Michigan wallops Minnesota on the road, highlighted by a 4-2 OT upset by Mattin over returning NCAA finalist Ethan Lizak. Unfortunately Massa dropped a bad decision to Wanzek in which he looked both injured and mentally broken.

His knee must have really gotten toasted against Wick because he basically gave up the rest of that match. He looked decent against Vinny but all his shots were straight on and easily blocked. Vinny countered twice and then did the inside trip to seal the match. This one, first period he looked great then again looked completely uninterested and gave up. Those Gramby roles today? Come on.

I will say this, I think right now he thinks he’s better than he is. If he’d put in the work to change levels, get his opponents moving side to side, then attack, he’s a national champ. But if he continues shooting straight on, going on his knees and grabbing single legs that sometimes work, he’ll be an AA but won’t get on the top of the podium.

And his conditioning is terrible. Not sure if he’s cutting weight, doesn’t look like he is, but he has no energy. The knee definitely effects that. So maybe he’s back a bit to early? I don’t know. I sure hope he figures it out. I love the kid. He can be a National Champ. Hope he gets it done.

It looks like maybe his injury is keeping him off the mat in practice and as we all know nothing else truly gets you in shape for wrestling like wrestling does. He did not gas like this last year. In fact, he got stronger as the match went on.

I agree on the straight ahead attacking. I'm sure the knee limits his mobility with some of the things he can do but he should be able to still use some misdirection and hand fighting to set up some things. Everything about the way he's wrestling now though makes me wonder if it's an ACL. It's too late for a med redshirt I believe so maybe he's just trying to tough it out since the year would be gone anyway.
