Must read threads for new members

Submitted by UMdad on

OK, my brother has become a follower of Mgoblog recently.  I was beginning to tell him some of the written and/or unwritten rules and things he needed to know, but thought I should bring in some help.  What are the absolute must read  threads that would give a new member a proper orientation into the purpose, preferences, and pitfalls of being a member of the mgofamily?

I'll start with help in picking his name

I cant remember specific threads, but I listed some rules that fly to mind:

1. Dont complain about points

2. Dont upvote your own thread (or post)

3. Dont reply just to reply (e.g., dont simply say '+1 to you sir')

4. If you discuss material from another place, provide a link

5. Dont link directly to the Fre3p; use the print function on their site and link to that

6. Be wary of overplayed memes or sayings (e.g., 'dong punch') as they are, well, overplayed

7. Be very wary of nicknames for that other school in Michigan; best to avoid all stupid, childish nicknames for other teams

8. Dont derogate just to derogate; dont simply criticize, provide an alternative perspective

9. Dont post items that have already been posted; use the search function, scroll through a page or two of the board

10. Always upvote blueblueblue

The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald

Chapter 1:

In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind ever since.

"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had."

He didn't say any more, but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I'm inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures to me and also made me the victim of not a few veteran bores. The abnormal mind is quick to detect and attach itself to this quality when it appears in a normal person, and so it came about that in college I was unjustly accused of being a politician, because I was privy to the secret griefs of wild, unknown men. Most of the confidences were unsought-frequently I have feigned sleep, preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realized by some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation was quivering on the horizon; for the intimate revelations of young men, or at least the terms in which they express them, are usually plagiaristic and marred by obvious suppressions.

Please, please we are pressed for time and as you can see we have a long way to go.

FAQ would be the one that he should read.

We should probably have a "Required Reading For New Members" sticky thread that includes links to Misopogon's posts, Brian's fair breakdown of the Jihad stuff, Mathlete and MCalibur posts, Steve Sharik posts (especially the one where he describes the defensive naming conventions because Brian uses it in the UFRs), etc.

It would also be awesome to include the CRex legacy.

To know what not to do, just look up the_big_house_500th or whatever his name was. That should keep you from getting negged. Spoiler: Don't post rewrites of Miley Cyrus songs that you created yourself.

regarding recruiting rankings.   That while they are no guarantee of anything and are not to be taken as gospel, the proven fact is that they matter, have a probability of accuracy, of and are not BS.   This will save him and us from making the "Mike Hart/Pat White and my grandfather were 3 stars and look what they did" comments.

1. Magnus is always right

2. Tom VH and The Other Brian are the best with recruiting information. Tim is also good but he works for the man!  (man = Brian)

3. Don't copy and paste subscription content from any recruiting sites.  Just give us the highlights in your own words.

4. Don't ever repost anything ever!

5. Live blogging causes Michigan (insert sport here) to lose

6. Brian likes Cats and Math.  If you can combine the 2 you will get on the front page.

7. Make sure your spelling is correct.

8.  Don't ever say anything negative about Michigan unless it's just seconds after a football loss.

9.  You have to buy at least one t-shirt from the mgoblog store.

10. If you’re a secret OSU/MSU/ND fan pretending to be a Michigan fan you will be sent to the Liberation Army for brain washing.

TomVH is the man.  He provides us with the manna we crave.  It is not necessary to thank him every time he provides us with info, especially since he drops it like its hot almost daily.

Give him a +1 rather than coming with "Thank you TomVH, you are great!".  Kinda like the "Great Post" comment above, it just doesn't add anything.  Just show him +1 props.

(TomVH, I do not mean to step on your toes, just trying to protect them.)

May people at this site are annoying about trying to control the content of it. It's a blog site that people go to talk about football stuff (it's not that important). If you are mad becuase you have spent 3 hours on this site already today and someone post a thread you dont like and want to tell everyone how much of a waste it is well get off and get a life. Go have a conversation with someone and tell them in person you dont like the content of their conversation. I mean come on dont you realize how rude that is. If you talked to people like that in person you would most definately run into someone willling to fight. But of course thats not what you people do, instead you sit at your computer playing mr. im better than everyone trying to control everyone. The Michigan Football fans on this site are like the video game players that spend their life playing WOW. I promise there is much more important things to care about than someone posting somehting at a Blog site that you would rather not read. Again, than don't read it. I've used this site now a year and I only have like 5 points and it's because I use this sight for the information and I still manage to read through it without posting something that tells others what to post and it's because I'm not here to Blog, but for those who are, stop pretending that you are not here ot waste your time talking about stuff that simply isnt that important.

The OP should tell his brother not to post stream of conscious paranoid ravings about an insidious cabal of MGoBlog users who try to control the content of the site, especially when peppered with nearly innumerable grammatical, spelling, and punctuation mistakes.

For example:

May people at this site

and someone post a thread

you dont like

how much of a waste it is well get off and get a life.

you dont like the content

I mean come on dont you realize

But of course thats not what

mr. im better than everyone

there is much more important things

Again, than don't read it.

I use this sight for the information

you are not here ot waste your time

talking about stuff that simply isnt that important.

So I choose to see Dr. BSD's comment as an ingenius teaching device, i.e. it is the purest distillation possible of how not to post.  Its absence of paragraphs, apostrophes or any logical structure, combined with bizzare capitalization and atrocious spelling leave the reader with the impression of fifth grader; the obsession with points makes us think the fifth grader is friendless.  Finely crafted and oh so helpful.

Bravo, BSD, bravo.

about two sentences into that little rant.

You should recommend that posters brush up on their grammar before they start posting replies.  This is a Michigan blog so unfortunately they will be held to higher standards.

Also, be sure to share the story of Tacopants with any new posters.  That should give them a pretty good idea of what they are walking into here.
