Via his Twitter GA Athlete Michael Barrett to make college decision tonight at 8:30

Think he's a better fit for Johnson's offense than he is for Frost's. I think he's a great RB prospect who could give us a credible passer in a wildcat look as well, but if he must be a QB then we just aren't his best option. Good luck to the kid wherever he chooses.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:31 AM ^
A wildcat offense at Michigan would be the same play over and over again. It still stresses me out when I think about Peppers and the creative stuff we could have done getting him the ball.
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:35 AM ^
Yep. The Wildcat the Dolphins ran with Ronnie Brown was more creative, because at least they had a series of plays to pick from, rather than counting on dumb luck that the opposing team might be full of idiots.

Pep wasn't here when Peppers was...

Though both offenses were equally terrible
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
Sad thing is, Peppers could throw well enough I thought 15 to 20 yards down the field. I could never see how many options he would have from the view on my couch when he ran outside however. I would've gave him two options every time and let him wing it a couple times in those big games. Too conservative Drevno. Wish they could've ran some of that stuff like they did with Denard also when he would take the shotgun snap and then run a few steps ahead and then drill a wide-out streaking over the middle while the defenders stepped up on the run.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:47 PM ^
It was a run.
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:18 PM ^
That does, indeed, make sense.

all year we waited...waited...waited...for that trick play to come out of the bag. Then it turns out there was no trick play. I can still barely believe a mind like Harbaugh (and his staff) thought that the PepCat package was good
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
...that there was a bigger, more systemic, problem with the offense.
It was so basic and uncreative, I couldn't believe it all last season (particularly the 2nd half). Then, we have this year, where the whole offense (with exceptions, like the OSU game) is disjointed and blah.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:23 PM ^
Peppers would have been waaaay more impactful if they simply would have handed off to him in a traditional RB role.

January 23rd, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
Even having him pull up to throw (even it it's an intentional overthrow or something) keeps the safeties back for a bit. It was just as creative as when Denard came into games after he got injured. You might as well hold up a sign that says HEY. THIS IS A RUN PLAY.
January 23rd, 2018 at 1:27 PM ^
but there was one play (I think from around the 10 yard line) where it seemed clear that Peppers's first option was to pass, but it wasnt there so he kind of just rolled out of bounds for a yard gain.
January 23rd, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
There was one rollout against Rutgers that looked like a pass-first play, but then he was like, "LOL, Rutgers. TD, me!"
January 23rd, 2018 at 3:27 PM ^
Maybe the surprise trick play was the fact there was no trick play? Might have been the TE dive play too, DOH
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:48 AM ^
Well the hope with Barrett would be that his throwing ability would open up more plays in the wildcat. Peppers wasn't a credible threat to throw. The wildcat only works when there's a threat of the QB doing something other than running (handing off a jet sweep, running an option, throwing). The reason we haven't run the wildcat successfully is because we aren't adding that secondary element (we had a couple read options for Peppers but I don't actually remember him giving the ball, whether that was the correct read or not).

I know fans like to dream and come up with creative uses for players, but can you come up with one team that consistently uses a change up wildcat package where the player throws the ball?
Over the last 10 or so years it has become a thing I cant really think of any.
Most teams do the same thing. Have a RB take the hand off with a fly sweep action as window dressing and the rb runs it. Barkley got a throw in this year but I believe he only had 1 throw out of the package.
I am one who actually likes the creativity, but in practice nobody does it so it's harder for me to blame the coaches for not doing it. I'm still waiting on the Zach Gentry package!!
If Barrett is coming the most likely scenario is he becomes a running back who possibly has 1 throw his entire career.

Looks like we are only keeping 2-3 5th year guys. I like Barrett as a prospect, but this is not good news for Offensive targets we have left or Doyle is not in the class this year. If we get Anderson that would be insane. Means Harbaugh will have fixed every hole with have with a grad transfer starter (QB, Safety, LT). Would be an awesome job out of Harbaugh all things given.
January 23rd, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
Doyle may go to prep school like Brad Hawkins did and enroll next year, which might work out well for all involved
January 23rd, 2018 at 11:33 AM ^
Agreed. Oddly, I think Barrett is a better fit for Georgia Tech, and the guy Georgia Tech currently has committed (James Graham) is a better fit for Nebraska. So it will be interesting to see how that shakes out.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
I cant believe you guys. You let a kid like this on the team. He is like a Michael Vick. You let him try and compete at quarterback and if it doesn't work out you put him at receiver or third down back. This kid is a stud. You don't pass speed like this up. His jukes are wicked. Thought you were brighter Mags!

The assumption Sam was basing the "no room for Barnett" statement on was that we are reserving the remaining open spots for positions that are more critical for us, like OT.

Ace crystal balled Barrett to Michigan earlier today.

Now Sam W. has an insider article on Barret and re-tweeted Barret. Possibly something has changed in his recruitment literally overnight. Although it could be clickbait.

Watch the ballz. I think Michigan is about to get a few for him before tonight.

Blue ballz are the best.
(Wait. What?)

I don't think Barrett is coming to Michigan, but he sure seems like a pretty dynamic guy.
January 23rd, 2018 at 12:24 PM ^
This seems like a sudden annoucement from Barrett, makes me think we know we arnt getting one of the OT and told him he is now a take so he is committing right away.
Wonder which OT we know is out

Anderson seems like the biggest longshot to me, Texas is recruiting him just as hard, and Austin is his hometown.

the good one.
