Most DBs in this recruiting class will probably redshirt.

An immediate need is to cover slot receivers better, and this guy can help.  Our current safeties cannot cover slots consistently.

Have to think maybe a position flip or two right? Problem is the most common flip for a DB is WR and we are rather deep, as well as young, in that area as well. Maybe one of the new DBs bulk up hardcore and become hybrid LBs? Idk I’m grasping at straws here, our top two corners and safeties return next year...even if Watson gets a handshake you’d think withour numbers crunch and roster adding 3 FR would suffice.

Classically...yes, you are correct. Typically this dynamic works in the other direction, to secure the kid.

However, given how little Michigan needed Wayne Lyons (and this post doesn't even need to emphasize how little Wayne played; it needs only emphasize how stacked that position group was before he arrived), one would be justified to argue that Michigan welcomed Wayne Lyons primarily to secure his mother - Gwen Bush - for a much more important position.

We still have at least 2 spots available according to the best estimates that I have read.  I am sure they are hoping that will be Patterson + either NPF or Calvin Anderson.

We took this guy because Don Brown had some concerns about his safety depth (you can't count on freshmen stepping up) and the coverage skills of the existing players.

DT was a luxury in this class in all honesty, then in the next class you already have chris hinton committed. In this class it would have been nice to add a guy like rick sandidge or mike thompson but they didnt get them, and compound that with the fact that tyler friday went to the arch enemy after recruiting him for approx. 3 years it just seems worse. guard seems to be set with the last couple classes and the position switches , that not taking one in this class would not be the worst problem that the class faces.

Yeah. At this point it's a 1-year commitment and if they feel like they need depth at DB/S, it's not the worst thing in the world to take a starter-ish guy from 14-ranked passing defense.

Essentially you only lose 1/5th of a scholarship player by grabbing a grad transfer for one year. You also have the benefit of seeing their performance for 4 years (so hopefully you know what you are getting), and, if you are offering hopefully they are trained up and mostly plug and play.

Also grad transfers are often really trying to get into the NFL so extra motivated for that last year.
