US Army Game Review: Aidan Hutchison
January 6th, 2018 at 9:56 PM ^
Should be in for a ratings bump
January 7th, 2018 at 12:31 PM ^
I think the all star games should allow for a better idea of what kind of recruiting cycle we've had so far. Obviously it's not as good as the last couple years, but increased exposure for a bunch of the lower rated recruits should give some better insight towards if we're finding diamonds in the rough, or settling for secondary options.
January 6th, 2018 at 9:58 PM ^
College ready and should be in the rotation come Notre Dame.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:02 PM ^
Unless he's better than Carlo Kemp there is no point.
There is a guy by the name of Rashan Gary that won't be coming off the field too much. You also have Irving-Bey and R. Johnson. Not to mention Jeter can give snaps at SDE.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:05 PM ^
I am not sure where the other backups you listed are at in terms of their development. However, Karlo Kemp did not look like an elite pass rusher last year. Given Hutchinson's senior film and this performance, I am confident he can compete to crack the two deep.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:08 PM ^
You're not supposed to be an elite pass rusher at that position. Gary is just a freak of nature.
You're more likely going to be Chris Wormley or Ryan Van Bergen-esqe. Kemp did a solid job, coaches are high on him.
The pass rush DE is the Charlton, Winovich (Paye/Vilian) spot.

true.

Here we go again. Are you one of our fans who predicted 11-1 or 10-2 this past season. Hutch could be good, but like Harbaugh the kid is no savior yet. He will need some time and he will certainly be behind Kemp on the depth chart.
January 7th, 2018 at 9:40 AM ^
I don’t really see anyone calling him a savior, just stating he will be in the DL rotation, which Mattison likes to rotate a lot to keep bodies fresh. I don’t think it’s too terribly optimistic to think a guy like Hutchinson can crack the rotation in year one.

Ironic
January 7th, 2018 at 3:02 PM ^
don't you think.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:06 PM ^
Give him his points back. Hamilton was ass my dude.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:53 PM ^
I thought Hamilton was great.
January 7th, 2018 at 5:50 AM ^
Or a jerkoff....
January 7th, 2018 at 1:03 AM ^
Nah, send him back to Bolivia for exposing my lack of football knowledge
January 7th, 2018 at 4:21 AM ^
Carlo Kemp was one of the least effective players on the field last year. Truly a disappointment, IMO.
That being said, Hutch will obviously need to add weight and strength before he makes an impact.
Also, I thought I read that Jeter was up to 295 and is more than likely going to be an inside guy.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:02 PM ^
Doubtful. Gary and Chase will play way too many snaps to get that deep.
SDE - Gary/Kemp
WDE - Winovich/Paye/Vilain
January 7th, 2018 at 8:43 AM ^
You gentlemen are forgetting Julius Welschof will be tearing it up in Berlin (Stuttgart?, Dresden?...) He's Gary and Clowney all in one.
January 6th, 2018 at 9:58 PM ^
Don brown must be happy
January 6th, 2018 at 9:59 PM ^
Hopefully he redshirts, gets bigger then competes with DIB for Kemp's backup in 19 and competes for the starting spot in 20.
That RS year could be huge...see Chase Winovich. I'm pretty sure we'll all trade no Chase his true freshman year for next year. Same with Mo Hurst.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:00 PM ^
Really?
He's at 260 pounds right now. I think he can contribute as a freshman.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:04 PM ^
That's what he's listed as, but he's still in the 240 lb range.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:25 PM ^
Yeah, I think the announcers even said he's under 240 right now.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:03 PM ^
I don't think he's 260 now. He should be by camp though. And yes, there's no point unless he's better than Kemp.
If he is...then by all means. Cut him loose. I personally think Kemp is an all-B1G SDE if not for the guy who starts over him.
January 6th, 2018 at 11:06 PM ^
Glad to see you back and here's hoping you get your points back.
January 7th, 2018 at 7:16 AM ^
Got something brown on your nose there Cali.
January 6th, 2018 at 11:07 PM ^
6-6 260 would still be leaning toward the leaner aide of an anchor. As mentioned above, his position isn't pass rush dependent. It's better to look at it as an anchor position and not SDE, because they are slightly different in that regard. His job will be to cut off his 3rd of the field completely, setting the edge every down and turning everything back inside. Contain the play to the other 9 guys on your team first (strong side corner wouldn't be included, hence 9 not 10), get to the QB second. Gary is phenomenal at this which is why you see all the TFLs and sacks coming to people who aren't him. He isn't lighting up the stat sheet, but he is a black hole to anything coming his way. Occasionally this season we saw him get a little too far up field and you can see how that affects the defense's success.
January 7th, 2018 at 12:05 AM ^
Would like to see him moved around sometimes, take advantage of his speed. They've done it before...but agree his role is to shut down that 1/3rd and he's doing it well. More to come. Hutch dominated this game like Gary did the UA 3 years ago.

Hey, welcome back
January 6th, 2018 at 10:05 PM ^
Welcome back. Always look forward to your input.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:12 PM ^
Just say a pic from the game. Standing next 2 Jaylen Mayfield 6’5” 245 and he made him look small. Kid is a monster.
January 7th, 2018 at 8:28 AM ^
Except when you looked at Mayfield next to the other OL, he looked MUCH bigger than 245. He wasnt much smaller than the other OL, if at all.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:06 PM ^
I also don't think he sees the field as a freshman. We've got a plethora of young DEs that will be seeing the field this year. Best to let him put on weight and spead the talent throughtout for future depth.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:13 PM ^
I think he will RS. Got Chase, Gary, Paye, Vilian, Kemp, etc hopefully Michigan can rotate guys in 18. Have the guys I mention plus Solomon, Dwumfour, Mone, Paea, Irving-Bey, Jones, Jeter, Johnson.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:59 PM ^
Isn't that the whole point of building depth through great recruiting classes? You have time to get these kids ready not just physically but mentally and also let them adjust to the college life and academic workload.
January 7th, 2018 at 10:34 AM ^
blogerati stop praying for a freshman savior every year.
January 6th, 2018 at 11:10 PM ^
you missed marshall - if youre naming potential 2018 DL rotation players. the staff seems to like his game and he earned a decent role this past year. marshall likely tops the list of potential 5th years, along with mone (and watson).
DT will be real interesting in 2018
January 6th, 2018 at 10:15 PM ^
Saw a pic from the game standing next to Jaylen Mayfield (6’5” 245) and he is all of 6’6” 260-270. The kid may see the field next year.
January 6th, 2018 at 11:26 PM ^
Mayfield sees action before Aidan ,,, he is a mauler with attitude...
January 6th, 2018 at 11:59 PM ^
We need that Lewan type, that edge. I love what I'm seeing and hearing about the top of this class. I am loving this class in general...because I'm NOT hearing about it by the so called experts and that's great! I want an under the radar class of scrappers and grinders. Guys who come to make a name not with an ID already. That's what Msu gets every Damn year. Time to flip it on them!
January 7th, 2018 at 7:36 AM ^
"McGrone stands 6', 6'3" with the afro"
January 7th, 2018 at 9:21 AM ^
They are saying he's still growing, so that makes sense.
January 6th, 2018 at 10:17 PM ^
Call a pro game. I feel like I'm watching 7 and 8th grade schemes. Ask Dantony. It was the worst insult.
January 7th, 2018 at 8:29 AM ^
By pro game do you mean put 9 guys on the field for a crucial third down?
January 6th, 2018 at 10:18 PM ^
I heard the commentators say that Hutchinson and another DL were absolutely unstoppable today. Kudos to the future Wolverine!
January 7th, 2018 at 1:04 AM ^
I think it was Togiai, an OSU commit.
January 7th, 2018 at 1:08 AM ^
No it was an uncommitted kid on the west squad.
