Michigan receiving votes in MBB AP Poll

Submitted by Bambi on

Michigan has received the 6th most votes of the others receiving votes (aka ranked 31st) with 5 votes. Ohio State has the 4th most among that group with 29. The only ranked B1G teams are MSU and Purdue, at 4th and tied at 5th with Wichita State respectively. That means this week Michigan is hosting #5 and going to #4.

We should be brought up at least. JB has the guys playing great. Next two will tell us if we deserve to be in for sure though.

Marvin, no deal here, saying i am first in every thread is quite the yarn, but yes it appears i am first sometimes. Just like to talk with people on here that is all. I can tell alot of people hate me on here, so i will try to back off from posting first a little more. If there is another reason i am disliked i wish people would tell me, so i can improve that area as well. Seriously, thanks for asking the ?, usually it's just a rude accusation for no reason. I am always open to answering any question openly. Also, voltron, funny post. Grendel, thanks for continuing to badger me, keeps me on my toes.

week for the basketball team.  I am, however, getting a little bit tired of the noon tips in East Lansing.  This is like the 4th straight year that we have played at Michigan State in this slot and I think it is time for some variety.  Even like the State game yesterday in a late afternoon time slot would be cool for a change of pace.

It's just not a good drinking time, too early.  Not that I don't like drinking at noon, it's that it makes me sleepy too soon later

trying out this "not drinking at all thing" (I know, lol right) now so really no time is particularly that great of a time for me.  Actually, now that I think about it, noon might be the best time for a game while I have this little experiment going on.

I dont like having no drinks finished when the game starts, especially when JB's teams start slow at MSU. The game can essentially be over before the first beer is done.

have a say in those times I wonder?

If it's the hosts, it's a big advantage to do it earlier.  By making it a noon game, they're pretty much forcing us to make the trip the night before which puts us in hotels, etc.  If it's a later game, the team could sleep in it's own beds, keep it's usual Friday routine, and bus over on gameday.  Pretty sure this is what MSU football did last season and it's what Dantonio was talking about in terms of it being more like a home game since it's so close and they can keep much of their home game routine.

This could explain why MSU would do it to us every year.

15 min before start time.  You want to be there well before start, and you obviously need a buffer for travel issues.  It's possible they leave early in the morning, but even if they do, that distrupts their ability to have a morning walk-through which would be done on a home gameday (and could still be done at home per routine before a night game in EL).

Your comment was funny though, so I appreciated that.

not sure about the basketball team.  But still would rather stay in your usual hotel than one in EL.  Keeping as much of your usual routine the same is best.  And any chance to disrupt that routine is something these coaches would try to do.  If it's TV setting it, this is moot anyway.

Concur. At least for our nationally-televised premium matchups. I know for years CBS has liked us in the noon slot prior to their PGA Tour coverage (which generally begins in late January in San Diego). This Saturday's tilt is on Fox, serving as a lead-in for another college hoops game (Creighton-Xavier). I would assume we will get Gus Johnson on the broadcast team. Much prefer his basketball coverage over football.

Still astonished that they didn't protect home-and-home rivalries in MBB -- no reason MSU and Michigan should ever only play one game a year. Make it literally any other school.

6 kenpom top 100 teams, including a road win at a decent LSU.  They're highly talented.  They don't have a bad loss. They're 12-3 against a pretty tough overall schedule (29th per kenpom, they played a lot of those 100-200ish teams that you want to play).  They're 22nd in kenpom.  There aren't 25 teams with a better combo of talent and resume.  That's why they're still ranked.  It's fine.

How dare you respond to my post with reason and facts! This is the Internet! I still think they don't have the resume of a top 25 team so far (not that they can't or won't get there). KenPom top 100 is an arbitrary cut off. Michigan has beaten 6 KenPom top 100 teams, and no one on here is arguing they should be ranked top 25 so far.

but I just used it to say they've beaten some quality teams.

Yes, Michigan also has 6 kenpom top 100 wins and they're ranked 31st.

There's an arbritrary mental cliff people have about being ranked and not being ranked, but there isn't much difference between being ranked 20-something or whatever UK is ranked and being 31st in terms of team quality. It's a very small margin.

The reason UK has a better resume than we do, IMO, is pretty simple: they have the same number of losses but a far better SOS (again, their non top-100 games are largely against teams that at least had a chance to beat UK, ours mostly did not at they were horrible).

I would also argue they performed better against our two common opponents (UCLA and LSU) because we needed a home win in OT to go 1-1 whereas they went 1-1 with a neutral and road game.

Plus, I'm a numbers guy and if kenpom says they've performed better than Michigan, I don't see any reason to think they haven't (unless they've suffered an injury or something such that their current team isn't the same as the one that produced the results being pumped into kenpom's algorithm).

I think M will be a 6 seed by the time the tournament comes around.  The team is improving and should have a pretty decent record at the end of the year.  This is helped by a little bit of a down B1G, but whatever.

This is one of the most wide open college basketball seasons I can remember. I really don't buy ASU as one of the 10 best teams in the country. Same goes for Xavier. But they'll hover around there for a while.

We have 7 home and 7 road games left. I think we go 9-5 giving us a 23-8 record which depending how far we get in the BTT should put us at a 6 seed. That would be an amazing season.
