with power with possibly false accusations. We can start with trying to change the National culture we have towards these incidents, to assign the accused or accused guilty before due process. Yet, then the lack of public oversight allows for the silent endorsement of protecting the accused athlete. The odds are overwhelmingly stacked in favor of the accused in many of these cases. University systems need to commit to upholding the law, first, and not worry about a college’s reputation being sullied by an assault case going public. The public needs to change our responses to these cases—but that is unlikely to happen due to freedom of individuality an politics. Don’t judge a university because a student or employee was criminal; judge that university only when it is found to break ethics and hide predators. And then do not judge the university itself, but those in charge and in the know. But do not put the entire onus on the judicial system. It only is it’s most effective if citizens are honest and those in charge are ethical.

In a case like this where the there was a systematic cover up by the institution I'd prefer several public hangings to ogle at. People in positions of power that prey on children are the worst types of people on this planet. I hope they burn for this. And by they, I mean everyone that had any involvement in any capacity that didn't do everything they could to stop it.

When did "I am more upset about this than anyone else and find no enjoyment in it" become so fucking trendy? It's a shitty situation, but I do get a lot of enjoyment seeing a piece of shit program that puts winning above all else, including the safety of their students, burn. Justice is rolling down the tracks and I'm going to enjoy watching it bury these smug fucks.

As I was watching Izzo ramble on I was getting more pissed off as he continued trying to either deflect or explain things except there was no explanation, he pretty much was pleading the 5th.

He kept saying how he was for the survivors, blah, blah, blah.

How about saying he obviously did something wrong in how he handled the rape accusations and that he will do whatever necessary to combat the problems instead of giving us a bunch of BS.

I predict that Izzo and Dantonio will not survive this and they will be either fired or forced to resign.

Unfortunately winning trumps all with many fans Jim Tressel was also brought back and honored before our football game there a few years ago. I said it several years ago about Penn State that if this happened at Michigan I would no longer be a fan I don't believe in the winning at all costs mentality. And I believe it today if Izzo and dantonio are found to have been hiding sexual assaults than as a Michigan State fan which I am not I would no longer be a fan. Unfortunately the beneficiary of all of this is Tennessee and Baylor who will now be in the back of people's minds

He denied any wrongdoing and we saw how that turned out. Listening to statements, I think Dantonio actually tried to do things by the book and was not an enabler. He still might not survive this, but if he's cleared of the in house discipline of only calling the player's mom, then he did everything he could do. He actually kicked four players off the team last year before any of the recent media firestorm. And Corley was going to be a beast. A huge loss that probably would've been allowed to stay on the team at places like FSU (does Jameis Winston ring a bell?) or Baylor. I don't like Dantonio, but actions speak loudly. On the other hand, I think Izzo is lying and is hyper focused on winning at all costs. Gameday was more important to him yesterday. He's tone deaf. He sounds like Art Briles did a few years ago.

UMVAFAN

January 27th, 2018 at 6:53 AM ^

I should note that even though I think Dantonio did things by the book, he's awfully tone deaf in this whole thing, too. He cares more about clearing his name than anything else, which is human nature, but he should've held off on statements or issued a press release that he'll comply with any investigation. Ultimately, given what happened with the gymnastics coach, whoever is in charge of MSU or their athletic department should put both Izzo and Dantonio on administrative leave until relevant internal and external investigations are complete. This will impact the current basketball season and maybe extend to the football season, but what's most important?

like super nerdy stuff that I'm into (Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, board games), there is a term "opportunity cheats."  So, you've got the cheater who will deliberately attempt to gain competitive advantage by hiding cards up their sleeve or game pieces under their leg.  Obviously, everyone recognizes that person as a cheater.

Opportunity cheats are when you maybe didn't plan on something outside the rules going your way, but you still let it happen.  In a card game, that's like accidentally drawing 2 cards instead of one, but my opponent didn't notice, so I'll just keep the second card.

For these nerd games at professional levels (yep, there is aspirational play here too), opportunity cheaters are dealt with the same as the premeditated ones.  Bans, suspensions, etc.  At the very best, Izzo and Dantanio are opportunity cheaters.  They obviously knew the system they were directly involved with was faulty, but they didn't do a damn thing to change it.

None of the MSU players were charged, tried and convicted except the four kicked off the team. And, ultimately, FSU ended up paying the accuser in the Winston case nearly a million dollars due to irregularities in their investigation. His case wasn't as cut and dry as you make it out to be (and neither are any in the OTL report, or Brandon Gibbons case, or Grant Perry's for that matter). Calling someone a blind douche is a bit much, wouldn't you say? Not sure exactly what I said to prompt that reaction other than not wanting to crucify Mark Dantonio, who I personally think is a smug human being. I just don't like the "guilty until proven innocent" crowd. Let this thing play out. Clearly something is amiss at MSU and we'll soon know a whole lot more once investigations and trials are complete. Due process, my friend!

Dantonio took at long as possible before relenting and doing what he had to. He would not have been able to keep them on the team without shit blowing up. But he's done it under the table in the past with both sexual assaults and many other crimes. He is finally being exposed and should be ousted.

Dantonio also brought that piece of shit Auston Robertson (or whatever his name was) who had a record of sexual assault to go along with his gawdy starz coming out of high school. Many schools wanted nothing to do with him, but MSU did. The dude then raped a girl at Michigan State. How would you feel about the beloved Coach D if that was your daughter? Dantonio has had success, yes, and from the beginning he cultivated a culture of chip on your shoulder, particularly as regards the whole program's obsessive animus--Michigan. So much so that our own coach had to tell him to shut the fuck up about us. He said  "we're tougher," and produced some guys who seemed to develop a nasty strain of 'roid rage. His defensive coordinator once famously proclaimed that "we try for unneccesary roughness on every play." This was a thug culture, and there have been numerous stories of his players running around campus as though they were pillaging it. And the fact that so many guys were abusing girls and being put right back on the field is further damning. Dantonio did the dirty job they desperately wanted him to do, and he did it well. Fuck him.

I just don’t see how those two coaches will get anymore serious heat from the NCAA or any other body. They are untouchable- Maybe I’m wrong but we knew about most of this stuff as it happened and nothing came if it then.
