OT: Mgoblog Mechanics

Submitted by Ricky Spanish on
I recently bought a 2013 Dodge Avenger with 60k miles on it. When i test drove it, it drove great and i was very happy with the initial purchase. Since the purchase i have had some transmission problems. It first started when i shifted from reverse to drive, as it would jolt or slip into drive. Now it occasionally jerks when driving in first gear. It decllerates quickly while coasting and can feel a slight push while it coast. I took it to carmax where i bought it, as i have a 30 day warranty, they reassured me it was the CVT transmission and that it would take 1000 miles until it learns my driving. I then took it to a well regarded local garage and they also found no issues. He went as far as saying "I have a great car". It kicks into drive, it shifts erratically and no one seems to notice but me. It isn't throwing any codes, and no lights are on but i can feel something is wrong and i have no idea what to do. Any suggestions?

Awww, come on Ricky Spanish, it's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. [leans arm on hot engine part, then jumps away] Heyya! It's all ball bearings nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads, and I'm gonna need 'bout ten quarts of anti-freeze, preferably Prestone. No, no make that Quaker State.

I think you'll find most mechanics on here are of the more on the engineering side, like aeronautical... Post on a sparty board for this sort of mundaneness.

p.s., It pretty much sounds like there isn't an issue given the TWO sources you provided. So why post on a michigan sports blog???

that I have never had a post deleted by a mod. You on the other hand had several removed the other day due to callousness which you are either in denial about or are attempting to minimize.

I for one will not tolerate your ignorance, intolerance, and general defect of empathy. You are a bully and I am a bully of bullies. And, as a social advocate, I will continue to intervene when necessary.

Sometimes I like to have a little fun on this blog and if that costs me some point who cares. It's just a blog, It does not define me. However, seeing your responses and, well, lack of any insight, or responsibility for your perceptions that were removed by moderators for good reason. I'm not surprised you are attempting to turn it around on me, that is nothing unexpected from a person like you. I don't like you. I don't like the character you are portraying, and god do I hope it IS a character you are playing, not truly the person you are. Time will tell and myself the michigan community and moderators will let you know, again.

This is not a place you can act any way you please and spout ignorance or biggoty which, you have proven. You never appoligized, took ownership, or otherwise exhibited maturity. I would provide a quote, but again, they were deleted for good reason. I still remember, and I will make sure you do as well.

Edit: I have been a member on this board for almost as long as anyone, since practically it's inception. You, on the other hand, have waltz's in and acted like an entitled privileged ass. I feel bad for you for wanting 'likes' so much, they are telling of your self esteem. I pity this and wish you better for the future. I get everyone want their place, but maybe this isn't the place for you, at least at times. Just know that here within the michigan community you are held to a higher standard, and you will reap what you sow, as I did in my stupid comment. And, as you have already found out, though so easily forgoten. I hope those who are unaware of this will take my words into consideration before deciding their opinion and perceptions of you, or me for that matter.

Sorry for the rant, but sometimes it necessary, and protecting and advocating for others as well as defending myself exemplify this.

The implication that auto mechanics is somehow below "smart" people is ridiculous. I happen to be getting a PhD in aerospace engineering and you sure as hell better believe that I defer to my automechanic when it comes to taking care of my car.

He's a very intelligent guy, and has developed the relevant expertise. For some reason, I doubt that anyone would trust you to fix their car. Is that because you are "too smart"?

p.s. When/if I ever graduate, I hope that I will have enough time to learn to do at least some simple work on our cars. Seems like a fun hobby and a way to save a lot of money. It also seems like an intellectually challenging project to take on. It doesn't seem like easy work for stupid people.

would agree i believe, as they were part of both worlds.

As an Engineer, I understand some stuff, and understand cars a certain amount, but I would never trust me to fix my car. I was bested by my wife's new beetle when I couldn't change the lightbulb after a couple hours, some your tube instruction and a lot of swearing.

In regards to a CVT transmission, I have never driven one, but know that the feel of them is a lot different than your standard transmission.  You don't get the shifts you expect to feel.  Your mechanics may be right that you just need to get the feel of the car.  Maybe go test drive a new car with a CVT (I believe nissans all use them).  If they feel similar, then it's the different transmission feel.

Go back to Carmax and take another Dodge Avenger for an extended test drive. See if the transmission acts the same. That should tell you if your Avenger transmission is performing as it was designed to.

^^^ This is good advise.

Since you have a 30-day warranty I assume you can return it & get your money back.  If that's the case & you fear being stuck with a car that will annoy & piss you off I would consider returning it.

Did you buy an extended warranty?  My last car purchase was a Mercury Mariner Hybrid with 60k on it.  I spent the extra couple grand for the warranty & didn't quite break even on it with the repairs it needed, but was still very happy with the peace of mind that came with it.  There are so many things that can break that cost near the price of the warranty it makes it worth it (I had an ABS sensor crack in half that was causing the car to act sluggish... weird.  The part alone ended up costing $850.  No problem with the warranty.)

ask them for an extended warranty on the drivetrain since you won't know if anything is wrong with it until it 'learns you". At the very least I would get it in writing that you reported a potential problem within 30 days and if a real problem is found CarMax will either pay the full cost to repair or replace the transmission.

Personally, seems an odd explanation to me, and I just changed a transmission out on my son's Jeep. (So far had a good experience with a remanufactured transmission from Moveras if anyone is interested.)

Being very well-versed on what the contract says since I'm sure there will be some pressure that comes in the situation. They may try to make you feel awkward and to just 'tough it out' to get past the warranty and that the process would be long and painful, or that it's your fault and not theirs.

Don't hang on to something that will annoy you endlessly for the rest of its useful life.

I'm no mechanic, but most cars have websites and forums specific to the vehicle (or make of engine and transmission) where people with mechanical issues raise questions like yours. I doubt your the first one with that has had the issue you're experiencing.

I have a 2015 Chrysler 200 and it does the same thing. Google if they used the same 9 speed transmission in the avenger and if so, just return the car and pick anything other than a Chrysler because it will just piss you off forever. It is honestly embarrassing when it happens and you have people in your car.

They used the same line on me (the car needs to learn how you drive). 3 years later it still does the “lurch” forward. I tried to start the lemon process but they could never find anything wrong. Return the car while you can.

He's partly right. Don't ever buy a FWD Chrysler. Of course, no one should ever buy FWD because it's stupid fucking design.

I've had my Challenger for 7 years, and the only issues that have come up were minor and generally a result of me doing something to the car.  I don't know of anyone who has had a mechanical problem with theirs.

My dad has had a string of Dodge trucks for over 20 years. His current one has 250K miles on it, over 200K of those are pulling an 18,000 lb trailer. Only needs general maintenace, still runs amazingly well and is comfortable enough for he and mom to drive back and forth across the country.

That doesn't leave you with a lot of options. I will never buy another GM again. Every GM we have owned recently has had an issue. The same thing happened to co-workers who bought GM. It isn't a coincidence. I'm driving a 2012 GMC Acadia Denali with 150K with a power steering leak, a melted pass side day running lamp housing and heat that only blows out of the defrost vent. That's what I know of. This was my wife's car and she works from home. This thing has been babied since we bought it. The mileage would be lower but she works in West Michigan 1 day a week. Almost forgot, they said the struts are leaking.

And as someone already said, buy something else. Of all the OEMs, Dodge and its sibling brands constantly rank in the dead bottom in all sorts of quality surveys.
