Off-Topic: False Alarm about Incoming Missile in Hawaii
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/13/us/hawaii-missile.html
“Someone clicked the wrong thing on the computer,” was supposedly the cause of the false-alarm. It’s odd, because you would think it isn’t that easy to accidentally trigger a state-wide ballistic missile alert. I couldn’t imagine how terrifying it was for the people in Hawaii.

A missile landed on the Breslin Center this afternoon.

Very frightening for the residents there.....
January 13th, 2018 at 8:53 PM ^
And probably just as frightening for the people visiting!

Im on Kauai with my wife. Woke up to the notice on my phone-called my kids to tell them i loved them and maybe goodbye.
38 minutes of pure terror.
January 13th, 2018 at 9:08 PM ^
Damn man, sorry you had to experience that.
January 13th, 2018 at 9:10 PM ^
You couldn’t send us a message telling us you loved us? All those upvotes I’ve been giving you over the years and this is what we get?
On a serious note, I can’t imagine what that was like.
January 13th, 2018 at 9:34 PM ^
I’m sorry you had to live through that and glad you weren’t, you know, hit by a missile.
January 14th, 2018 at 11:11 AM ^
I’m glad he lived through it. ;)
But seriously, scary shit. Wow.

A nice Hawaiian vacation, and that will be the memory you carry with you for the rest of your life. Ugh.
Enjoy the rest of the trip.

"Aside from that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"
January 13th, 2018 at 10:47 PM ^
Was at a restaurant watching the game. All I did was move from a table outside to a table inside. Can't deny that I was a little panicked though.

Hey Craig Ross - what'd ya think?
January 13th, 2018 at 9:40 PM ^
I was playing tennis over at the Royal Kona (Kailua-Kona, Big Island) with former Ann Arborite and former lawyer-turned novelist Jon Rowe.
Jon's wife sent an emissary (my wife) saying we should stop and go home. That an ICBM was on the way.
Jon said "forget it, we are finishing our match. No one is bombing the Big Island (Hawaii). What's the point? A'int nothing here."
So we finished. I have to admit it was a bit creepy. Even in the early AM Ali'i drive is active. Not this AM for about 30 minutes. Eerily quiet. No people. Almost no traffic. A stray old bi-plane hovered over the ocean. It seemed weirdly out of place and added to a sense of unreality.
Somehow, Jon and I both concentraated and played better than usual.
Then I went back to the condo and learned that all was good. I watched the DVR of UM/MSU, high fived my bro Tom Izzo on his genuis, went over to KTA and bought some Ahi for dinner and then watched the game again, this time savoring a Maui Porter.
Wonderful day.

Appreciate everything about you Craig. we've never met and probably never will, but as far as I'm concerned you are the epitome of a Michigan man

I hope I just qualify as about average among those who follow Brian's site.
Hey, if you are in AA in the spring or fall, give me a call.

Mahalo Craig. Enjoy your winter over there. Hawai'i is easily my happiest place on earth.

this'll be my/our 15th visit...and if i had to pick a spot for a final demise, Hualalai or Wailea (Maui) would be it.

assuming this is really you - thanks! you are great on the radio round table.
keep it up!

It’s impossible to trigger the system by accident. I guess they would rather look like idiots with this lie than tell the truth, so it must have been bad.
January 13th, 2018 at 9:11 PM ^
You should at least stay at a Holiday Inn Express before offering these bits of expert advice.
January 13th, 2018 at 9:37 PM ^
It takes more than one person to activate the system. It's not just a button that someone can sit on by mistake.
January 13th, 2018 at 10:22 PM ^
The governor said the system is being changed so that it WILL take more than one person to send out an alert. Previously, no.
January 13th, 2018 at 11:38 PM ^
They’re the government. So they will “fix” it but will actually screw it up even more.
January 14th, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
no politics.
esp. needless blanket comments about "government".
January 13th, 2018 at 8:37 PM ^
Good news: the system in place to warn of an incoming ballistic missile works.
Bad news: there is a need for a system warning of an incoming ballistic missile.
Sounds terrifying. I'd hate to have to keep a child calm during such a time.
January 13th, 2018 at 8:44 PM ^
That would be scary to receive a message like that. Almost as scary as one saying “Im late.”
January 13th, 2018 at 8:45 PM ^
Best case is the keep children unaware of the event. Anyone who doesn’t need to know what’s going on shouldn’t know. That’s how you keep them calm. That’s how it worked for the British, that’s how it’ll work for our Hawaiians.

on the outskirts of Tinker AFB while B-52's were in the air with nuclear weapons 24/7. That was immediately after the Cuban Missile Crisis. We mostly laughed at the teachers who insisted on duck and cover drills. They also tested sonic booms on the population. We didn't lose too many windows. Kids are resilient, keep them off the tweeter.
January 13th, 2018 at 8:57 PM ^
Worse news: Idiots run said ballistic missile warning system.
