McGuffie Makes US Bobsled Team
Bascue’s push crew will be Evan Weinstock (Las Vegas, Nev.), Steve Langton (Melrose, Mass.) and Sam McGuffie (Cypress, Texas). McGuffie has also been selected as Bascue’s brakeman in two-man.

Awesome. Congrats Sam! Go Blue and Go Rice,
January 15th, 2018 at 9:14 AM ^
Be really cool to see him push and then backflip into his seat. Good for Sam - it will be fun to watch him.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:29 AM ^
move to get a low time.
January 15th, 2018 at 10:38 AM ^
Yeah front flip - that's what I meant.
January 15th, 2018 at 10:18 AM ^
It does blow one's mind how you can be that athletic and not be able to make it in the NFL. Goes to show you how much bigger, stronger, faster, etc those guys are if SM can't break in.
January 15th, 2018 at 10:35 AM ^
Well, being good at the football part has a lot to do with it.
January 15th, 2018 at 10:45 AM ^
And the whole multiple concussions thing.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:16 AM ^
Looks like I've got a newfound interest in the bobs this Olympics!
Good luck, Sam!

Hard to see them in the aerodynamic suits they wear. Plus, we're talking about dudes.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:17 AM ^
That's awesome. Go blue and go Rice.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:18 AM ^
That's awesome. Are these teams expected to compete for medals? I don't follow international bobsledding.
January 15th, 2018 at 11:19 AM ^
C'mon man! you gotta be the only one here who's not into that!

This is awesome, I'll actually watch some of the Olympics this time, for Sam, and the new hockey team format.

If they win gold, is he still a bust?
Seriously though I hope he does win gold. I fondly remember the hope and excitement around the program the year he committed and RR had that fresh new car smell. My first year of grad school.
Good times.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:21 AM ^
I also remember the new car smell. Now there is s much negativity around the program we have more of that old vagrant with a bottle of vodka smell.
January 15th, 2018 at 9:46 AM ^
Agreed. And to think, not long ago a 10-2, 10-2 and 8-4 three year run would have been ... Pretty good!

Is the US men’s bobsled projected to compete for gold next month? Historically we haven’t always been strong in this event.
January 15th, 2018 at 10:32 AM ^
Looking at the rankings and results from the world cup events this year, Bascue's sled is ranked 5th in the 4-man bobsled and 11th in the 2-man bobsled. He is the highest-ranked USA driver in both events, so I guess whomever is picking the team thinks McGuffie is the top...uh...pusher (is that the term?)
Bascue and McGuffie did finish first in the 2-man world cup event in Lake Placid back in November, and a couple of other medals from other events, so I guess a medal wouldn't be completely out of the question.
January 15th, 2018 at 12:12 PM ^
Means they probably are in the running for a medal if everything goes right, but gold would be a stretch.
January 15th, 2018 at 10:57 AM ^
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor???
January 15th, 2018 at 9:25 AM ^
Nuff some people you know they can't believe
McGuffie made the bobsled team

Congratulations from one Sam to another!
Every since I was a kid watching the Olympics, I always thought that one of the coolest things would be to march in the opening ceremonies: flags waving, crowd cheering, surrounded by the rest of the US team, and the teams from around the world.
The coolest, of course, would be to stand on the podium with a gold medal around your neck as they played the National Anthem for you. (Knowing me, I'd probably lose it.)
Go get 'em, Sam - and Go Blue!

Feel the rhythm
Feel the rhyme
Get on up
It’s bobsled time!

That's crazy that the tryouts are like less than a month before the actual Olympics

As noted in the thread yesterday, McGuffie will become the first former Michigan football player to compete in an Olympics in 118 years.
John McLean played football at Michigan in the late 1800s and then won a silver medal in the hurdles in the 1900 Paris Olympics.

Good for him. A great young man and a terrific athlete.

We will be cheering you on!!!

Way to demonstrate what a great athlete you are.

Bobsledder from Texas. That can't be super common.

He trained with the Jamaicans

Runs fast and wears a helmet, he's got experience.
Congrats Sam!
January 15th, 2018 at 1:30 PM ^
What's the over/under for him leaping over a bunch of lined up bobsleds? I'd say at least 8.

Cool Runnings! Good Luck Sam! I Remember wearing my #2 McGuffie Jersey at the Mint Condition, New Edition, Ready For the World Show at Chicago State Univeristy. Bonded with my Flint Boyz Ready for the World, they were very grateful, and took this "cracker" to Cracker Barrel in Gary Indiana on the way home.

Had Sam redshirted his frosh year he could have been awesome. He was just not ready at 18 years old to take on a B1G safety coming full speed. Needed one year in the S&C program. That is on RichRod.

guarantee there will be some football hurdling highlights coming during the olympics.
