TTB: Update on former M football players/commits
I probably missed a guy or two, but I did a pretty complete rundown of how every former Michigan player and commit did in 2017 and where they are now. I also threw in some former coaches, at least from the Rodriguez, Hoke, and Harbaugh regimes.

Thanks Magnus always a joy to read original M content

I'm glad it's appreciated.

It is--very much so.

Thanks for your contribution. Fun and informative.
Any word on Carter Dunaway? I think he went to Princeton. He must love the helmet.
January 17th, 2018 at 11:56 AM ^
I knew I would miss someone in the roundup!
He's actually not on Princeton's roster. I don't know what he's up to these days.

Wish Kyle Bosch would have stuck around.
January 16th, 2018 at 4:31 PM ^
Yeah, I think he would have helped the offensive line to an extent, and he may have allowed Bredeson to play tackle. But he had some issues, and I can't blame Harbaugh for letting him loose.
January 16th, 2018 at 4:38 PM ^
Let's say Devery Hamilton stuck with Michigan. Does that mean Cole stays at C?
January 16th, 2018 at 7:48 PM ^
I don't think so. Right tackle was the weakest spot. I think you would have seen Cole-Bredeson-Kugler-Onwenu-Hamilton, with Ulizio/Bushell-Beatty as the odd men out.
January 16th, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
Wouldn't Bosch have been out of eligibility after 2016?
January 16th, 2018 at 6:44 PM ^
It depends on what would have happened. If it were a Darryl Stonum-type of situation, then he could have sat out 2015, redshirted, and then come back for 2016 and 2017.
January 16th, 2018 at 5:19 PM ^
What were the issues? I’ve always wondered.
January 16th, 2018 at 6:47 PM ^
I believe speculation before has been deleted, so I guess you'll have to ask...not on MGoBlog. And not on TTB. Sorry.

You forgot Najee Harris.

Has he done anything lately?
January 16th, 2018 at 6:48 PM ^
He's stocking shelves somewhere, probably, like a new-age Kurt Warner.
January 16th, 2018 at 4:36 PM ^
Never did I think A.J. Dillon would turn out to be a stud freshman, like he did this year!
January 16th, 2018 at 4:37 PM ^
What happened with Leonard Taylor OSU and Michigan were all over him early now no news about him
January 16th, 2018 at 4:40 PM ^
Looks like it is down to UL and UK. He used to be listed as a DE, but now he is strictly listed as a TE. I'm guessing he just never developed into an elite pass rusher than most thought he would become given his frame.
January 16th, 2018 at 6:49 PM ^
I don't think many people thought he would be an elite pass rusher. He was mostly thought of as a SDE/3-tech type, or maybe a blocking TE.
January 16th, 2018 at 4:43 PM ^
It's always interesting to look at these and see who panned out and who didn't. There's some guys out there who I thought would be stars and future NFL guys, but didn't do anything. And some where it wasn't a big deal they left or decommitted and they are tearing it up. Just shows how you never know.

That the best measurement of a football player isn't their height, weight, or 40 time. It's the ability to read, react, and execute to football plays, which is why the Combine is not a good predictor of NFL success and why often recruits get over or under valued based off things that are not measured during football games.

Great piece.
Letting a few of those OL go probably didn’t help this year.
January 16th, 2018 at 7:49 PM ^
Thanks.
January 16th, 2018 at 4:57 PM ^
Didn't we have a RB who played at UM who also coached here who's now coaching at some other school? I forget his name, but his son, Tyrone Wheatley JR. is on the team.
January 16th, 2018 at 5:10 PM ^
He did say he might have forgot one or two. Otherwise, I think it is a pretty cool list and interesting to read.
January 16th, 2018 at 6:08 PM ^
Tough crowd...
January 16th, 2018 at 5:33 PM ^
But I think he is coaching at the high school level.
January 16th, 2018 at 11:41 PM ^
Still haven’t recovered from the Homecoming game where Ricky Powers fumbled while
running out the clock and we lose to Illinois. That was a kick in the dick.
January 16th, 2018 at 7:32 PM ^
Yeah, these are all college guys.

Might want to add Roy Roundtree to the former players coaching category. I think he's the WR coach at Indiana St. Check his Twitter
January 16th, 2018 at 11:47 PM ^
Don’t forget Jumbo Elliott. I saw him eating a footlong hot dog on the sideline of HS girls soccer game last fall.
January 16th, 2018 at 5:09 PM ^
Personally, I though Wyatt Shallman would end up being a diamond in the rough FB or LB/DE for Harbaugh even though Hoke promised him a shot at TB.
January 16th, 2018 at 7:35 PM ^
I'll say this:
I've seen several guys enter college and say, "I'll play wherever they want me," and those seem to be the more successful guys. The guys who come into college saying, "I want to be a ________ and only a _________" seem to struggle more.
One notable exception is Mark Andrews, a guy who insisted on being a WR in college, and now he's a highly productive TE at Oklahoma.
January 16th, 2018 at 5:15 PM ^
Appreciate the hustle, Magnus.
January 16th, 2018 at 5:19 PM ^
That’s 1 recruit I thought could have helped Michigan greatly... His speed to get over the top would have opened up the other receivers underneath... He’s not doing much at FSU and he can’t catch the ball well from what I heard still wanted him
January 16th, 2018 at 6:12 PM ^
If Matt Millen ever returns to an NFL front office, Campbell might yet get drafted.
January 16th, 2018 at 7:38 PM ^
Yeah, he's had trouble with his hands, but he's also missed almost two full seasons due to injury over three years. I'm not sure he's going to reach his potential due to injury, and that's unfortunate for him.
January 16th, 2018 at 6:32 PM ^
One of the more high profile commitment divorces. Would he come in handy now?
January 16th, 2018 at 7:42 PM ^
I can't say "no" because Michigan's tackle situation is pretty crappy, but he only even played in three games at Oklahoma this year. With the way they put points on the board, one would think he could get some run as a backup in garbage time, or on field goal protection units. I guess Oklahoma didn't truly blow out many people this year because their defense was questionable, but I'm not sure how much they think of him in Norman.
We'll see in the near future. Oklahoma is pursuing grad transfer Calvin Anderson (like Michigan is), so they're also looking for help on the OL. It will be interesting to see how much Swenson factors in next year.

Don't mean to thread-jack, but I didn't think this deserved it's own thread, as it is just a little recruiting scuttlebutt. Talked to one of my UGA booster buddies today about Reese and he said that UGA is not pushing for him very hard anymore and that he's almost certain he will stay with Michigan. This meshes with sentiment from Michigan's end and makes sense with CP reupping and visiting Reese, Reese setting an OV, and Michigan hiring a stellar recruiter as another LB coach. My UGA friend also said something else about Reese that I won't repeat because I've only heard it from a single source and it could just be sour grapes about Michigan winning out for a great LB prospect in their backyard.
January 16th, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
Thanks for the update on Reese. God news in recruiting is always welcome. Glad I saw your comment in this thread.

Any news/rumors about where Speight is headed?
January 16th, 2018 at 7:44 PM ^
His former QB coach, Steve Clarkson, talked about it not long ago (LINK). There's no word yet on where Speight will end up, and Clarkson said he might wait untli closer to NSD to see how things are shaking out with various QB recruits. I keep hearing rumors of Virginia, but we'll see.
January 16th, 2018 at 7:47 PM ^
There were also rumors of him following Jedd Fisch to Mizzou if Fisch got the job there, but he didn't. Fisch is interviewing to be the QB coach with the Atlanta Falcons, so the Speight/Fisch combo may not happen again unless Speight makes it to the NFL.

Am I mistaken or was Ross Douglass recruited to Michigan as a CB?
January 16th, 2018 at 7:45 PM ^
Yeah, he was recruited to Michigan as a slot corner. He played corner and then played some running back (which he also played in high school) at Michigan before transferring. He was basically a slot corner at Rutgers, but they called him a linebacker on their official roster.
